Nudists Parade to Take Place in Yekaterinburg (http://www.russia-ic.com/news/show/4561/)
This is the first time I've ever heard about something like this. Maybe we should try this in America.

Wow! This sounds really interesting! I would love to be able to see it in person. But we all know how bloody expensive it is to travel out of the country. This is especially true with the current issues regarding obtaining passports to get in and out of the country. Nevertheless, I wish them the very best of luck and hope it all comes out good and non-eventful.

Nudists Parade to Take Place in Yekaterinburg 16.08.2007
A unique event will take place in Yekaterinburg in August: 10 thousand nudists are going to marsh along the central avenue of the city. The parade is annually held in different countries all over the world and this year Russia was chosen to host it.
All members of the demonstration, which was originated 8 years ago, come from different countries. The participants believe their parade attracts people’s attention to the world nudity and raises their spiritual potential by the total disposal of all benefits of civilization.
Originally the organizers of the parade wanted the demonstration to take place in Moscow but were refused by the authorities. Nevertheless, we will see the parade in Yekaterinburg, if the local administration confirms this idea.

But who are these 10,000 people? Anybody know? The article is vague.

I haven't heard of that event before, but I could add these comments on where it is being held -
* the organisers are probably choosing a small town in Russia because there has been a history of attacks on various demonstrations and protest groups by nationalist gangs and other right wing groups of thugs, in the past, who are acting as a type of "moral police" in some areas - I would guess that's why Russian authorities wouldn't want the potential disruptions that such conflicts could cause in a major city.
*With travel over to there being an expensive exercise, I would assume most of the participants would come from parts of Russia, surrounding countries, and Europe in general?
*"raise their spiritual potential" - sounds like some of the organisers may be marching to their own drum, with an agenda outside of plain nudism and naturism, alone..
And with that link leading to a Russian newspaper, if only I had my Russian friend here to translate that Cyrillic for me...

There are 1,3 million inhabitants so it is not a town or smalls city. It is fifth largest in Russia.

Still..
not as big as Moscow, (where the population of the greater metropolitan area would probably be more than that of Finland, and possibly Oz' ?), nor St Petersburg, is it?? By comparison, here in Australia: Sydney has a population of just over 4.5 million, and Melbourne about 4 million - both considered "medium" size by international standards; while the greater "city" area of Newcastle, where I live (comprising 5 local council areas..) would have around half a million people. [I suppose Brisbane or Perth might be similar in size - and either of them could also seem likely places to hold such a procession at some future time ?]
Finland probably has the lowest population density in Europe, so I suppose by those standards 1,3 million souls is a sizeable population?
And even for such a medium-size city - by world standards - would they have the presence, or to the same extent, of those "nationalist" groups like the one in Moscow, shown in news reports attacking a couple of gay protesters a few weeks back ??
And then there's the infamous Moscow traffic conditions...

hey, will you look at that !!!
I was looking up the different locales above for comparisons, and found my hometown (Glendale, NSW Australia..) now has an entry in Wikipedia..
Fame, at last !
(wonder who put that on there? wasn't me - maybe the local council is putting all our towns in..)

No way same size as Moscow or St.Petersburg. In St. Petersburg area there are 14 million inhabitants (Leningradskaja oblast) and Moscow is even bigger.

Yep,
that's what I was thinking...
St Petersburg has over 14 million,
Moscow - over 15 million ?
Australia in total : 21 million
NSW : <9 million [just under..]
Finland : ~ 5,5 million ?
Sydney : > 4.5 million
Hunter Valley region : ~ 600,000
Helsinki : < 600,000 ?
