I just got back last night from a quick trip to Chicago. On the way up, I had my own sleeper room, and I was looking forward to some nude train time. Well, it started out being not as much fun as I thought.
My train's departure time was 3:16 AM, but my wife dropped me off at the station at about 9:30 PM. So, that meant 5.5 hours of sitting in a cold waiting room (10 or 15 degrees outside) in a formica bucket seat, trying desperately and unsuccessfully to find a comfortable position to nap in.
When my train came, my bed was already made. I stripped, crawled in, and quickly realized it was going to be a cold night. Just a sheet and a thin blanket, and the vent was blowing cool air. So, I looked around for the temperature control, but didn't find it until the next morning. I got about 2 hours of intermittent sleep before it was time to get up for breakfast.
After breakfast and a shower, though, I was able to spend a while nude in my compartment. It's a pretty neat feeling to be sitting nude on a train while the suburbs flash by. I wondered how well people could see inside when I needed to stand up for whatever reason. The only downside is that I like to leave the aisle-side curtains open, and I didn't figure the conductor or other passengers would appreciate that very much.
I then spent the next few hours very much dressed. Downtown Chicago in 10-degree weather requires plenty of layers! And, yes, I slept a HECK of a lot better last night. About 10 hours, I think.

Your need to be naked is obviously greater than mine. I do whatever it takes to sleep comfortably warm. http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/eusa_dance.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/clown.gif http://oakhurstonline.com/icon/bonk.gif
Concerning people seeing in, I wouldn't think that would be an issue unless the train was standing in a station. As long as it's moving, people aren't going to be sure they saw what they thought they saw, if indeed they saw anything all. (How's THAT for a sentence?) And how could they identify the compartment with the naked man? And why would they bother anyway?
Chicago can be cold enough to turn a bass singer into a soprano. I was near Chicago (Great Lakes Naval Training Center) when the wind chill hit -80°.

Sorry, but nude or not, a train ride is simply the worst way to get a good night sleep! And exactly why did your wife leave you in freezing weather for 5.5 hours?

i didn't pack pyjamas, but it was really only my cold feet that kept waking me up. i could have put on my wool socks, but wearing socks to bed wakes me up just as much as the cold. i detest wearing socks to bed.
do you ever have those moments when you have to make a decision, and you know you're going to regret your decision, but you make it anyway? i had one of those before the trip: should i pack a blanket or not? i decided not to, but i had an itch in my brain telling me i would regret not packing it. one of the hardest things to admit is that i know myself better than i think i do.

actually, having been up for 22 hours, the cold was definitely the only thing keeping me up. i'm usually fine sleeping anywhere, through any kind of noise. i had the curtains closed, so the bright lights didn't shine in, which makes a big difference to me.
my wife left me at the station to wait because she worked yesterday; waking up at 3AM, driving me half an hour to a train station, driving back home, then going back to sleep a couple of hours before the alarm goes off.....didn't really appeal to her. she would have done it, i'm sure, but it was my suggestion to just let me wait in the station overnight. i didn't plan on it being so co-o-o-old.
part of what made it so weird rolling through the suburbs is that we were using the same line as one of the commuter trains. so, i had ridden that line many times before, but in a situation where nudity was definitely not a possiblity. i think it would be cool to get a bunch of nudists to book an entire sleeper car, and then not allow other passengers into that car. except for meals, you could then reasonably spend the entire trip nude. i doubt amtrak would be up for that, though.

on the other hand, i believe it's possible to rent a private railcar from somebody and then have amtrak couple it to the train. unless, of course, there is a nudist out there who owns a railcar. doubt it.

You were lucky that the train was on time. The last time I took Amtrak from southern Illinois to Chicago the train was 8 hours late due to flooding in the south. The depot was open so I did not have to sit outside. The wooden benches made quite an impression on my butt however.

When I belonged to reignion of Russian communists, I used a train very much, maybe semimonthly.
There was only two classes of far trains - coupe with a 4 places and open type of coupe(stable) with a 6 places. Door type coupe costed about doublefold and no much more comfort, and my job-giver supported such `comfort` only if all tickets in stables was sold out. Anyhow one spend a 3 or 5 days in this damn train narrowly with dumb strange people (very rarely contrary, with really nice people). And vagon master has a special key to open your doors every time if he thinks its need for sth. Thus, even if I have ticketed all the 4 places there would not be wise to risk.
However travelling mostly at those open stable like coupe I used hundreds of times to sleep naked at nighttime. Just use a highest 2nd or 3rd level beds, jump under blankets and then dress-off under blanket (most women instinctive do this way there, worrying someone may cach a glimpse on their dirty/hole-ful underwear). And morning dress back the same way - all people there do around.
Risk if one can slip off the bed is too tiny even inspite the russian trains never use safety belts (however I have seen it- falling off the 2 meters high- not funny inspite of the reason is too heavy booze due `nothing more interesting to do`. Everyone boozing there.)
Oh those times - travel about 3500 km afar costed only 20 roubles... equal 5 bottles of vodka or 100 bottles of cow milk. Today as an example such money costs just a shortest `far` travel in Sweden by bus from Stockholm to Norrchopping (200 km).

I read a book by a guy who bought a railcar and refurbished it and toured the U.S. with it. RR's will definitely hook a private car on a train if it meets RR standards of inspection and you have the money.
As far as the Pullman coach (sleeper) goes, it is possible to get additional blankets from the porter, or if you need more heat ask him also.

the "city of new orleans" operates 93% on-time, actually. my worst was when i was catching a train from mccook, nebraska, with my daughter. it was scheduled to arrive at about 1 AM, but a blizzard in california had knocked poles down onto the tracks, which caused a freight train to derail, which left my train stuck waiting. fortunately, i called ahead of time: we went to bed, got up the next morning, had breakfast, and had our host drive us to the station before going to work. it came around 9:30 or so. it may seem inconvenient, but it's definitely the most stress-free way of traveling with a toddler; he or she can get up and walk around whenever, there's usually a movie in the sightseer car, there's plenty of legroom for playing with toys, meals are onboard....

i didn't think of that. the risk is small, though: when in bed, i was covered with blankets, and after breakfast i sat on a towel with which i could cover myself. the conductor did knock on the door in the morning; i opened it, and she told me that breakfast would be served soon. as i said, though, that was no big deal because i was under the blankets.

i was in a compartment with only two beds, and nobody else was traveling with me. so, only the lower bunk was made for me. i don't think american trains put strangers in the same compartment, only people traveling together.

i just assumed that there was no climate control in the compartment, that it was just like riding in coach. plus, it was after 3 AM, and i didn't want to go try to find a conductor. i boarded through a different railcar, so i wasn't even sure if a conductor was onboard my particular car anyway.

Kphoger,
Is that the Capital Limited Line? If so, I traveled nude (it was late night) from Washington,DC to Cumberland, MD (en route to Chicago). I was a little concerned about the curtains to the corridor, but all in all it was a pleasurable ride. Definitely NOT the way to go if you have a tight schedule though!

no, it was the "city of new orleans," from new orleans to chicago (i got on in carbondale, illinois).
the only route out east i've taken was the "cardinal," which my dad and i took to charlottesville, virginia, and back. we were bumped up to a sleeper on the way out there, but had coach coming back. also not a good train for tight schedules, in my experience.
