I think the idea as being discussed over in the Naturist Recoginition (http://clothesfreeforums.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3400016152/m/7500092864/p/1) thread is for the logo to be recognized by fellow nudists but be somewhat ambiguous to non-nudists. Otherwise why not just use the AANR logo?

Understood. The AANR emblem was an example of an explicitly nudist insignia that offers no ambiguity. The fine sketches in the gallery are similar in that they are explicit. Nothing wrong with that, but not what someone who is looking for a 'nudist recognition' emblem that is not obviously about nudism to the uninitiated is looking for.

The last one...first thing I thought was,"New Mexico Nudists?"
The sunflower can almost be Kansas Nudists, but I like the sunflower one...it could use some tweeking!

I like the sunflower one but have one question. If we are looking for some sort of logo to identify nudists why are we stuck on the capital letter "N" ?

We should be looking at something more universal that identifies us despite the language spoken by the observer. Not all people speak or use a language where the capital "N" would be recognized as a symbol for nudism.

Why not call a spade a spade and have a logo that will be recognized everywhere in the world. I am not an artist but would recomment a silhouette or an outline drawing of a nude male and female. It could be done tastefully so that even the most prudish American is not offended.

I think it needs to be something original and The Capital N is definatley not original.

I re-state my feelings - if this is something that I'm going to have on my vehicle (which is used at work), the insigna has to be subtle - identifiable to naturists, but not outwardly obvious as to what it stands for. The "N" has so many meanings, Naturst, Nudist, Nude, Natural that it seems to have significance. I also like the idea of "FREE" in the insignia.

The 'N' is multilingual since it stands for nudism, naturism, naturisme, nackt etc in most European languages.

Now if you really want a 'stealth' symbol, how about just the sunflower? It stands for nature and sunshine, but would only be nudist specific to those who know what it is supposed to stand for.

Or to fans of the movie 'Calendar Girls'.

I agree with what you say Mark but most of the world is not of European descent - most of Asia, Africa and South Pacific IS NOT. WHY NOT FIND SOMETHING THAT IS UNIVERSAL.

Hiya all I was just wandering how much we want to put into this. I was Thinking maybe something even as simple as maybe footprints. Or something else. I like the Sun with free in it. I just think we need to get away from the "N". I would like to maybe get this to the sticker people by the end of the month so I can get a price estimate. So feedback is needed. Just join right in and add your designs. Thanks to all who have already done so.

Just a thought to who ever takes this idea in for quotes. I know I won't put bumper stickers on my car. I would however, put a window cling inside my rear window. There might be a little more cost to having a cling made but you could transfer it between vehicles should you buy a new one, etc. No messy stickers to try and scrape off your bumper.

I added an image - modifying one already posted. I changed the font for the 'N' (simpler), and added some bare buns at the bottom. Looking at it now, I'd change the color to something darker - perhaps the same as for the outlining circle.

I agree with DenitaLC about the clingy / bumper sticker thing.

A lot of European naturists think "FKK" is synonymous with naturism. Anything with a letter might not become recognized as a universal symbol. Especially in non western-alphabet countries.

How about taking ownership of the happy face, and making it a worldwide symbol of naturists? It would have the added advantage that it could be typed with a standard keyboard, using just two keystrokes - a colon and a right curved bracket.
http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif

If anything, it would reduce it's incidence. (As it is that thing really bugs me.)

I like the feet, sun, and FR EE a lot! The sunflower on the one heel seems to stick out a bit, though. I think I'd like a simpler one without the sunflower (ie, more 'bare' feet)

Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes" is a very special case.

Watterson's comic ran from 1985 until 1995 when Watterson quit at the height of its popularity. He quit because he refused to play by the rules (like Calvin).
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Comic strips exist through three different entities. The creator of the strip or cartoonist, the syndicates which operate as a sort of middle-man, and the newspapers themselves which actually publish the strips. Newspapers publish comic strips because for many of us, that's one of the few reasons to buy a newspaper nowadays. If you want news, you can watch CNN or read about it on the 'Net. However, newspapers also want to cut costs so they have been making comic strips smaller. They also have many specifications for what they will publish, which place constaints on the cartoonists. Syndicates are looking for ways to own the cartoonist's characters and ideas so they can make more money on merchandising and won't be restricted by the demands of the cartoonist, who they treat like hired labor anyway. Bill Watterson fought the established system for doing things, because this system is largely unfair not only to the cartoonist but the consumer. Consequently, he ticked off everybody, including fellow cartoonists who are perfectly happy with the way things are going and don't mind selling out for big bucks. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
Watterson refused permission to United Press Syndicate to license Calvin & Hobbes (except for a few non profit promotional items). Yet Calvin stands peeing on the back windows of a million pickup trucks, not a one of which paid a cent of royalty to Watterson. He has made no attempt to enforce copyright* on the vendors who sell those window stickers. Apparently he is making a bit of a statement.

-Mark

*United Press Syndicate did threaten to file suit against some window sticker makers in the early days. A few did change the appearance of the boy, others did not. Watterson did not support the Syndicate's actions and no suits were ever filed. Watterson wryly commented, "I clearly miscalculated how popular it would be to show Calvin urinating on a Ford logo."

Sorry, I've been a way for a while, but am happy to see this thread is still active, and has some great postings. I would like to re-state my feelings on this idea once again... I think a NON-DESCRIPT logo is what is needed - something identifiable amongst ourselves, but not outwardly obvious to the general textile population what it stands for. This allows us to be anonymous when needed.
The only thing I can think of that closely parallels my idea is the rainbow logo used by gay people. Not that I’m for or against gays, but their logo closely replicates the idea of a type of recognition needed for naturists.
Although the gay rainbow insignia, or logo is quite well known today, when it was originally started, it was a way for gay people to identify each other as well as show their lifestyle preference. To the unknowing, it was just… a rainbow, but to the gay population, it was a way of identifying someone with like-mindedness. If someone inquired about the meaning of the rainbow, and the person wanted to remain anonymous, they could just say they like the colors of the rainbow and dismiss it at that.
That is why I think that something simple, like the barefoot idea, or the sun logos are best suited for our needs. I personally wouldn’t use anything that has outwardly obvious content in it. Anybody else share my feelings on this?

Agree with Tsirutan, slightly vague/non-descript would suit my bumper best. I like the sun with free in the middle and also the one titled 'Daughters Work'. Both look good and if they were to be sold in nudist resorts etc would make sense to other nudists when seen on cars

Some of us have reasons for keeping a low profile, especially considering how ignorant some of the textile community can be, when the subject of social nudism is brought up.

I would like a nudist/naturist logo which would make it possible for us to identify one another without advertising to outsiders.

Remember That the stickers will need to be black and white so please keep that in mind. They charge for each color that goes into the sticker. And with this just starting out I dont want to invest a whole lot of money in this until I am sure everyone wants to do this. So please say which design you like the best. I am voting for the free feet.

I like the Earth w/ sunglasses one. Totally non-identifiable by those not "in the know". Otherwise, I like the sun w/ venturian man.

Cool sign. Wish we could see more like it here in the U.S,or one with the same meaning. One,or more in Alabama, would be great, though it'll never happen, likely.

I have 2 Hash House Harrier stickers on my car which are basically the outline of a footprint and someone asked me the other day if they were a symbol for nudism. I was impressed yet had to tell them that unfortunately it was for a running group.
