How do you feel about the Male genitals being referred to as junk?

I am male. I am married and the father of six children.

I am proud of my genitals. I don't consider my penis, testes, and scrotum as junk. They enable my wife and I to enjoy a vigorous sex life and participated in the creation of six wonderful human beings.

However, I keep seeing and hearing male genitals referred to as junk.

Do you think male genitals should be referred to as junk?

    Walter

It's just a term used cause people are embarrassed to use the proper terms like scrotum and penis.

What is embarrassing about saying scrotum or penis?

One could just use the word genitals. It is more generic but not negative.

Aren't you over-reacting? No one is implying that the male genitals are indeed junk. For some unknown reason, many people don't like to use the proper terms. How often do you hear penis or vagina on TV?

But it's still specific. "Junk" is sufficiently abstract that the real meaning can only be determined by context; the same as when people call it "the plumbing".

Society - at least most of American society - is extremely squeamish about referring to sexual anatomy directly, especially in clinical terms. The more abstracted the word, the less squeamish they get.

The theologians call it a sinner and try to reform it. The governor calls it a criminal and tries to punish it. The psychologist calls it a neurotic and tries to cure it. Still, the Damned Thing will not fit into their slots."

You don't have "Don't care and not worth discussing" as a choice.

    I think it's totally irrelevant.

I am the one who used the word "junk" in another thread, where you objected to the term. Now, we have this thread from you. I have to ask, Walter, why the issue?

Language is fluid. The meanings of words change over the years, and you are well aware if it. Let's not pretend to be obtuse.

If the definition of your "genitals" is the biggest problem you have in life, consider yourself truly blessed. I envy you.

    Drama, much?

Aren't the first 3 choices the same??

    1. I think it is perfectly okay to refer to the male genitals as junk
    2. I think it is acceptable to refer to the male genitals as junk
    3. It does not matter whether or not the male genitals are referred to as junk

If you think it does not matter if junk is used (#3), doesn't this mean when the term "junk" is used that you accept its use (#2)? And aren't "acceptable" (#2) and "perfectly okay" (#1) the same thing?

Re: How do you feel about the Male genitals being referred to as junk?

Walter: It seems to me that "junk" is a loose synonym for "stuff" in other contexts and has come to be used in this context also. It probably isn't used in the sense that you and I think of "junk" being something useless or worn-out. As Home Nudest says, language is fluid and words get new meanings and outgrow old ones. It's just old fogies, geezers, folks like me who have problems when a word is used in a way that we don't think is right, because it didn't used to be a right use of it.

But, I"m with you Walter, that I will never call my genitals, penis, testes and scrotum "junk." I also will never call my wife, "my old lady." The terms may be used innocently enough, lovingly, even, but just because they also carry the other meaning, it becomes a bit of a put-down, gives a negative feel to the object being referred to.

OMG do we really have to discuss this? This ranks up there with the silly discussions on circumcision and pubic hair. Who cares! Call it what you want, I have more important problems to worry about.
