View Full Version : Name that tree
Hi everyone. We took a day trip to Sequoia yesterday, it was beautiful. My question is does anyone know what those trees are called with the beautiful purple/pink blossoms? They are scattered throughout the evergreens. Would these trees survive in the Central Valley with our 100 degree plus weather in the summer? Outdoorbare, do you know? Thanks for any help.

Uhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmm...if I had to guess, I would say it's a Monty Python thing.
Oh yeah, DUH!! It says so right at the bottom of post...I must be blonde too...
Good answer gamblefish, I knew I could count on you. It's just so obvious, Monty Python, why didn't I think of that? Now what about the tree? /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

bigbird, your not a moron yet, your getting better!
OK, so my Monty Python knowledge is basically limited to a very few scenes from "Flying Circus" and the movies, "...and the Search for the Holy Grail" and "The Life of Brian".
Now that would be an intersting group, Nudist Monty Python fan club.

gamblefish don't you hate it when your cover gets blowed like that?
to h.w. i do not know the name of your tree, but most likely it would not live long in your area.
like dogwoods and pawpaw's it most likly needs moderate temps and shady areas to grow.
hope that is some help to you.
Thanks Tarsus, You made my day. Guess I'll just have to go back to the mountains to enjoy these trees. No down side to that. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Hi Hw ...The Trees you mentioned are Redbud ...Cercis canadensis ...even though they are more purple than red. I have some growing across the street from my home here in the lowlands where it gets up to 105 in the Summer. They are fairly easy to grow. They can be spectacularly beautiful in March along Hwy 140 leading into Yosemite too

These tree's sure sound nice!!
HW, could you or some one take a picture and post it. Would like to see what your local forest and yards look like.
I have never been to California and would love to see some of the landscape. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
ercNY
Sorry..I just looked it up in my plant manual and the California native is Cercis occidentalis...Western Redbud...also known as the Judas Tree.
Thanks outdoorbare, so it can survive in hot temps. That's great.
*************************************************
ercNY, everything here is pretty and green, for now. Come summer, most of it will be brown. My roses are starting to bloom, will try to post some of them. I have one that blooms both yellow and red roses! We also have some beautiful pictures of a beach on the coast. Will try to send those also. We have mostly agriculture here so there are lots of fields here. Hope to here from y'all soon. /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

a redbud? this just confirms what i have always known, all trees look alike. sorry about bad info, thank you outdoor bare. maybe i will just "stick" to jokes, not "bark" just to hear the wind blow,
and hope not to fall out of my own tree again, as it's an ugly tree and last time i hit very branch
on the way down.
tarsus...Actually the redbud is more like a bush ...but I thought I'd better not go there... /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Outdoorbare......Why not go into the bush? I have 6 mature rose-bushes, and just recently added 3 more. They are just starting to bloom. Hope we'll have some of those beautiful colors for Easter. On a side note, my neighbor told me to prune the rose bushes in January so I could have a nice, full bush in the spring. I told her I already had one. /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Do NOT go into the bush, outdoorbare!!
There are voices in there and they will make you do terrible, terrible things!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAARRRGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
OK Gamblefish, Keep on making jokes about the voices and they'll take over your brain too!!!!
Oops! Too Late!!!! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
hw ..Actually I was thinking of Pres Bush..but your bushes are much more interesting... /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif My roses are just starting to form buds..We still had frost a few days ago at the 700 ft elev. I did prune them in January...Much shorter than I usually do....Double Delight is one of my favorites. /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Outdoorbare, I do not know the names of many of my bushes(Gamblefish, new topic?), but I have one called sterling silver. The blooms are light purple color with very few thorns. I now have nine rose bushes in my front yard. I have some that are varigated orange/yellow/red with such great fragrance.
I hope to plant my backyard with roses some day. I think roses are my favorite flowering plant. Not only do they do well in the heat, it seems I have a green thumb with them. Houseplants are a whole other story. I have killed airferns and cactus! Duh! How hard can it be to take care of a plant that doesn't require regular water? I guess I'll just stick with outdoor plants for now.
Good Day! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No problem, the voices tell me what to say. They tell me you want to play the game too. They think Gamblefish and I are just too much alike. They said we need some new players.
