AKRON, Ohio - If an Ohio lawmaker's proposal becomes state law, Republicans would be barred from being adoptive parents.
State Sen. Robert Hagan sent out e-mails to fellow lawmakers late Wednesday night, stating that he intends to "introduce legislation in the near future that would ban households with one or more Republican voters from adopting children or acting as foster parents." The e-mail ended with a request for co-sponsorship.
On Thursday, the Youngstown Democrat said he had not yet found a co-sponsor.
Hagan said his "tongue was planted firmly in cheek" when he drafted the proposed legislation. However, Hagan said that the point he is trying to make is nonetheless very serious.
Hagan said his legislation was written in response to a bill introduced in the Ohio House this month by state Rep. Ron Hood, R-Ashville, that is aimed at prohibiting gay adoption.
"We need to see what we are doing," said Hagan, who called Hood's proposed bill blatantly discriminatory and extremely divisive. Hagan called Hood and the eight other conservative House Republicans who backed the anti-gay adoption bill "homophobic."
Hood's bill, which does not have support of House leadership, seeks to ban children from being placed for adoption or foster care in homes where the prospective parent or a roommate is homosexual, bisexual or transgender.
To further lampoon Hood's bill, Hagan wrote in his mock proposal that "credible research" shows that adopted children raised in Republican households are more at risk for developing "emotional problems, social stigmas, inflated egos, and alarming lack of tolerance for others they deem different than themselves and an air of overconfidence to mask their insecurities."
However, Hagan admitted that he has no scientific evidence to support the above claims.
Just as "Hood had no scientific evidence" to back his assertion that having gay parents was detrimental to children, Hagan said.
"It flies in the face of reason when we need to reform our education system, address health care and environmental issues that we put energy and wasted time (into) legislation (Hood's) like this," continued Hagan, who has been in the Ohio Senate nine years. Before the Senate, he served 19 years in the Ohio House.

I hope it opens some eyes. My personal opinion is that Republicans on average are worse parents than gay people.

Has Ohio become Idiot Central? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif
Hood's proposed law banning "homosexual" adoptions is laughable yet a serious threat to society should it be taken in any way seriously by the Ohio legislature.http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/dizzy2.gif
Hagen's responding proposed "law" really hits the nail on the head it its reasons for banning GOP adoptions based on "credible evidence". http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif
I ask again has Ohio become Idiot Central, and if it has, exactly when did it bcome so? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/bonk.gif

When it ceased being a democracy due to gerrymandering and electronic voting.

That has to be one of the most idiotic statements I have ever seen posted on this board.
I can see good and bad in all people but you and the other mouth pieces on here are so bias against the present administation that I now automatically ignore all your comments.

HAHAHA!!! That is great!
It is funny to see some of the bigotry slammed back into those who initiate it. I would never seriously support either bill.

Naturist Mark hit the nail on the head when he said it was gerrymandering and electronic voting. Ohio has become a laughing stock across the country with a Governor convicted of a felony while in office still in office. We have "Coingate" with"the millions lost in "valuable" coin investments. The whole systemm in Ohio is "pay-to-play." I am unhappy with the whole thing and will vote out the current administration and legislators when I get the chance in May and November.
The press says the proposed ban on homosexual adoption is discriminatory and will not make it out of conference. I am watching the progress as I feel in this state we are becoming more separated based on political views and not focused on building the economy so the state will not be bankrupt.
"May you live in interesting times" is a blessing and a curse!

I'm so glad I moved OUT of Ohio. At one time it was a great place to raise your kids. But now, it's just a state with way too many people. And bad politicians.....Opp's their everwhere, Ohio's are just dumber.
I hope Jerry Springer runs, and get elected there. If everyone in Hocking county registers to vote then does....he's in.
OH------IO
I'm still a Buckeye, always will be.

LOL. Good old Jerry. I like him a lot more now that I've heard his radio show - which is nothing like his TV show (which he is the first to admit it awful - but pays well). On the radio he is a staightforward thoughtful guy, I can see why Cincinnati made him mayor. But he is NOT running this year for Governor or Senator. Maybe in '08, but wouldn't count on it.

I wonder, so which political party do married couples tend to vote for? I think you know the answer to that one.

Considering that you just replied to one of Jon's posts, I'd say that you aren't doing too well in automatically ignoring his posts. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/tongue.gif

Let's see, nationally approximatley 49% of the population are Dems. Do you really think that the demographics can be that different or do you just like making jibes?

According to polls from May of last year, it appears that wives would tend to vote Democrat by a margin of 16% more than husbands. Gender Gap (http://www.thenation.com/blogs/edcut?pid=5756). That gap has probably increased since then. <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">As the ‘Women's Monitor' survey argues, women want politicians who will demonstrate personal accountability, care about people in need and provide equality of opportunity ... women consider themselves "the arbiter of family values" and the "central caregivers" in their families, not the government. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Still looking for information specifically about "married couples".

Surely the members of the legislature of both parties in OHIO...could serve the people better than this...are there no serious problems to be solved...like feeding and caring for the babies..and older citizens of OHIO...or building schools & roads...these political circus antics serve no one well...JMHO

You mean like Virginia's legislators did with their "butt crack bill" http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/rolleyes2.gif Maybe we should lock both legislatures up in the same room. I feel so much safer when our lawmakers are out of session.
