Woman gets permmission to swim toppless in public pool

This woman recently had surgery to remove a cancerous lump on her breast and so she found uncomfortable to wear a bathing suit while swimming.
So, she asked and was granted permission to swim topless.

The Parks department spokesperson said "We're trying to protect children". From what?

Somehow, it seems worse to me, that they would allow only one specific woman than none at all. But also that sounds like the first crack in the dam, and a good lawyer should be able to get the policy opened to all women, scares or not, soon.

She had a double mastectomy and chose not to have reconstructive surgery, so there were no breasts. After going thru all the trouble to get permission, she chose not to swim at the pool.

Protect them from their parents after asking why that lady was different. Too many parents would be embarrassed to answer with the truth. Others would skirt the subject all together. My dad was wounded in WWII and his scars were always a curiosity, but he never failed to explain how he got them to a child, and the kid always understood.

When I was staying a Bélézy a few years ago, I notice a lady aged around 80 years with a dark overall tan and I then realised that she had no nipples, as the result of a double mastectomy. She would stand around quite unselfconsciously chatting to others and I really admired the way she had not let such a traumatic event affect how she lived her life.

    Problem solved, then.

IMO, they were right to query her using the pool topless - the pool presumably has a dress code to uphold - and, in the particular circumstances, the management were right to make an exception for this lady. Everyone is happy.

I do wonder if this lady really did want to swim, though, or was she just making a point. I hope not.

If their 'dress code' normally requires women to have bathing tops on, then the men in the pool should be required to wear them too.

Needless to say, Mark, I can not agree with that point.

Swimwear only has one purpose, namely to conceal parts of the anatomy which society considers intimate - otherwise they would be unnecessary and all public swimming would be nude. What is, and is not, perceived as intimate is culturally determined and, in modern western culture, men's chests are not deemed intimate while women's breasts are.
