I recently ran into a couple of articles from the 1970's to Dear Abby. in both cases a woman asked about her son wanting to skinny dip in a neighbors pool and with cousins. In both cases the neighbors and cousin's families required the boys in their families to swim nude while the girls (who swam along with them) wore swim suits. The reasons given were it was proper for boys to swim nude; boys should not keep secrets from their sisters and girls are more private. In both instances Abby agreed and said it was fine since these were the accepted rules for the boys to swim in both situations and it gave the girls an opportunity to see what other boy's besides their brothers, looked like.

Although I was pleased and agree with Abby's response i think it would be very different today.

What are your thoughts? Also, did any of you have similar situations growing up or even now; where boys are required/encouraged/accepted to swim nude in mixed company while other family members wore swim suits?

Never had a pool nor access to a private pool so cannot respond to that.

But I thought Abby's response was interesting when she said it gives "the girls an opportunity to see what other boy's, besides their brothers, looked like." This also implies that sisters seeing their brothers is very normal!

In the 1970s it seems there were some people, at least, who were not so uptight about nudism and even understood clearly why nudists want to be nude. Different story these days, unfortunately. But even back in the 60s and 70s when it seemed like some folks didn't put up much of a fuss about family members choosing to be casually nude, there still were alot of folk who would take offense to even the notion of someone wanting to go nude for anything. The folks in the article to Abby back then were among the select few who were lucky enough that Abby chose to be on their side in that issue. Even back in those decades, folks who were offended by even the notion of nudism responded with aggressive, disciplinary action against those who offended them, which usually involved either threats, physical violence or a call to the police. It was handled alot more wildly back in those days, whereas these days there are so many new methods Law enforcement can use to take down nudists who offend them and don't forget, this day & age there are cameras literally anywhere and everywhere, even in the sky so it's real easy for anyone with ill intentions to create serious trouble for those of us who merely wishe to enjoy a few moments of being au-naturel in an area where it would be highly unlikely no one else would otherwise be offended.

But I kinda disagree with the notion that only boys would be allowed to swim nude, as it would be unfair for the girls who would otherwise have no problem being nude as well, amongst the boys. I don't believe either gender deserves more privacy than the other, Instead I believe that both genders deserve equal amounts of privacy, regardless. It's only fair.

That's an attitude that was fairly typical in the US up through the 50s. I never heard of mixed nude swimming, but in high school boys were required to swim nude and the girls were required to wear school issued tank suits. Of course sexes were always segregated. The understanding was that girls needed more privacy, which is why the girls locker room had private cubicles, while everything was open in the boys lockers.

I doubt the thinking had anything to do with the 'sluts' label. It probably had more to do with mensis and the 'power' of womanhood.

Nah...it goes back to the dualistic notion that "boys are rough so it's ok for them play naked", but "girls are pretty and have to be ladylike so they have to hide their peepee."
That mentality is still alive today.

That's the truth. Even women that are supposed to naked in a sauna wear towls around them. That's defeating the purpose of a nude sauna. It's probably not
that way in other countries though. But I don't know.

Here is another theory;
The girls probably know that most boys would love to stick it in the girls vagina, but they probably do not want to get pregnant, so obey what they are taught by their parents and culture, knowing the long term consequence of pregnancy, and thus are careful about exposing their genitalia (and breasts) which may all-the-more arouse boys.
