Thanks for being a regular donor. Although your blood type is uncommon (1.5% in the US), it is your "negativity" that makes you special. The negative blood types can be given to the positive blood types, so you can donate to about 14% of the US population.

I'm O+ so I can only donate to other positives. O negatives are the universal donors. Even though they can help everyone, it comes at the cost of only being able to receive from other O negatives (< 7% of the population).

Donated again on July 5th. They like donations over the holidays since the supply gets low.

    Re: Donate Blood?

Started donating in the early 80's when the company I worked for held a blood drive.
At that time the red cross was handing out fliers about platelet donations at there Van Nuys location. I did that regularly for about ten years. Could not keep going due to a change in employment where my work schedule was such that I could not keep my appointments.
Now I donate blood every time my church holds a drive. I will be going again this Sunday.
Like others have posted, if you can give blood, please do so.

It has been a couple of years later. Still donating. Just finished another gallon. Got about 10 co-workers to donate too. Me happy!

    Re: Donate Blood?

I used to give blood (I think it was every 6 months) at the time, can't remember how much I had given but had to stop. The reason I had to stop? I began working for a health authority who perversely would not allow me time out to do it. Then a few years ago became ineligible anyway due to having suffered a DVT clot (caused by an inept doctor who just did not listen to what I told him was happening. As a result of the clot I underwent a course of treatment that involved warfarin (a blood thinner) after having had this the transfusion service will not touch you.

The Red Cross will accept you: See http://www.redcrossblood.org/donatin...criteria-topic

    – Coumadin (warfarin) , heparin or other prescription blood thinners- you should not donate since your blood will not clot normally. If your doctor discontinues your treatment with blood thinners, wait 7 days before returning to donate.

    Re: Donate Blood?

I started giving blood when I was in my 20's and over the years I have given 8 gals. I would be over 10 by now, the blood center was always calling me. Once I gave at the center in Prov and then on my way to look at work [ I was a tree cutter] I drove by Bryant College and they were having a blood drive. Soooo I couldn't resist the baby dolls in their cheerleader uniforms. I gave twice that day and then caught hell from the Blood Center. That was before they had computers and it took a while for them to catch on to what I did, but the cheerleader babes. One time they asked me if I minded if they give my blood to a black baby, I told them only if the black baby had red blood. I told them that it shouldn't matter who gets the blood, it's blod and if someone needs it then give it to them. I haven't given blood in over 4 years because of my meds plus back when I was an over ther road driver I missed about 15 yrs of donating..

LOL. You couldn't donate twice now-a-days. They check the inside of your arms and would notice the previous puncture mark.
