Has anyone here in the forum seen the movie "Educating Julie"? I was wanting to get a copy of it, but it doesn't seem to be available at the local Blockbuster or anywhere else. Is the internet the only place it is available?

Probably, as it is a somewhat obscure video. I'm not sure where you could buy it online but I know I have seen it for sale on Ebay from time to time.
I'd really like to watch it as well.

These were all David Ball productions. He also produced a series called Naked in the USA which included Naked Florida, Naked California, Naked Texas and some others. You might be able to get them from TNS. I haven't looked to see if they are available. A nusdist friend of ours gave me his "Naked in the USA" videos along with the Educating Julie tape. It is very good.

Actually that's cheaper than I was expecting.. most nudist videos seem to run in the $60 range.

I have a copy and I recommend it. It's intelligent and seems genuine. The scenes at the naturist resorts use real naturists, not people from central casting. I've had it for years so I don't know where to look now.
nakednudist, I have a copy on VHS I think I got it from TNS, but not sure. I don't think I paid anything like $34.95 for it. I am too much of a tightwade to pay that much for any video! I would be willing to loan it to you if you would like. I would need you to e-mail me your snail mail address. My e-mail address is jrh_ind2@yahoo.com. I promise that I would destroy your address once I get the video.
I just happen to think. I bgelieve there is a nudist library at one of the nudist resorts in Florida. Maybe someone on this forum would know where it is located. This library might loan it to you.

"Educating Julie" is listed in the Internaturally, Inc., supplement #904, p3. It lists for $59.95 + $4.25 S&H.

I wonder why they price those so high... I would never buy a video for $60.
Are most nudists made of money?
If they reduce the price, I'm sure they would sell a lot more.

Nudists aren't the only ones buying the vids (in fact nudists are probably the minority).. They're probably selling like hotcakes even at $60 a pop. Pervs will pay alot to see legal videos of nude kids.

Doug - Yes, I suppose so, but "Educating Julie" is actually just an overly long, ficticious, badly-acted video about a 20something British young woman who's doing a college school project on naturism.
She has a jealous boyfriend; she goes to naturist southern France alone, etc etc. It's all very harmless and, apart from the acting, not too bad...but it does not include kids, so it's not one of those "documentaries" from eastern Europe about nudism.

Sorry, I should have been more clear when I posted that. I meant naturist videos in general (particularly those documentaries you mention) - I wasn't really referring to "Educating Julie" tho I'm sure some nutcase out there gets a sexual thrill from watching it as well.

The movie isn't worth $60.
It's dated. It's got trappings in it from the early 80s. Ford Orions (common car in Britain around 20 years ago). Clunky TVs with manual channel controls. A VCR that is 8 inches tall, over two feet across. Even a typewriter.
It has some problems. I would never show it to a friend (or spouse or partner) who I might try to convince to try nudism on for size. There is one horrible scene in which Julie's boyfriend is taunted into disrobing by members of the Liverpool Sun Club. I think they were going for a laugh but it crashed. Vrey BAD message. If any nudists 'consulted' on this project, that scene should have been dumped.
There is at least one point in which Julie forgets the number one rule of nudist hygiene - she forgets to sit on her towel. This is in a juncture where she is lying to the club members, telling them she's been a nudist all her life. They would have found her out in that one scene.
Its acting is atrocious. A Google search leads one to believe that the "professional" actors in this video - Gail Ward and Miles Taylor, had their careers start and end with this project. The nudists in the presentation were actually better actors than the pros. The boyfriend, drank a lot in this film. If I were hooked up with Julie, and her overdone acting -- combine that with the availability of good English bitter, and I'd drink, too.
Don't worry -- the video does not exploit kids. They are probably present in around 30 seconds of the video. This is not an Eastern European "family naturist video".
The best actress in the film was the older teen/young adult lady who accompanies Julie and explains why she likes nudism. There are several "real nudists" who take part in the show.
It turns into a commercial for Cap d'Agde and Paradise Lakes.
I doubt that the ANRL (American Nudist Research Library) rents it out. Certainly they have it there and if you go to the Cove, they'll let you view it. If you belong to a nudist club they may have it in their private collection.
AANR gives a merchandise rebate to clubs based on their membership levels and so they may have used their credit to obtain the film. The AANR club I belong to did that, made it available for club member viewing, and then gave it away in the annual club drawing for prizes. By popular demand, the club officers now use the club credits for towels, t-shirts, and books.
My recommendation - if you can see it for free, then do so. But it ain't worth buying.
If you REALLY want to see what nudism is like - get one of the intro films from AANR or TNS. I will admit that "Educating Julie" does give an accurate depiction of nudism in Europe in the 1980s. British nudist parks were rather conservative and somewhat spartan, and probably still are today.
If you are having trouble convincing a reluctant female partner / spouse into taking part in nudism there are two other videos = "Real Women, Real Stories" and "Body Positive". They're better than "Educating Julie". In fact, I think the taunting scene negated a lot of the rest of the presentation.

usuallylurk, I mostly agree with everything you're saying. But I still think it's a fair attempt at a full-length feature film about nudism (as opposed to the hundreds of documentaries out there.) I'd like nothing more than to see it redone today, with bigger budget and better actors, and avoiding all the errors they made in the first one.
BTW, I paid about $20 for my copy...nearly a decade ago.

I don't think any of us suggested a particular format to nakednudists, but if I had to choose between the $60 DVD from Internaturally, or a $20-$30 VHS tape, I would take the tape hands down (even tho I prefer DVDs). A $30 DVD would be ideal. http://clothesfreeforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Btw, both DVDs and VCRs are products of the 20th century. http://clothesfreeforums.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I won mine in our club drawing, I lent it to someone, and didn't get it back, but I didn't care, either.
If someone's going to do a remake - it should probably be of "Elysia" - an early 1930s documentary. There is a "nudist double feature" - Elysia and The Unashamed - available from Something Weird Video - for around fifteen bucks + shipping. The former is a good candidate for a remake. The latter is interesting because of its story, theme, and racial attitudes of the time.
The lady who is one of the film's two central characters is non-Caucasian, apparently Native American and part of the story movement plays on that. That's quite interesting in itself - in 1930s America, would she have even been allowed beyond the front gate of a nudist park?
The difference is that "Educating Julie" was not produced as an exploitation flick. Other nudist films, even those that were produced at nudist parks, were considered to be of the exploitation genre. Then again, nearly ALL nudist magazines produced before the late 1960s could have been considered "exploitation" material.

Except in the movies, where the actors playing the two characters never appeared again.
It WOULD be an interesting interview - to find Gail Ward and Miles Taylor - to learn what they've done since "Educating Julie" and, what were THEIR impressions of nudism after they did the film? But given the fact that it was, in effect, a career-ending move for both of them, would they be willing to talk about it ???

What up Nakednudists, this is your friend of the Greek Athletic Meet (http://www.tallahasseenaturally.org/greek_athlet.html) this past March. If you really want to see this movie Educating Julie, before you purchase it from who ever. Going ask Paul LeValley, if you can still remember him from the Greek Athletic Meet. He has a copy, where you can see how this movie really is. Does one have to make reservations to camp/visit the lake up there near Tallahassee, or could I simply drive up there and setup camp anytime on a weekend?
Are pets allowed?

The lake is open saturdays and sundays year round. I have heard now that it is also open of fridays as well. You do not need reservations to attend, however, if no one is there, you cannot get in. There is usually somone there on the weekend though, so it shouldn't be a problem. Enjoy the horseflies!
