I think my avatar answers this question! http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif

I do have a wonderful dog named Tanner as well. Alas, if I lived somewhere where I had to chose between a cat and a dog for a pet, I would have to chose cat. They are easier to maintain some days and there is nothing like lying on the couch reading, with a blanket on you and a cat or two holding down the blanket!

Dogs, especially puppies. Why? Dogs are portable love. Plutonic love on four legs. Yes, they may involve more maintenance, but dogs always love you. Rodents, lizards, and fish probably don't even have the cognitive powers to recognize you.
Cats....well....cats know who you are, but often I find that when you walk into a room, the cat attitude is something like "Oh, it's you. You'd better feed me before I scratch up some furniture." A dog's attitude however is more like "IT'S YOU!!!! WHERE WERE YOU FOR THE LAST HALF HOUR?! I'M SO GLAD TO SEE YOU!!!!"

Our dogs are our family.
Well, there are the grandkids.

Although, I have adopted a rather skittish Dust Bunny I named Harry and he gives me great pleasure watching him bounce all over the place.
So I guess he's my favorite right now. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/wink3.gif

When I was a kid [ way way back in the dark ages] I had a team of oxen. Sam and Pete purebred Holstiens. I had them trained so well, they could be off in the pasture and if I only called one the other would stay there and moo until I called him. I never used a whip it was all voice comand. I had to sell them when I went to school in New Hampshire. Now my pet is a Chow dog. He is a good dog but don't come into my room if I am in bed. Just don't do it. Only my stepdaughter and son can.

Have a nice day and stay naked Foux003

We had a Newf Mix Dog (Huge Dog), who was a wonderful family member up until the summer.

I Think the best part I had about her was her sitting with the kids in the morning until they got onto the school bus, then she would come running into the house and eat breakfast with the toddler. She was always there for the kids, and she would be waiting for them in the driveway when they got home. (with a big smile on her face, and tail wagging)

I have ferrets. They are not a pet for everyone but they are extremely fun to have and will even talk to you if you can learn their language. Had one that would sleep under the covers with me every night, reallly got attached to that little animal and miss her dearly.

Ferrets need allot of attention, a high maintenance animal. Then need special food to be healthy and need allot of 'out' time. That is they need to be out of the cage at least 4 hours every day. I find that high end kitten kibble is ok for them but genuine ferret food is better. They need low ash, rice filler, and high fat high protein diet in the kibble.

My favorite ferret of all died last summer. I used to grasp her head gently but like a base ball and gently shake it side to side. She loved that and would come to me and push her head into the palm of my hand seeking a 'head shake'.

The ones I have now are rescues, have had many rescued animals over the years. People see them in the shop and "OH ! How Cute! I want one !!" and buy the animal not knowing a thing of the animal needs or even what to feed it. Then after a month or two the animal is no longer of interest and suffers. The lucky ones are farmed out to rescue shelters or find other homes like mine.

The two I have now are both snow white but one is a true albino. They are named Pete and RePete. One loves to give me 'kisses' and the other flips out and acts like a kitten on a tripple dose of cat nip. A laugh a minute! One can't help but love a ferret!

LOL so true, have you seen the movie Meet the Parents? I forget exactly what it is that De Niro says, but something along the lines of dogs are easy and re-assure you, while cats make you work for it http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif It's much funnier when he says it!

I for one can't pick between cats and dogs, I love them both for different reasons. I have a cat because my parents are NOT pet people and could only get away with the more low-maintenance aspect of my cat. But as soon as I have my own place I'll hopefully have a dog and rescue a few unwanted bunnies from the shelter as well (those poor little guys never get adopted!).

Here's Emma snoozing in my bed http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/happy.gif She was a college cat - so she loves people and shows off all her "tricks" (aka things she's not supposed to do and she knows it) whenever a new person comes over.

To the dog, you're family.

To the cat, you're staff.

My favourite pet was a cat named Pebbles; she was (she passed away a year ago) a tortoise shell. She was 19 years old. She was always really friendly and never turned down a hug. She loved spending time with the family.

Just thinking, I remember Pebbles never like wearing a collar, every time we put one on her she would work some way of either tangling it up or getting it caught in something so we would have to remove it! Maybe she disliked wearing things too!! In the end she never really wore a collar!

Miss ya Pebbs!

My favorite pet(s) are our cats. The more affection you give, the more you get. When I'm away from home, I know they're happy to see me as I'll sit down on our couch, and the 7 yr. old will immediately curl up in my lap.

Our cats (three of them aged: 7, 5, almost 3) are not declawed and won't extend the claws into me except when kneading. At those times, I pull my towel under their paws.

Also, we can go away for a few days and not worry about them as long as we put out lots of water and food and make sure the 2 large litter boxes are clean.

One of the 3, Sylvestra, will not wear a collar. She gets out and loses them within 24 hrs. The other 2, Pandora & Teva, reluctantly wear them. The collars have flat brass tags so that if they do find themselves away from our area and hurt, etc., we can get a phone call and the tags will not get caught in anything.

All three are indoor-outdoor cats.

This is true with guppies. I never realized that fish could have a personality until we own one. People couldn't get over how he reacted differently to my wife and I compared to them when approaching his bowl.

My favorite pets are our cats and a dog. Yeah, they get along just fine. The dog "Patch" is a Black Lab/Doberman, about three years old. She was a stry that we rescued on a very cold, rainy day in a village where she was trying to find a friendly family. She was grossly underweight from starvation, so we rescued her, got her all of her shots, and fed her ravenous appetite. Now she is a very strong and fast girl.

The cats are Missy (15 years old, Calico female), Garfield (6 years old, longhair orange tiger stripe male, another stray), Ebony (4 years old, solid black female stray we rescued from the woods), and Smokey Mountain Joe (2 1/2 year old, smokey gray male stray we rescued on a very cold, stormy, Thanksgiving Day).
We love'm all, equally, they are our family!

I have 25 or so koi fish in a 1500 gal. pond at my back door. Maybe they are just stupid but they will come to the surface when anyone comes by. They are looking for food but don't seem to care who feeds them. They don't seem to be able to tell who is at the pond only that they want food. Also I feed them well so they are not realy hungry, but when they see someone they will go to that end of the pond.

Backyard ponds are a pleasure. The plants, fish and water all work together to make your back yard more interesting. Around here there are pond clubs for this hobby.

I suspect that koi are not very bright. But that doesn't mean that these children aren't loved by their "parents".

I have a small fish pond in the back. The 'guys' in there will come to the surface seeking the feed I throw in. Is only a conditioned relex.

But for a real pet I have ferrets. They are not a pet for every one, need lots of maintenance and attention, and special expensive feed to be healthy but they are a great little animal. One sleeps with me every night. Both love people and love attention.

Ferrets are insatiably inquitive and will investigate everything over and over. They will notice anything new in a room and of course immediately investigate it.

They are extremely sensitive to any diet change. They love sugar and especially chocolate but that is deadly to them. Many people feed their ferrets rasins and they love them but that will cause insulomona and a long painful death from sugar intolerance.

Over all they are a great pet and I love mine to death and then some. Have had one be featured in an international calendar and also was on TV. Such a celebrity covered in fur!
