I was at a resort last weekend and have seen this many times but for some reason it struck me as funny this time. I saw a boy riding his bicycle with nothing but a helmet on. It got me thinking that if he fell his head would be protected but he would get a real good case of road rash. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/no.gif

What you say is true but.......road rash will heal............a head injury may not and could be fatal.

Be safe out there......especially if you're naked! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Hi David. Saw you there. Didn't seem to have time to stop and say hello though.

Some naked road-rash I could do without, and some of it may be worst than a head injury, for a fellow! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/blush.gif I might prefer the head injury!! (upper)! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

Frank

I was busy trying to keep up with my two boys. Seems like every time you turn around they snuck off somewhere. Hopefully see you next time we're down. Later.

Yeah, I know. One crashed a party at our place last year for a hotdog. We fed him, but I think it took 3 months to figure out who's he was! DOn't worry, it wasn't a problem, and he was well behaved. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

I think the only reason that the kid was wearing a helmet was because the LAW requires it. When i was a kid I rode my bike without a helmet . I never had a helmet and i never hurt myself, other than a few grazes from spills. Of course the roads were not as crowded with cars as they are now.

I think being forced to wear a helmet on private land is a bit tough. The chances of having a serious head injury at the bike speeds attained in a resort would be very very small. The "over the top" legal system and unreasonable accident claims have caused far to many laws "FOR OUR PROTECTION" . Soon we will be required to stay in bed because of the danger of getting out of bed http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/freak.gif

The over the top work and safety rules are making the younger generation into a bunch of WIMPS.

I know from personal experience that helmets save lives. In fact, I probably would not be writing this if it weren't for wearing a helmet.

I was 11, going on a bicycle trip/campout with my Boy Scout troop. About a mile or two away from the starting point of the trek, my fanny pack got caught in the bicycle chain, causing the bike to flip 360 degrees forward and flinging me onto the sidewalk. I was wearing a helmet and had braces at the time, so my face and mouth were all cut up. I still have a scar above my upper lip from that accident.

Helmets save lives. Kids should wear them, as should adults.

FWIW, the child in question was obeying the wishes of his parents. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

Yes I know helmets do save lives and seatbelts save lives BUT

Perhaps if there was not so many health & safety rules we would all learn to be MORE CAREFUL.

For example, we all know that one MUST NOT use a knife to try to move burning toast in a toaster when it is on because we might electrocute ourselves to death. So we don't do that. Should there be some protection device fitted to the toaters so we cannot electrocute ourselves ?

Not a solution for the statisticians. The bed remains the place where most people die.

That's probably true, since the leading cause of death is... BIRTH! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/beam.gif
