So what can we....as responsible, law-abiding, logical and reasonable members of the community, do to prevent anything like this from ever happening again???
This is a sad situation,on one hand here is a relative in a country area taking an oppertunity to shoot a skunk before it gets to the house, for those of you who have never seen or smelled one ,you dont try an sneakup on one to shoot it. Bad judgement here yes. The other side of the story is the parents,a young kid needs to be escorted at nite ,,costume or not ,an at least a flashlite. Extreme danger here from traffic or human creeps that are out there every day not just on a costume nite.. Blame here goes to both sides of this family, dumb here goes to both sides of the family,i am sorry for the child=== the results could been fatal an devistating to there entire family. Nakenone
What utter nonsense. Talk about false equivalencies! Perhaps 1% blame goes to the family ... maybe, but 99% goes to the person wielding the firearm - who are always supposed to be in control, fully aware, and dead certain about what they are doing. Yes, it was an accident, there were only good intentions, but the responsibility is absolutely clear.

It doesn't say where the party was taking place relative to the position of the girl and the shotgun-wielding idiot. Was this guy firing a shotgun in the same yard as a party? with other kids around? You mean there are kids bobbing for apples in the kitchen and this guy is firing his shotgun off the back deck? Sober? And she was "over the crest of a hill?"A Halloween party became a horror story Saturday night when a 9-year-old girl was shot, after a relative accidentally mistook her for a skunk, WPXI reported. At about 8:30 p.m., a male family member shot at the young girl, who was sporting a black costume that included a black hat with a white tassel, thinking it was a skunk. The unnamed man allegedly saw movement over the crest of a hill at the home in New Sewickley Township, Pa. — located in Beaver County about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh — and fired his gun.

I don't believe this event took place as described. This story is full of holes (a pun!).
I think the problem here is both poor writing and misuse (or actually dis-use) of handcuffs. I expect anyone discharging a firearm into the dark with children around gets carted away to explain himself in front of a judge.
A little test....
Are you a Democrat, a Republican, or a Redneck?
Here is a little test that will help you decide.
You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, an Islamic terrorist with a huge knife comes around the corner, locks eyes with you, screams obscenities, praises Allah, raises the knife, and charges at you.
You are carrying a Glock cal 40, and you are an expert shot. You
have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family.
What do you do?

Democrat's Answer
Well, that's not enough information to answer the question!
Does the man look poor, or oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to him that would inspire him to attack?
Could we run away?
What does my wife think? What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand?
What does the law say about this situation?
Does the Glock have appropriate safety built into it?
Why am I carrying a loaded gun anyway, and what kind of message does this send to society and to my children?
Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me?
Does he definitely want to kill me, or would he be content just to wound me?
If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? Should I call 9-1-1? Why is this street so deserted? We need to raise taxes, have a paint and weed day and make this a happier, healthier street that would discourage such behavior.
This is all so confusing! I need to discuss this with some friends over a latte and try to come to a consensus.
