I'd like to try sketching nudes, but am trying to think of good scenes, poses, etc. to try. Just want something that represents a good study of the human form. Anyone know of an art site that offers drawing tips, or examples to sketch?

I?ve been drawing the human figure for years (art is a hobby of mine) and now I?m helping my daughter with her art (she wants to go into Communication Design when she grows up) so I?ve had a little experience looking for online tutorials in art.

There?s a series of books that, while meant for Manga style art, I?ve found to be good basic all around art books. They?re all labeled ?How to Draw Manga? and I highly recommend them even if you want to draw realistic figures rather than animated or comic. The web site is http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/
They?re online tutorial page is http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/tutorial/tutorial.html
But I highly recommend their books. They?re good solid art books and have very good directions for any artist. They would be worth the money.

Some other sites are:
http://theanimaster.airwalking.com/html/main1.htm
http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/.
http://omu.kuiki.net/
http://susanooh.anime.net/Art/Class/index.html

Also look at photos as references for the human figure. Go to the INA photo section and use the photos as models and draw them.

I?ll tell you the same thing I tell me daughter. The best way to learn to draw is to draw and to draw and then to draw some more. And when your done drawing then sit down and draw some more.

Finally, you need to remember that the most important thing about drawing is to have fun.

Good luck and enjoy! /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I am an artist also and you will be surprised how many live models you'll get once you are out in the artistic community /infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

So get to it! You'll love it! /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Greetings Trav,

I belong to a group on Yahoo called the Figure Drawing Factory. This group is for people of all levels of drawing. Some of the members do just the drawings in various forms of media using oil, charcol, pastels, crayons, water color, and pencil take your pick as to what you are comfortable with while some of the other members are models who have posted pictures of themselves for the artist to draw. If you want to experiment with and try something but would like tips you can post about it I am sure there is someone in the group that is either is using that form or has tried it themselves at some point. My current preference is using pencil. Happy drawing.

I used to draw some myself. I did mostly nudes. I got just about all the pictures I copied from nudist sites such as the INA site and others. I second the individual who recommended the INA site as a source.

LeoNJ,
That yahoo group sounded interesting but when I went there it looked dead. There's been on 2 postings and they were back in October. Did you have in mind another group by chance?

There's been on 2 postings and they were back in October. Did you have in mind another group by chance? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>I am one of the co-owners of the group that LeoNJ referred to. We actually have two groups - one more public than the other. The one he referred to is the more public one. There are very few posts there as its purpose is to allow those so inclined to see the drawings that the figure drawing factory has done without necesarily joining the group itself. So, there won't be much there to look at in terms of posts, but if you join it, and look in the photos section you will see drawings that have resulted from the group. The name of the less public figure drawing factory group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/figure_drawing_factory

I might also note that unlike many, if not most, of the photos in the INA photos section, the figure drawing factory photos/models can do something that those photos cannot - we can talk and interact with the artist(s). The concept being that it offers something more closely resembling a "live model session" (without being, due to constraints of geography) than just some random photo that was probably not necesarily even intended to be used as drawing reference.

Ben.

Amazon.com has some really good books of nude photos made by artists for drawing reference. A Japanese publishing company produced a series of books called, "Pose File" they're hard to fing now but worth the look. Another great book is "The Nude: A Visual Reference for Artists." They have hundreds of gerat pictures. The last time I photographed a model I took the book along to get some ideas for good poses. It really helped. Sometimes when I am photographing a model over and over I tend to get stuck thinking of good poses. These books really help

"The Painter's Keys" is a free e-mail newsletter by artist Robert Genn, a painter from British Colombia. It is highly recommended. Genn started his newsletter in 1999 as a way to form a community to help empower artists. Newsletters are sent twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, and feature an article about art with art quotations for inspiration. You can sigh-up for it at;

I've gone to GOOGLE & typed in Rubens or Raphael for their drawings to copy from. I like the way they drew. There are also drawings oby Da Vinci and most other masters you could think of.
I'm still trying to learn to draw hands.....I've improved quite a bit in the past six moths, too.
It's good to know there are others with the same interests.

Ben M and Outdoorbare,
Thanks for the offer. I joined the Products group last night. And I just applied for the other group mentioned by Ben. I'll post something to it so you know it's me.

BTW, saw your art outdoorbare. Very nice work. I'm impressed.

ODB and LEO, thanks for telling us about the Figure Drawing Factory. I just joined the group and am impressed with some of your works! Haven't figured out the assignment/submittal process yet but hope to contribute soon.

Being an artist my entire life, it's probably easy for me to say, but my personal opinion of doing nude art is to just do it ...over and over. Do people really need instruction to sketch? I find that some don't and some require only a tip or two. But the important thing is to start by drawing every chance you get.

The figurative gallery on my website (www.bohnegrafx.com/gallery (http://www.bohnegrafx.com/gallery))shows a variety of techniques, but I still LOVE to DRAW the nude. I recently completed one of a lady from the resort that I frequent and once again fell in love with dry media (conte crayon... warm toned chalks).

Art is so personal that everyone has a different approach and the key is finding what is right for you. I much prefer working from live models, but even the right photo reference can provide a good source. If you work from life, you begin to see the body as an animated being and that gives the opportunity to see (and hopefully draw) more life in your art.

I find a lot of inspiration from simply looking at other works of art...

I'd be interested in connecting with an artist who could do illustrations for nudist clip art.

I've always been interested in sketching and I've always wanted to try nude art, but I've never really had any good images to work off of. I signed up for the club, and hopefully that will help me out. The only thing now is wondering how to keep my sketches hidden from my parents, who might disapprove.

An artist should never have to hide any sketches or art. That becomes censorship. And it tries to set art back just like some religions wish to setback the development of mankind. While I am not advocating this, I found an interesting quote by artist Paul Gaugin-

"Nail up some indecency in plain sight over your door - From that time forward, you will be rid of all respectable people, the most insupportable folk God has created."

For parents (or anyone) to somehow construe something indecent about art and to restrict an artist (or budding artist's) subject matter or exploration in art is unconscionable. Or ignorant. Excuse my speaking my mind, by I am passionate about what I do. To quote another artist:

"In art, immorality cannot exist. Art is always sacred." - August Rodin

Your e-mail id is "bouncing" (not accepting messages), so I can't seem to keep you as a member of the group, and I can't contact you about it either (except here). I noticed you re-requested membership, and I approved it again, but you're still bouncing????.
