In much of the same boat here, actually. Plus I got reduced to a dial-up connection using the only phone line in the apartment, so I can only post around midnight so we don't have missed calls.

a better connection isn't that expensive.

Well, AT&T/SBC/Yahoo domestically [USA] offers DSL for $12.95 to $14.95 [$USD] per month for a year. The only catch is that’s an introductory new client offer and after a year it goes to normal rate which is much higher. Some do not want to change their ISP's, and or all their account and email addresses.
