So the server at work apparently "broke" and everyone lost 2 weeks worth of email and saved work. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Sorry, just thought I would vent a little bit

Don't you do nightly backups? Shouldn't lose much if you follow standard IT practices.

Why would everyone be saving to a single server that isn't being backed up frequently? I back up my own personal work to a 6 GB USB drive and take it home and maintain a copy on my home computer.

We have a lot of servers at work, but I probably have at least as much storage capacity on my one home computer as all of the servers combined. I have 890 GB and may be adding a 1000 or 1500 GB external drive fairly soon.

Does your own work include company proprietary data? If so, does your company have a policy about taking the data out of the company? Something like - it's OK if the data has strong encryption on the storage media?

Just Wondering...

It is all proprietary data. Much of it is the only backup that gets done for a lot of data that has taken a very long time to accumulate and organize. The data isn't encrypted, but it would have little or no value to anyone without extensive training in what to do with the information.

There is also a lot of source code for programs that I have written and it is my responsibility to see that years of development doesn't get wiped out if the building were severely damaged or my computer got damaged or destroyed. The programs are for in-house use, so it isn't source code for anything that we sell.

For the most part, management doesn't interfere in what I do because even the IT department doesn't understand it. I have tried to teach them, but their expertise is mainly in setting up servers and commercial business applications.

Sorry but a lot of what you are saying doesnt make much sense to me because I am NOT tech savvy. I think it was backed up but it still lost almost 2 weeks of info. I am not in charge, that is someone elses job at work, but hey, it is a great excuse for when folks ask why I didnt do something I guess.

I hope the person responsible for doing backups got their butt chewed so they won't go so long between backups.
