http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/confused.gif Hi, I'm new here and need some advice on shaving the pubic area. I am a female who needs some help. Whenever I shave I always wind up with ingrown hairs, chaffing and ugly bumps that can become painful in a day or so. I have exfoliated prior to shaving and I use a new blade, but I always have unsatifactory results. Sure it is nice for the day I shave, but then the problems begin. Because of this I tend to avoid shaving unless necessary. I use a trimmer to keep it nice, but I want to know the secrets that others use to prevent this problem. My husband and I will be visiting H2 in May and I want to have a pleasurable clothes-free body hair free vacation without having to worry about this. Thanks

I found that shaving in the shower works best and using a battery opperated razor. I also found that the more often you shave the better.

The other thing that you can try is to pluck the hair out with electric tweezers. This takes longer, but it will last longer.

Also, shave in the direction that the hir grows. This will also help.

Hapy shaving.

Bathe/ Shower before shaving.
Use a good shaving gel like Skintimate.
Don't press too hard with the Razor.
Shave once or twice a week untill your skin gets used to it.

Good luck.

i note you use a new blade, however one thing you might try is a "second new blade" these things dull fast; start with new and toss that thing, for another new blade,at halfway. [appox, all depends on hair thickness, and area shaved].

Wouldn't professional waxing at a salon be a better solution for you, Val?

Val,

ive been waxing for a few years now, i used to shave then switched to hair removal creams and found it too much maintenance(well for me as i am male and do the full body hair removal) so now i wax and haven't looked back.

Its a little un nerving the first couple of times especially doing the genitals but once you get used to it its not so bad.

Also waxing lasts about 4-6 weeks after the initial first 2-3 treatments providing you keep regular. And the hair grows back finer and weaker so regrowth is not so noticeable.

hope this helps

i sahve everything from head down. i am male, but i learned from females...like others before mentioned....i, too, shave in the shower. i use a good gel...skintimate (baby-powder formula for me), and a good blade....the venus divine...not just the normal disposable venus, but the divine. (spendy, yes, but worth it.) i shave daily. it takes a little getting used-to, but once you've done it a week or so, you'll never go back. start out every other day, then gradually work-up to every day. after i am dried-off, i usually apply some baby powder. never any sweat, or chaffing. tried all the creams for removal...allergies to all of 'em. good luck, and enjoy the freedom. jon http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/cool4.gif

Don't.

If, you are experiencing post-shaving difficulties as you describe, simply don't do it. Problems solved.

Val -- been shaving for years. I have found that shaving in a warm shower and applying some Gold Bond Medicated Lotion to the area after towelling off helps. It cools and also the medicated part will help the irritation and bumps.

Laser hair removal...

unless your hair is blonde or red or grey. It is not effective on those hair colors. My wife has done it. Type II skin, medium brown hair. Laser treatments worked nicely. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Waxing is the only way. I love it and it seems like hair grows back slower

The above advice is pretty good! Take it easy until your skin builds up some tolerance. To deal with the redness, you can use a little known remedy - Visine or some other eye drops. The solution is meant to take redness and irritation from your eyes, so it is certainly safe for other sensitive parts. It can help you get through the skin-conditioning process. Good luck!

Shaving in the shower works great, slow and easy should not have problem.

I tried Laser Hair Removal and it worked great on my bkack hair but did not work on grey. It is also very expensive.

Laser costs vary greatly. Between my wife and I, we have been to several places. I have finally found a place in my area, Maryland, that has prices similar to those found on the laserforless.com(Arizona area) website.

If anyone is interested in more information about a comparatively inexpensive laser place in Maryland, send me a PM for more details.

Val, I've been shaving for a couple of years and found that if you go with direction of the hair instead of against it your skin doesn't get as irritated. That has worked the best for me.

I don't shave anything except my face, but I always use a top quality razor from Gillete or Shick, one of the multi bladed ones. The blades are very sharp and last a long time. If you use an electric razor, the same is true--you get what you pay for.

I have found that you get the bumps in the begining, but it goes away after you've been shaving regularly.
Also, use a good skin lube and a new rasor, and then an "aftershave", (alcohol based).

If you want to shave "down there" the best way I found to is fill up your tub with warm/hot water and use the shever brand Intution. Get the sentive skin one. How it works is that you don't use shaving gel. The shaver has soap around the blades so as you shave the soap comes off and makes your skin soft like a gel would work. But always do it in the water. If I don't the same thing happens to me too. That's to best way for me. and the cheepest. But how ever you shave never shave all your hair off. you need some of it for protection from grems and such.

