Hot tubs have the reputation of causing ole John Thomas to want to sit out the festivities and is not conducive to building the monster with two backs.

I wouldn't know, only using them for relaxtion.

But, they are a great way to socialize, relax and encourage slightly hesistant newbies to doff duds and join in.

They require rigorous upkeep and chemical balnce monitoring. Mrs USMC asserts that females have to be particularly cautious about picking up vaginal infections.

Well, since my profession is hot tub repair, if anyone has any questions about them, feel free to ask. USMC is correct in saying that the upkeep of a hot tub is rigorous, so I thank all of you who do not do the rigorous job of maintenance....KERCHING$$$$

I disagree with the upkeep part.It would seem that mine takes care of itself.

I do very little and the water is always ready.

I know of someone who died from legionnaire’s disease gotten from a hot tub that wasn’t maintained physically and chemically at a home recently purchased by a friend of the deceased.

Also, the old style redwood hot tubs harbored something that would cause irritation and infections that wasn’t easy to disinfect or keep sanitary.

The hot tubs or spas and conversation pools at most resorts are carefully monitored for temperature and proper maintenance of the PH and chlorine or chemicals to maintain purity.

If I recall correctly ( and please correct if I am wrong ) but bromide is the preferred treatment for spas now due to the high water temps ( 104 F ). Even high amounts of chlorine do not last long in a spa due to the high temps and the constant aeration of the water when circulated through the pump and jets.

                One myth may be confirmed.

I wouldn't count on it for birth control, but...
Men who want children should skip the hot tub ... for three months in advance, anyway.

Aside from the effects on sperm, I wonder if a high enough hot tub temperature could cause permanent damage to the testicles, not prepared by nature for such things as hot tubs, and meant to stay at a cooler temperature.

                  NakedGary;

I got Legionairres's from an air conditioner at a Florida hotel. I spent eight days in the hospital including three days in ICU. I am lucky I am alive. This is a real concern.

Big-Thinker. I have always enjoyed hot tubs. I have six children.

I don't do hot tubs = people soup. I've also seen a lot of people sitting on the edge without towels too as they get out or in...

I think "ercNY" and "Walt Iliff" are both speaking in terms of broken or the maintenance required fixing or repairing hot tubs.

I hope both of you consider upkeep and regular maintenance and use to include mechanical as well as chemical, testing, cleaning, PH, as well as water quality as upkeep and regular maintenance to ensure a clean & safe hot tub.

Hot tubs and hotel Jacuzzi type tubs do not take care of them self doing very little, and can become toxic, polluted, and dangerous germ factories that can become dangerous to your health.

Especially bad are hotel and resort Jacuzzi type tubs in private rooms. Used polluted, untreated bath water sits in the pipes sometimes for days and weeks brewing all sorts of mold, germs, and unhealthy substances that cannot be cleared by just running the water and circulation pump before use.

Infrequently used, cleaned, and maintained hot tubs especially those used by the public in rented rooms, and private hot tubs to save energy, chemicals, and cleaning are those your at risk in using even if only by your family. Just remember all the toxic, germ producing soup that in the pipes brewing up between use and regular cleaning, disinfecting, upkeep and maintenance.

I understand the latest hot tub and Jacuzzi designs have addressed this problem and have engineered ways of clearing, cleaning, disinfecting, and flushing the circulation pipes before shut down.
