    Naked Rambler arrested

    From H Gregg
    Wednesday, 24 October 2012

I see on Hebweb that the 'naked rambler' has been arrested in Hebden Bridge.

He's obviously passionate about his mission to walk naked from Lands End to John o' Groats, and I see nothing wrong with what he's doing. Any objections must surely be based on prudery.

It might be a good idea to offer him support from the town, I suspect he has received little elsewhere.

I suggest that a fitting gesture would be for a few hundred people get naked on and around the Old Bridge, have a photo taken and pass it to the national press. Do we really think the police could arrest us all? (yes I include myself).

If there are not enough takers for doing this on public land – maybe the town hall outdoor area would be a good place for the shot.

    Any thoughts?

Being politically correct can be just as offensive if not more so than being honest in presenting your opinion. Saying nothing suggests that you agree unless body language says differently. That's rather hard to see in a forum such as this. That lack of body language also makes it easier to misunderstand what has been written.

Stu, Is there any way to find out more specific information as to who lodged the complaint against the rambler, why the complaint was lodged (was it ONLY the sight of a naker man walking through town?), and if the rambler did anything deliberately to encourage this complaint other than walking randomly through this community?
Sanslines, the latest news dribbling in should answer your request to Stu2630:

    Naked Rambler latest

    Thursday, 25 October 2012

Halifax Courier reports Stephen Gough wasreleased on bail this lunchtime, pending further inquiries.
"On his release, he walked out of the police station naked.

He was then spotted walking through Halifax town centre early this afternoon before being stopped by police on Bull Green at around 2pm.

He was arrested again, this time on suspicion of a public order act."

The Scotsman reports, 'A spokesman for West Yorkshire police said: "A man was arrested walking naked in Hebden Bridge on suspicion of causing a breach of the peace shortly after midday. He is being held at Hedben Bridge police station." ' (Thursday, 25 October 2012)

The Scottish Sun report that police were amused. "The officer was laughing when he said they’d received a 999 call." (Thursday, 25 October 2012)

See HebWeb Forum thread: "I suggest that a fitting gesture would be for a few hundred people get naked on and around the Old Bridge, have a photo taken and pass it to the national press."

    Mail online - (Thursday, 25 October 2012)

Guardian Northerner uses HebWeb coverage of the Naked Rambler. Northern correspondent of the Guardian, Martin Wainwright writes, "Witness current comments on the community website, the Hebweb, which is one of the best of its kind in the country. No, world." (25 Oct)

Naked Rambler arrested in Hebden Bridge

    24 October 2012

We don't know many details yet but we have just been contacted by the spokesman for Stephen Gough, George Cavanagh who has told the HebWeb that Stephen Gough has been arrested in Hebden Bridge, following complaints to the police.

We understand that Stephen's routine is to continue from where he was last stopped when he is next free to do so.

The Book Case tweeted that he was walking into Hebden Bridge from Keighley Road and "They can't arrest the naked rambler in Hebden Bridge!". Another tweet read, "There's a naked man walking around Hebden. Why does this not surprise me?"

    Naked Rambler approaches Hebden Bridge

    Tuesday, 23 October 2012

The Naked Rambler, Stephen Gough is heading south on the Pennine Way today and should be passing to the west of Hebden Bridge this afternoon.

It is understood that he may drop into the town centre near the old pack horse bridge.

Spokesman for Stephen Gough, George Cavanagh told the HebWeb that he is travelling without a map and it would be much appreciated if someone from the town was able to meet and greet him and point him in the right direction south.

Stephen Gough has spent much of the last six years in prison in Scotland after making it his mission to walk from Land's End to John O'Groats wearing nothing but hiking boots and a rucksack.

The BBC reported earlier this month, "Stephen Gough has 18 convictions and has been in prison almost without a break since May 2006," for refusing to put on clothes.

"In England, Gough had run-ins with the police, but the attitude in Scotland has consistently been tougher with police and courts mostly agreeing that being naked in public is fundamentally a breach of the peace.

"Gough's attitude has also hardened, with the rambler refusing to wear clothes in court or after being arrested, leading to contempt of court convictions."

Agreed but we are drowning in political correctness in the USA. No one can say much of anything about anyone for fear of offending some group. When we lose the basic ability for open communication, we lose the ability to solve problems or do anything and this is one big reason why we prevent ourselves from promoting change in the USA. We claim that everyone should speak out and be heard for to prevent this is censorship but then we actually prevent people from speaknig out under the guise of political correctness.

I really am curious as to just who are these people who are lodging complaints about the rambler. Perhaps the problem with nudity is not with the rambler but with the people who lodge the complaints. Perhaps the rambler brings out in the open all of the prejudices, fears, hatreds, of people who on the surface would claim to be anything but.

The rambler is not living in these towns - he is just quickly passing through one time and most people would never even notice that he passed through if all people would not make him into a national spectacle.

He appears to be actively avoiding the towns. Hebden Bridge is a very small place (my sister and her husband used to live just outside it) and it has a bit of a Bohemian reputation, which is perhaps why Gough chose to enter it. Reports suggest he is using the Pennone Way, which is a footpath over the mountain "spine" of England and, espcially this time of year, he is unlikely to encounter many people.

