Re: religion, environment, and clothes
In India they were Dhoti and a turban. In India temperature soars to 50 degrees and turban help in keeping the head cool. Even a dhoti-kurta helps in cooling the body. These helps in conditions like in India.

The Jain religion in India has two divisions, divided into Digambaras and Swetambaras. The Digambaras Jains are in the south, and the Swetamberas Jains in the north.
In the south, the Digambaras Jain monks wander around all day for miles
(except in the rainy season) completely naked. Various persons along the way feel themselves blessed when they give alms to the naked monks in their bowel which they are carrying with them.
However, the Jains up north wear total white clothing, as the weather is too cold to go naked. (I have seen some Jains in St. Louis in all white clothing, including white turbine).
A fine man from India, but who now is a professor at a university in St. Louis, lectured one evening at the Ethical Society about his Jain religion. On Jain holidays he becomes completely naked at gatherings, along with the other males. He stated that his nudity did not bother him one bit.
Thus, I would say thet the climate dictated the religiious practices of the two Jain groups.
Quote from Wickipedia,
"Male Digambara monks do not wear any clothes and are nude. They practice non-attachment to the body and hence, wear no clothes. Shvetambara monks and nuns wear white clothes. Shvetambaras believe that monks and nuns may wear simple un-stitched white clothes as long as they are not attached to them. Jain monks and nuns travel on foot. They do not use mechanical transport.
