Though shaving is often discussed, this is a subject I have yet to see come up. But this is not whether to shave the pubic area, oh no, this is a much more insipid problem...

I've had it! I am a HAIR MONSTER! (Don't be afraid, I won't bite...) Once I hit about 30 or so the fuzz on my back began to get longer and thicker. It was a slow progression at first and I hardly noticed. But now that I am into my 40's I have to admit to myself that the hair on my back is every bit as thick as the hair on my chest. And I hate it... I want it gone.

And now on to my question - how to get rid of it? I have used Nair but find it difficult to apply since I am not a contortionist. Currently I am using a razor attached to an extension arm but there's something unnerving about not being able to see what I'm doing and cutting myself. The razor is actually doing a good job of it when done in the shower but has to be repeated nearly every day to keep down the stubble. I've considered doing a hot wax but I really don't want to involve other people in this maintenance effort.

Does anyone know of custom electric razors that have extension arms and are designed for use in the shower? Second to that, how about creams or other products that retard hair growth?

I have to say, since ridding my back of that unwanted hair I feel ten times better. I thank you for any advice you may have for this problem.

Try using a long handled shower brush to reach those "hard to reach" places.
Find one with short, soft bristles.
Don't scrub it in, just spread it out.
Use a mirror to make sure you havn't missed a spot.
I have the same "problem" as you do, with my back hair. I just can't stand it when it is so thick. I use the nair about once a month. I don't mind having a little "short hair" on my back, but when it gets thick I gotta get rid of it.

Mac,
Put away that razor before you cut yourself! How would you put on a bandage back there?

Like you, I am extremely hairy, back and chest. I had a textile girlfriend ask me once why I bothered to wear clothes since I had so much body hair to keep me warm. This was just her way of teasing me. She actually liked me that way.

If you really want the hair on your back gone, go to a salon and spend the $60 to have it waxed.

Since you can't see your back without a mirror, why not ignore it and find friends who don't care how smooth or hairy you are?

If it REALLY bothers you and you wish to live without it. We do live in an age where hair can be permanantly removed. New laser treatments keep improving and good places can be sought through trusted health providers.

I am 31 and I noticed back when I was 25 that the hair started to grow on my back. It really doesn't bother me because I don't often see my back unless I should look in the mirror. I don't think that I will ever remove it probably because I would cut myself up.

I also think that no one else really cares whether my back is hairy or not so I don't either. I try to not have my back turned towards people when I am talking with them. /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I like greensunshine reply and I think there are a lot more women out there with her good taste as I am married to one. Once I turned thirty the hair on the top of my head started falling out and began getting thicker everywhere else. Only once did I shave my chest and back after my yearly physical as they shaved patches on my chest to do the ekg and my teenage sons wanted to see what I would look like, it was to time consuming and itched like crazy so I will always be hairyhomer!

Bearhiker... the razor with the long handle was something I made myself with a dowel rod. The angle wasn't right so I abandoned that idea. But a Google search turned me onto an off the shelf product made for shaving one's back with a regular razor. Check it out at Razorba (http://www.razorba.com/).

To everyone else, I appreciate your comments, I really do. As a nudist I of course understand the concept of body-acceptance. I see the beauty in every body regardless of shape or size. But for the same reason I drag a razor across my face every day, and comb the hair on my head, and work out once in awhile, I want the hair on my back gone. It's not meant to please anyone other than myself. I'm not buying into some magazine's perception of how I should look it's just that I prefer the way I look without that mess on my back.

Love that smooth-back feel!
