Thread: I thought I had a good thing going, but we have encountered a speed bump

Unhappy I thought I had a good thing going, but we have encountered a speed bump

We live in a semi-rural subdivision, where all of the residents have 2 acres or more. There are houses fairly distant on all sides, but on the south and southeast are houses that are much closer, thus making any outdoor activity involving nudity much more exposed and obvious.
For years, I have been skulking around in the garage, where I have a workbench and do any little repairs and odd jobs necessary. This garage faces the carport of the family to the south, and they have no trouble looking in and seeing whatever, or whoever is doing what.
About two weeks ago, I was on the lawn tractor doing the mowing, while the woman next door (mid-forties, divorced) was pushing a powered mower. We both stopped at the fence to make small talk.
In the midst of the conversation, I threw in the comment that as hot as it was, I would mow the lawn naked if I thought the neighbors were okay with that. Without pausing a beat she said, "go ahead and do it. It won't bother me, and I might even enjoy knowing you have the freedom to do so."
I also explained about the garage, and her reply was "same thing there. If you are moving sprinklers or washing the car, naked is fine."
That very same day, she was out watering some plants when I walked out of the garage wearing nothing but my wedding ring. She smiled and gave me a wave, and went back to her watering. I washed my pickup in the grass between our houses.
There was even one trip over to the chain link fence by me to ask her some sort of question, and there was no embarrassment shown by either party.
While it may seem we have reached a happy ending, alas, not so fast. In the meantime, both of her grown (early twenties and unemployed) kids have moved back in with her. They seem to have no life at all, and are home almost all the time, along with half a herd of young adults who are typically outside a great deal.
That would seem to be the end of my new found freedom, at least until the gods smile on me and one or both of the kids find a job.

Ask her if her kids would be okay about your nudity. Afterall, it's her place, not theirs. You already have the okay when she is there, so I would think it would be okay if they were too. Her answer might surprise you, hopefully. Good luck.

I wouldn't wait, sometimes "freeloaders" never find what the're looking for. Have a talk with her and see what happens!

Maybe your nudity would offend her kids and they would move out. This might what she wants and she just might be very grateful to you. Having a group of unemployed 20 somethings with nothing but time on their hands can lead to all sorts of friction around the home. It won't take long before she wants her freedom (and house) back.

I wouldn't be so hard on the kids. Today's economy is not the same as when you and I were the same age. It's become difficult to find anything without experience.
That being said, a semi-rural location is definitely not the best choice for finding work either.

As NudeM said, I would ask her if nudity would be an issue with her kids at home. It's her property, not theirs; so they technically shouldn't get a say-so. They can stay inside and apply for jobs online if being outside and seeing some nudity bothers them.

I agree, you need to address this with your neighbor...it is her home after all and she should be the one that sets the rules for her children to live by. I have a pretty private back yard and take advantage of it even though i have never mentioned anything to my neighbors. There is only one known instance where a neighbor "caught" but he never said a word to me about it. I did take immediate steps to seal off the view however. I recommend you take quick action with your neighbor and confirm her continued support to ensure you all remain neighborly.
Life starts now, so start living! So why not live nude?

I agree. mrs lurk and I are rather fortunate in that respect; our daughter was raised in a major metro area (Boston), finished college, went into the military and then eventually got her (second) master's - is now very gainfully employed as a physician assistant.

But I have friends who have adult children in their 30s living with them. It not only hampers what they do in their personal lives, but financially -- you can't salt money away for retirement, you also can't stand up to an employer who wants to withhold your raise, etc., if they know you're still supporting your children when you're in your late 50s / early 60s.

I agree with those who suggest talking with her. Next time she's out, ask about her kids and ask again if it is still OK now that her kids are back home. Wish you luck.

I don't see this as a "my house, my rules" situation.

The one thing everyone is forgetting is the law.

Mrs. Homeowner-Neighbor doesn't make the law. She may be fine with public nudity, but if her adult children (or even minor children) objected, it might get nasty for Mr. Nudist.

    Just a thought.....

It surprises me that everyone only suggests talking to the mother - why not talk directly to the children, they are grown-up people and responsible for what they say or do.
