I spent most of last weekend at the Shangri La nudist resort north of Phoenix and why is it that no one under 50 goes there. Am I the only young nudist in AZ. It would be nice to have people my age to talk to at some of these places.

Try Mira Vista, outside of Tucson.

We just visited Mira Vista the last weekend of October and had a blast. While we were the youngest couple there, everyone was very friendly. When Sunday came we did not want to leave. They are in the planning stage for expanding but the grounds as they are now are perfect.
Very much recommended and will be going back as soon as possible.

Hi,
I've been to Mira Vista three times this year. The last time in early October. Must say it's one nice place to visit. The staff is great and makes you feel welcome. This is especially nice for a single male. The restaurant is great as well as the bar, it's nice to be able to enjoy dinner and a drink on the grounds. Always having a hard time to leave it behind and go back to the real world so to speak. I hope the expansion doesn't destroy it too much. Although one of the first things to go will be that waterfall behind the pool, but I guess that's progress.
I plan to return again early next year.

I have a friend who is permanent resident of Shangri La nudist resort north of Phoenix, and understand they have a clubhouse but no bar, and no alcoholic drinks are allowed in the clubhouse.

That is what I loved about Mira Vista was the fact that they had a bar. Down side was you had to cover up waist down when at the bar. Plus side is they are working on a larger bar that will be closer to the pool area. But over all the bar was another great place to relax and meet some great people.

Has to do with the liquor laws in the state. I believe it's geared more towards strip clubs, where the girls must wear underwear if alcohol is served. Wish there was a way around it

I have only been to a couple of nudist resorts (Four Seasons in Canada and Berkshire Vista in MA) and at both places the majority of people were over 50. I'd even say that the majority are over 60.
It really is a problem trying to find anyone to talk to. I don't want to imply that I'm ageist but I spent most of my time with my nose in a book due to a lack of conversation.
There are other threads on here on with ideas on how to get younger people to try nuding. While I think the club owners see the need to attract younger nudes in order to have a viable business, I think most of the senior nudists are quite content to just keep the clubs the way they are - in their comfort zone.

The beautiful waterfall at Mira Vista is the backdrop to the conversation pool and adjacent water volleyball pool, currently under construction. The conversation pool was specifically designed to wrap around the base of the waterfall basin. Previously, the huge back patio and waterfall area were very underused. The new facilities will bring this lovely landscaped area of the resort into the main pool area. Completion should be in March.

The AZ liquor license issue with regards to below-the-waist coverups is being worked on. Mira Vista is the first nudist resort in AZ to have a liquor license and current rules applying to nudity were drafted for the strip club industry. In California, Treehouse Fun Ranch (now Deer Park) was the first to get a liquor license and it took them quite a long time, and then it came with a grandfather clause that required clubs to be in business 10 years before getting the license. Desert Shadows appealed to get that provision changed many years later.

Then do something to bring your friends that are your age.
One of the problems often heard about certain groups and clubs - "oh, we'd go (a man/woman couple) but there are too many single men there"....
Well, HEY, if you went as a couple, and brought other couples with you, then there wouldn't be that imbalance now, would there?
I am now hearing the same thing about younger people. "We don't wanna go, I'm the only young person there."
SUGGESTION = Why not try to assemble a group of younger people -- and gather them up and GO on the same day?

So how was your trip to Mira Vista? My wife and I have set picked the last week in April for our first visit to a nude resort, also at Mira Vista, and would love to hear more about it

Sorry for the delay in our response regarding our trip to Mira, but life has been hectic and we are in the process of trying to move a bit closer to Mira. The trip was great and as usual the people there were great. The St.Patty's Day party was fun in the new lounge and you are actually (while we were there) able to bring in your own alcohol because I was told they did not activate the liquor license for the building yet. The conversational pool is a nice addition and was typically about 98 to 100 degrees and held 38 people according to the sign. The additional volleyball pool was great as well. Only bad thing is the filter vents are raised so you have to be careful to not stub your toes on them. Again as before we had a wonderful time and can't wait to get back there ASAP.

I read on another forum recently that nudity is not allowed on the whole property, just in the "pool areas" is that true? I checked their web site and they don't specify.

When I visited a few months ago, nudity was required in the pool area and in the hot tub, but was encouraged elsewhere on the site. The only place where nudity was not allowed was in the building which contained the restaurant, business office and the bar. This was because of Arizona liquor laws. With the opening of the new bar area, this may have changed, but it is not clear to me.
The only other issue was that near the edges of the property, nudity was a bit problematic because of the closeness of the neighbors. However, it is not true that nudity is allowed only in the pool area.

That is what I had hoped, thanks for the info
I visit Shangri La a couple of times a month and am not over 50 (but close now). Attendance is down and but it is still a fun place to go to. I can always count on having a blast playing pool volleyball and all are welcomed to join.
This last weekend though, they were remodeling the main pool and this was probably at least partially as a result of a new federal law that may affect more resorts. The following link http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2009/05/04/20090504pooldrains0504.html details the requirements - some irony because at nudist resort pools, no clothing is permitted. This no doubt will further adversely affect attendance until the remodel is completed, though this has been going on for three weeks so far (so I was told).
The economy may also be affecting attendance - I encourage all to visit and help keep this place a nudist resort in the Phoenix area for years to come.
Not a whole lot posted about AZ since my last post. I can report that all the pools at Shangri La are up and in great shape. Yesterday we had the Labor Day Pool Volley Tournament and I can say it was a great success (no, my team did not win, though we were there to the end). There were several under 30 couples in attendance, some for the first time. I had been to Mira Vista last weekend (been there several times) and can say that the mix is about the same age wise. Both places are great fun (specially the volleyball) so you cannot go wrong going to either location. Hope some of you out there who are looking for something to do today will venture out to either location.

We were at Shangri La Ranch over Labor Day and had a blast. So much so that we became members when we checked out. I guess we are bringing the average age down a bit though probably not much seeing as we are 27 and 26. I even got a nice little towel for being on the winning team of the volleyball tourny. Now that we are members there we will be going more often since it is only about 30 to 45 minutes away for us. We would love to meet younger couples that want to form a group and we can arrange to go on the same days. If anyone is interested we will be there for the Fall Festival Oct. 9th to 12th if anyone is interested in heading up there. Not bashing Mira but we actually preferred Shangri La more and everyone was great.

Looks like it may be time to head to shangri La. Pack the Harley, Cuban cigars, and head out.
A big upcoming event that would be a perfect time to go to Shangri-La is:
October 9th - 11th AANR-West Fall Festival
Shangri-La Ranch @ New River, Arizona
There will be a Water Volleyball tournament (and if enough participants also a regular hard court Volleyball tournament) as well as many other activities.
It should be a blast!
Just thought I would share what the upcoming fantastic weather report is for the AANR-West Fall Festival at Shangri-La this coming weekend - October 9th - 11.
It should be a great time!