Trim it as close as you can. Go out and get started on a tan, this will toughen the skin. Use a Lady Schick Razor (little wires paralel to the blades to hold it off your skin) After shower or bath shave in the direction it grows. Use plenty of lotion, hand or facial applying twice a day. This will help soften the skin so when it starts to grow back it wont have to pop through the skin creating little red bumps. Repeat this every 2 or 3 days until you're comfy with more frequent. And try to refrain from any activity for the first day that might irritate the skin or cause sweat. Once ya get used to it its great but its tough to get started and then you wont want to go back.

I've been shaving my entire body for many years and have found that nice warm/hot bath water filled with baby oil works great for me. If I am at the health club showering and need to shave, I'll just use the shower water to shave with, but apply lotion as soon as I get home.

I've offered this next bit of info on a thong message board:

As for razor burns and the occasional breaking out issues, I use Mitchum deodorant to ease the burn and rash. Works like a champ!!

I shaved down there for the first time last week with a disposable razor and my usual shaving foam. I had no problems and no irritaion at all. I think, as can be seen from previous posts, that everybody's body reacts in a different way. Therefore the best thing to do is try everything until it works for you. If nothing works then dont shave!

For a couple of years now I've been using a device we call 'epilady' here in the U.K.. It's an electric tweezer system than pulls the hair out by the root. Sounds really painful but only for the first time and then a lot less than waxing yourself. The machine looks like an electric razor. When I use it now it's completely painless.

There must be an equivalent in the States.
It's intended for use on womens legs.

It takes a bit of practice to do the whole genital area but it's worth the effort and it lasts ages (about a month!) When I first started using this I used to get some bumps and ingrowing hairs but I've found a product called 'No Bump RX' which stops all that and does work. It's made in Los Angeles.

I'd really recommend it.

A.M.

i'm just chuckling here, because i shave with nothing but soap and warm water. one day, i came to the realization that shaving cream just costs way too much (let alone all these other alternatives), so i stopped buying it. i shave my face and pubic area once every four days (actually, i only shave some and give the rest a scissors-trim) or so, and i've been using soap for about a year and a half now. i'm either still on the same bar of soap or the second.

i don't have a problem with ingrown hairs, though. my wife does sometimes (especially under her arms), and as far as i know she just deals with it. i get the best results when i shave underwater in the bathtub.

I don't shave the hair above my penis, but have shaved my scrotum for several years (enjoy the look and find it more comfortable.) I just use the cheapest disposable razors (single blade), and either regular shaving soap or plain hand soap... doesn't seem to make much difference. I have found the Nivea makes an excellent makes a very good after-shave product called "Replenishing Balm". Takes away any irritation and leaves the skin soft. There is very little scent to it.

I've shaved for several years and find that doing it in the shower at the end of the shower and using multi-bladed shavers. The best results I've had was with a Gillette shaver with three blades.

Ordinary razors work fine with me - but I have to admit my hair is blonde and very fine.

I used to use the Gillette 3 blade razor but I am getting better results, with less irritation, using the Gillette Fusion 5 blade razor.

I use disposable razors and use them dry. No water no soap no nothing. Works great for me.

My pubic, beard and mustache hair is all very stiff and course. I preshave these areas with an electric shaver (NOT balls with the electric, only the stiff hair just above my penis). Then I prewet and apply some shave gel and use a triple-edged razor. In my experience, these blades last quite a while, and new blades tend to cut skin some, especially if you don't do completely straight strokes. I don't change blades until the blade tends to pull the hair some. I have to shave against the hair grain to get it down smooth. Sometimes, I often run the razor over some areas I find still bristly after soaping down in the shower.

When I first started on the pubic area, I had those red bumps. After some sun and use of a numbing lotion called Bikini Line, the red bumps went away.

Two key things for me:

1) Hair conditioner is the best thing for shaving! Used everything else, but quite by accident discovered the awesome benefits of simple hair conditioner.

2) Red bumps: using a 'loofah' sponge or nylon scrunchie type thing immediately eliminated all red bumps! For me, there's enough skins oils that build up under the skin that cause the bumps - the mild coarseness of the loofah allows the soaps to release the oils - voila! No bumps! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

use one of the little electric 3 blade stick shavers, they work great and are easy on the skin. the blades are kind of expensive but last a long time, they are worth every penny

I personally have a long soak in the bath (usually with foam bath or radox in it) which softens the hair, then using a three bladed razor shave the whole body, after I have got out of the bath I then use baby oil to stop any itching which very rarely happens these days anyway

val,
my wife had some of the very same problems in the begining but in time they seemed to work themselves out. Not entirely, you may still have some ingrown hair issues from time to time, I know I do, but nearly as pronounced as in the beginning. Hope this helps and hope you enjoy or enjoyed your trip to H2.
