    Space Shuttle in LA

I went out for a freehike this morning in the hills behind Olive Dell hoping to catch a glimpse of the space shuttle Endeavour being delivered to LA. I figured that this would be a longshot considering how far from the published list of flyovers Olive Dell is located. The nearest choice for me that would provide a definite viewing was Disneyland, but they would frown upon my freehiking attire. I hiked up to the top of one of the highest hills behind he resort. From this point you can see from the San Gabriel Valley all the way to Palm Springs. Two of the published flyovers were JPL and Griffith Park, so I was hoping they would loop to the east in between. I hung out up there for 30 to 40 minutes and watched dozens of planes on their approach to Ontario, Los Angeles and Orange County airports. No luck seeing the shuttle though.

On the way back down I surprised a group of four wild burros and followed them down the hill as they trotted ahead. The weather was a perfect 90 degrees and crystal clear. Despite striking out on seeing the shuttle, it was a great naked morning in the sun and breeze.

Did anyone in So Cal get to view the shuttle au natural?

I watched the shuttle flyby from the patio of a restaurant in Orange. Pretty cool to see but my Girlfriend works at LAX so she got to see a couple of low altitude flybys plus the final landing. Unfortunately we were both dressed...

I like to call these "F*ck Yeah America!!" moments...

When the shuttle program flew out of Cape Canaveral, you could get a close-up view of the launch from Playalinda Beach. Night launches could be seen, quite easily, from Cypress Cove.

And, we did see the shuttle being returned to the Cape once -- while we were at Cypress Cove -- as it rode piggyback on a jumbojet.

    Re: Space Shuttle in LA

Hello hikenaked. Unfortunately, the space shuttle was not available for viewing in our immediate area. You had to have been in the L.A. or Long Beach area to geta glimpse of the Space Shuttle Endeavor on its final flight. I was working that day and had the radio on. One station,KNX-1070 AM, was giving extensive coverage live as it happened. They had people posted at different locations like the Queen Mary,Disneyland,The Hollywood sign, and Griffith Park as well as the observatory. They all got an excellent view of it. I wanted to see it so bad, but I couldn't get off work. Otherwise, I would have been there camera and all because it will never take to the skies again! But there are videos of it on www.youtube.com. From what I saw, it was simply awesome! Like I said, I wish I could have seen it.
