    A little bit arrogant?

A writer to Ask Amy was upset that her In-laws in Switzerland wouldn't abide by her American cultural standards, and asked for advice on how to make them toe the line. http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_2...e=most_emailed

It's no wonder that Americans have a reputation for being condescending and arrogant.

I could understand if American in Switzerland preferred that the bathroom door be closed while someone is in there 'doing their business' if the main reason for keeping the door closed was to prevent the smells from wafting throughout the rest of the house, but instead her concerns seemed to be more about seeing and being seen. On the otherhand and since her Swiss in-laws were in her home they should've been respectful of her wishes to simply close the door.

Though the "open door policy" may not be "proper" here, just let her in-laws alone and not make "a mountain out of a mole-hill", as the situation is not that important to make a fuss about it.

True, I agree that her in-laws when visiting her home should respect her 'rules,' but it appeared to me that she wanted her in-laws to abide by her rules when she was in their home. That would be like a non-vegetarian demanding that vegetarians forgo their beliefs while non-vegetarians are visiting.

I don't think the woman is being arrogant at all, and I didn't get the impression that she expects to change her in-laws in their home. She was merely expressing her discomfort with the situation.

Her modestly while showering (her right and choice) is a separate issue from the "open door policy."

As a nudist, you seem to be taking the in-laws' "side."

When in each other's homes, people should observe the rules of the house, plain and simple. That doesn't mean that if you are in a nudist home that your modesty should be forbidden. The "open door policy" should be optional. Common sense.

I don't see the problem. I think the woman was just venting.

    Re: A little bit arrogant?

I have been to Switzerland many many times. I stayed in cities, suburbs, and in the country, with friends, relatives and friends of relatives, as well as relatives of friends. I have never ever heard of an open door policy. It must just be the individuals policy. Their house their rules. I certainly would not want to see anyone doing paper work after conducting business, nor would I want anyone to see me. I would just avoid the area if anyone goes to their toilet, and close the door when I use it. In my house I would tell them that the door is to be closed. If they don't abide by my rules, they will not be invited again. No matter who they are.

The constant scrolling ads on that website and half of the page trying to sell something reminded me of watching Chinese TV.
