What is the oddest/strangest thing you've encountered nude?

For me it happened while camping in Cade's Cove, Tennessee in October of 1981. A bunch of us had pitched our tents far up the side of the mountatin out of the way of the main campground ... it is a "family" campground and being nude in the main area is a bit risky ... and after a day of freehiking we had all gone to bed early.

I woke up about 3am and got out of my tent and went to stoke the fire to a hot whiteblue flame ... you know the small flame that gives off intense heat in all directions not those roaring yellow flames that push the heat straight up ... when I'd done this I laid down by the fire and went to sleep.

Along about 5am or so I roll over and come nose to nose with one of the woodland residents who had been poking around earlier.

So, you can imagine my surprise when we were literally nose to nose, not more than 4 inches apart.
Who was this resident of the woods you say ... it was none other than the little black furry creature with a white stripe down its back I'd seen earlier that evening around the edge of camp ... a good ole American skunk.

Needless to say, I was the most polite and congenial person on the planet at that moment saying hello in a very pleasent tone of voice and asking about the wife and kids and how he thought the day's weather would turn out. He seemed to appreciate the converstion and left our little encounter with a smile (I assume so anyway) and did not leave any odiferous reminders on our meeting.

Later as the group trudged down to the "facilities" of the campground we all knew where my vistor had gone to next and that he was not as pleased with whomever he encounter there!

Panic is NOT a virtue at certain times, eh? http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/laugh.gif

My (late) wife and I, years ago, camped in a tent on the gulf coast of Florida. That evening before sunset, a whole group of skunks came to our tent, obviously begging for food.

We had to get into our tent and zip up the fabric screen door to get away from them, but even then a skunk climbed on the netting of the screen door, looking in at us.

I am told that skunks can be made into pets - after their odor capacity is removed.

But even then they stink! Not like they are renowned for but still unplesant.

A couple in formal, black tie, attire. Oh my gosh I guess I am under dressed!

One hot & muggy July I went tent camping in the northern lower penninsula of Michigan at a textile state forest campground. It was so hot and muggy all day, then it rained as soon as the sun when down and got muggier than it was before. Anyone from Michigan knows what that feels like.

My clothes were soaked with sweat from putting up the tent. I decided to take a shower, so I set up my "bush" shower (a black soft plastic container with a shower head attachment), stripped and had a nice shower. There was only one other tent set up, around a corner, down by the lake. I had set up in the main area, there was room for about 20 cars with tents in the main area of the campground but no one else was there. I was far away from the compost toilets, but about 20 yards from the well. I felt like I had complete privacy so I wasn't too worried about being nude.

After taking my "bush" shower I sat outside and air dried, then went to sleep. About 2 am I was awakened by something scratching at my tent flap. Thinking it might be a bear, I thought to myself, "what would scare away a bear?" "A dog? A coyote? A yelling human?" None of those seemed correct. Then I hit upon the idea of making a very loud roaring sound like a BIG MEAN BEAR. So I ROARED as loud and as mean as I could. Whatever it was left very quickly, so I went back to sleep. A little while later, I was awakened by the same noise, so I roared again. This time I was a little bit more apprehensive about only have a nylon sheet between me and a bear, so I got out of the tent and went to my truck, nude, with my clothes in the tent.

About 30 minutes went by with nothing happening, then a car drove into the campground, the people by the lake were returning from where they had been. I only hoped that they didn't drive up, see me sitting in my truck and decide to introduce themselves. They drove on down to the lake, but now I knew that there was someone else in the campground and that I would need to be cautious.

Suddenly, by the moonlight, I could see something at my tent, trying to get in. I turned on my headlights and saw the biggest raccoon I had ever seen, easily 50 pounds. So that was the critter that was trying to get in. I felt so stupid. So I scared it away and decided that making a small fire would probably keep him/her/them away. I got my fire going, when SURPRISE!

The couple that were camping by the lake walked up to get water at the well, nude. They didn't think anyone was awake at that hour and were as surprised by me as I was by them. They had towels with them and quickly covered up. They said they only did it because they had been out drinking. They got playful on the walk up rom their tent and were "towel snapping" each other.

They were going to the well to get water because it was so muggy that they wanted to wash up before going to bed, so I offered to let them use my bush shower. I explained to them that I was nude because I got scared out my tent by the forest creature and showed them it's tracks in the sand by my tent. I jokingly told them that they didn't have to worry about me seeing them nude, that I wouldn't report them if they didn't report me.

They had a nice shower and sat with me around my fire afterward. They said it was one of the most pleasant times they had ever had while camping. She was somewhat reluctant to be nude at first, but after seeing how enjoyable it was for her husband and me, she liberated herself from the wet towel she had wrapped around her and wrapped her hair up in it instead.

I never mentioned nudism to them, we were just three people enjoying peace and quiet with each other in the forest.

Years ago, when my (late) wife and I were camping in Utah one night, we heard the sound of hooves coming toward our tent and then saw a protrusion on the tent fabric where the animal pushed it's nose deep into the fabric. My wife reached up and gave the protruding nose a slap, and then we heard the hooved animal clomp away. We did not get up to see what hooved animal it was, but it was probably a deer.

Great story Buff Man!

My only contribution isn't that odd I'm afraid.

I used to head out from my home in northern Arizona, venture down a Forest Service road and then do a little free hiking. On one occassion I had been out for over an hour and followed a natural ravine to an open clearing. From there I headed back uphill towards where I tought the road would be, and then I noticed a VW busload of college-age girls stopped and stretching.

We were a ways from the towns at either end of the road so I thought they might be taking a break from driving and wondered what I should do. I did not want to walk up and startle them with my appearance, but I wondered if they stopped because they had seen my bare butt. So I watched them for a few minutes before continuing back up the road in hopes of beating them back to where my car was. Today I would handle that same situation completely differently! At the time this "sighting of textilists" occurred I was more concerned about my ability to continue enjoying the forest nude, and the last thing I wanted was increased Ranger patrols due to a reported "naked man" sighting!

Maybe they would have joined me though.

Oh, but I also wandered into a clearing in the forest filled with a heard of Elk! They did not act surprised by my presence at all, and I was able to watch them for a good while. I had been following the low terrain between hills on my early morning free hike when the forest opened into this clearing. There was dew in the air and the rays of sunlight streaming between the trees made the clearing exceptionally beautiful. I was already feeling great and then had the surprise of encountering the Elk herd.

Maybe it was the absence of rustling clothing or mixed colors (shirt, pants) that allowed me to walk right past them without being regarded as a threat. I will remember that sight forever, and now I hope you will too.

The absence of rustling clothing is my theory as to why I can get closer to wildlife too! I've had similar experiences with wildlife, nothing as big as an Elk though.

Pete, it's not so much theory as fact.
Clothing is unnatural and nature's creatures (with the exception of man) don't take to the unnatural very well.

In my story above had I been clothed I feel certain the skunk would have blasted me as I turned toward him even though I was asleep and no threat to him.
Clothed I would have been perceived as a threat, unclothed I was not and thus able to leave our encounter "unscented".