He might start having problems again when he gets south of the Pennine/Peak District areas and enters the more populated Midlands, where it is harder to avoid people.

I really am curious as to just who are these people who are lodging complaints about the rambler.
People like me. I would complain about him. I don't consider his behaviour to be acceptable and the more harassment he gets, the better signal it sends to other arrogant exhibitionists.

The latest Naked Rambler News Sunday Morning October 28th, 2012

Stephen Gough - the naked rambler leaves Halifax Police Station after being arrested in Hebden Bridge.

UPDATE: Naked supporters rally in Hebden

Stephen Gough - the naked rambler leaves Halifax Police Station after being arrested in Hebden Bridge.

    Published on Sunday 28 October 2012 11:56

MORE than a dozen brave souls stripped down to their bare essentials in Hebden Bridge this morning.

They wanted to show their support for the naked rambler who was arrested in the town last week.

Apart from a few bemused market stall holders and early morning shoppers, today’s mass unrobing on the historic packhorse bridge did little to raise eyebrows.

But according to the organisers it was hugely successful in drawing attention to the plight of rambler Stephen Gough, 53, who appeared before Calderdale Magistrates last week for a public order offence.

The former marine from Hampshire is understood to have walked 220 miles on his way from Scotland to Southampton.

His trial has been put off until February 5 and many of those on the bridge today felt he had been treated unfairly.

Heidi Bang Tidy, a burlesque dancer, who lives in Cragg Vale, said there was nothing wrong with people taking their clothes off.

“We wanted to show that Hebden Bridge is an accepting community rather than a place where people are arrested for doing something which is perfectly natural,” she said.

A part-time nudist, Augustus Jones, travelled all the way from Rugby to join the rally.

“I take my clothes off in the house and around the garden. People should realise that nudity is just another way of dressing,” he said.

Paul Maddock, on a visit from Todmorden, said he couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

Other recent UK West Yorkshire recent nudes in the news

Calendar boys strip off for the cause...

    Published on Thursday 4 October 2012 11:44

FIRE FIGHTERS in the upper Calder Valley have taken their kit off all in the name of charity.
Luke Cannon and Andrew Ball, who are based at Mytholmroyd, are “Mr July” and “Mr October” in West Yorkshire Fire Service’s Red Hot Dates calendar.

Pictures for the calendar were shot at various locations in the region and all proceeds will go to The Fire Fighters Charity (TFFC), the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Laila Milly’s Wish.

Andrew, who is Mytholmroyd Fire Station’s representative for TFFC, said: “A lot of hard work has gone into organising the calendar to get it put together, produced and printed.

“The first task was finding sponsors and fundraising to cover the printing costs, then it was a case of getting the calendar ideas together and compiling them.

“The effort will now all be about selling the 5,000 plus copies that have been printed over the next few months, up until the end of the year. Hopefully we can be successful in achieving the target of £25,000 and the profits go to three great causes.”

The calendars are priced at £5 and will be available from the fire station on Burnley Road, Mytholmroyd Community Centre and local businesses supporting the campaign.

Between 2004 and 2007, the calendar raised over £60,000 for various charities.

The calendar boys will be making personal appearances. To find out when and where follow@RedHotDates on Twitter or visit: www.facebook.com/pages/Red-Hot-Dates-2013/456699244362400.

MORE than a dozen brave souls stripped down to their bare essentials in Hebden Bridge this morning.
More than a dozen, eh? Bearing in mind that Hebden Bridge is less than an hour's drive from several huge cities including Manchester and Leeds, and one supporter, a "part-time nudist", traipsed all the way from Rugby (a two and a half hour drive!) , it is hardly a ringing endorsement of public support for Mr Gough.

    I love this bit:

Heidi Bang Tidy, a burlesque dancer, who lives in Cragg Vale, said there was nothing wrong with people taking their clothes off.
So she's obviously a typical rustic Yorkshirewoman then! Hilarious!

He does have some supporters and well-wishers, but I think it is also obvious, including from the comments and their respective ratings, but I don't believe he commands much respect or sympathy from the majority of ordinary people.

Mr Gough is becoming viewed at an irritating and, sometimes, offensive nutcase, and those nudists in the UK who align themselves with his mission are doing the public perception of nudism no favours.

The "Calendar boys" from the fire station will be following a pattern in which titillating pictures of nudity from discreet and unrevealing poses are sold on the basis that they are mildly erotic. This is the sexualisation of nudity, which I thought nudism was against.

Well of course you would complain about him but there are many different people with many different reasons for complaining about the rambler. Some people will certainly have an axe to grind and they will take any and every opportunity to abuse someone else with the law. If Gough was in the USA, a good defense attorney would espose the motivations behind the person(s) lodging the complaint and expose the real truth as to why some people who never even come in cotact with the rambler go ballistic over hearing that a naked man is rambling along. Some will stop at nothing to complain and complain. Given that at least one person will complain about at least one thing in life, the police should be bombarded with complaints about everything. The police will then have to justify why they enfore the breach of peace law against Gough and ignore all of the other breach of peace complaints.

The rambler needs an escort of calender boys during his ramblings.
