Skinny dip record attempt slammed as 'indecent'

An attempt at breaking a world-record for skinny dipping planned for Mount Maunganui is being labelled unacceptable and indecent.
The idea was raised by The Edge radio station after listeners voted the nudie run at the Bay of Plenty beach would be the best way to herald the start of summer.
Marketing manager Emily Hancox said the skinny dip world record attempt would, hopefully, be held on December 1 "as a bit of fun".
"It's not for people to be shy or embarrassed. If people can see the fun in it and try to get New Zealand on the map for that [world record], it will be great," she said.
However, national director of Family First NZ Bob McCoskrie said holding the event in such a public place would be "completely unacceptable".
"Show some decency and have respect for families that are going to be there, especially at the beginning of the peak summer season," he said.
"If they want to do that and can do it in a discreet way then well and good, but when they are doing it in such a public place it's inconsiderate and unacceptable.

"When it's full nudity like they are proposing it's highly offensive."
The world record for a collective skinny dip was set by 413 people in the United Kingdom last year.
Ms Hancox said she hoped there would be more at Mount Maunganui and suggested bringing bus loads of people from Auckland and Hamilton to take part.
"It's just an opportunity to be proud of your body and who you are and it's a fun opportunity to do something different that probably most of us won't have done in our lives." A Tauranga City Council spokeswoman said The Edge had made an initial approach but an event plan had yet to be lodged.
Event planners needed to book space on the beach with the council to ensure they did not clash with other planned events, the spokeswoman said.
An event plan typically covered parking and access, toilets, safety, whether amplified sound was required, any environmental effects and compliance of food or alcohol requirements.
A skinny dip event was also expected to take place in Christchurch on the same day.
Earlier this year, Papamoa resident Shaun Gallagher called in police to help his neighbourhood deal with unsavoury nudist behaviour on their stretch of beach.
While Mr Gallagher still held concerns about nudists in his neighbourhood sand dunes, he had no problem with the group skinny dip.
"If people are brave enough doing that, fine. Good luck to them all," he said.
"It doesn't appear to be devious or unsavoury. It's definitely in a different category."
Mr Gallagher said his concerns lay with nudists parading in front of children or on a remote beach where others felt victimised.
Mount Maunganui co-ordinator for Neighbourhood Support Reverend Marie Gilpin said it was not illegal to be nude but if people were offended they could call the police.
"I think it's personal responsibility," Reverend Gilpin said.
"If people know it's going to be on and if they don't like it, they can stay away."
People would only have themselves to blame if they went to have a look and complained afterward, Reverend Gilpin said.

Nudist event causes stir in Papamoa

    Poll - January 27 2012- 2128 Votes
Should it be illegal to be naked on a beach in New Zealand?

This poll ended on 09 February 2012.

    Yes

    36% No

63% This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

A controversial nudist event which last year sparked a heated meeting of concerned residents is set to go ahead at Papamoa again on Saturday.

About 40 nude people will gather on the beach at the end of Sunbrae Grove about 11am - infuriating local resident Ben De Kleynen.

While nudists have been common along the stretch of beach since Mr De Kleynen moved to Sunbrae Grove in 1984, he said last January was the first time he had seen an organised event there.

"It should not happen, it is so close to our street it's about 100 metres from our house. If they want to have their nudist event in the bush that's fine. It is awful, absolutely awful," he said.

Following last year's event, Mr De Kleynen said residents were offended by signs put up either side of the 250m stretch of beach the naturists were occupying, warning the public of the event.

"I called the police last year and the police said we can do nothing about it unless they start behaving offensively. I think it's offensive behaviour if you have all these nudist people walking there. The whole street is against it, that's for sure," he said.

Naturist Glenne Findon said the event, supported by Free Beaches NZ, was held annually at different locations across the country.

"We just make a day when we all go down to the beach and just go swimming and fishing and socialise. Last year we had about 40 and this year I would say we're going to easily get that, it's quite popular. All ages, families are welcome, in fact it's a family event really. We hope that if the public walk past they come and join us or talk to us.

"All we want to do is go to the beach and have a nice day there without any clothes," she said.

Ms Findon, who has been a naturist since the 1970s, said groups of up to 200 naturists including families used to enjoy the stretch of beach at the end of Sunbrae Grove, but in recent years the lewd behaviour of a minority had put them off.

"They're exhibitionists and they're breaking the law," she said.

More young people were joining Bay of Plenty Naturists, which has about 460 members, with an increasing number of "empty-nesters" and couples in their 30s and 40s coming along, Ms Findon said. Ms Findon said she felt no need to notify Tauranga City Council or the police about the event.

"It's not actually illegal to be naked on a beach in New Zealand."

Retired church minister and Mount Maunganui Neighbourhood Support co-ordinator Marie Gilpin said there were established residents in the area who were fed up with beach nudity.

"When it first became that [a nudist beach], it wasn't a built-up area and, of course, now it is, and a lot of people in that area are grandparents and they feel as though they can't go to certain parts of the beach because they don't want their children or grandchildren to experience that."

Mrs Gilpin said some of the residents found beach nudity offensive. "Other people say 'oh, get over it' and that's just a personal point of view but you can't run naked around a rugby field, so it's an interesting conversation really."

Papamoa police Sergeant Phil Gillbanks said police would respond to any complaints of disorderly, offensive or anti-social behaviour from the public and would take the appropriate action depending on the circumstances of the offence.

"All we ask is that all beach users consider every individual's views, beliefs, rights and opinions."

    'Dirty' nudists beach ban urged

    By Michele McPherson | Saturday, January 28, 2012 8:02

Family First NZ is calling on the Tauranga City Council to pass a bylaw outlawing public nudity on the coastline.

Family First NZ is calling on the Tauranga City Council to pass a bylaw outlawing public nudity on the coastline.

The call comes in response to Papamoa residents' concerns over a Bay of Plenty Naturists' event set to attract about 40 nude people to Papamoa Beach today.

National director of Family First NZ Bob McCoskrie said families were concerned they may be confronted by nudity in a public place.

"Freedom of expression must never be at the expense of the right to protect children and families from offensive and inappropriate behaviour," Mr McCoskrie said.

"We would not allow nudists to expose themselves in shopping centres or outside schools. Doing it on the beach where there are families is no different."

The Kapiti Coast District Council had passed a bylaw in 2009 containing a clause that stated "no person shall remain upon any part of the beach in deliberate view of others in such a state of undress as to cause offence". He urged the Tauranga City Council to do the same.

"Families don't want their children being confronted by naked men and women. The rights of nudists to 'hang loose' should not be at the expense of families feeling embarrassed or offended. It is completely inappropriate for children to be confronted with naked adults wandering past them or sunbathing. It is not for families to 'get out of the way'. The nudists should simply cover up."

Sunbrae Grove resident Shaun Gallagher said he was forced to check the stretch of beach near his home before allowing his young granddaughters to play on the sand, and elderly women in the street refused to walk along the beach.

"This is no longer a desert. It's a big, big family community. I think if they were genuine they would go and find somewhere that was as remote as it used to be," Mr Gallagher said.

He felt the nudists were holding residents to ransom.

"These are dirty exhibitionists and I can't think of a kinder way of explaining what I think they are."

He questioned whether police would arrest nudists on Mount Maunganui Main Beach.

The nudist event is held annually at beaches around the country and naturist Glenne Findon said it was a popular day for members.

"All we want to do is go to the beach and have a nice day there without any clothes," she said.
