  • "Pastor" Haggard joins the "I did not have sex with..." brigade

I think it's always fitting when yet another religious hypocrite is brought to justice.

    From the Associated Press:

Evangelical leader says he bought drugs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Rev. Ted Haggard said Friday he bought methamphetamine and received a massage from a male prostitute. But the influential Christian evangelist insisted he threw the drugs away and never had sex with the man.

Haggard, who as president of the National Association of Evangelicals wielded influence on Capitol Hill and condemned both gay marriage and homosexuality, resigned on Thursday after a Denver man named Mike Jones claimed that he had many drug-fueled trysts with Haggard.

On Friday, Haggard said that he received a massage from Jones after being referred to him by a Denver hotel, and that he bought meth for himself from the man.

But Haggard said he never had sex with Jones. And as for the drugs, "I was tempted, but I never used it," the 50-year-old Haggard told reporters from his vehicle while leaving his home with his wife and three of his five children.

Jones, 49, denied selling meth to Haggard. "Never," he told MSNBC. Haggard "met someone else that I had hooked him up with to buy it."

Jones also scoffed at the idea that a hotel would have sent Haggard to him.

"No concierge in Denver would have referred me," he said. He said he had advertised himself as an escort only in gay publications or on gay Web sites.

Jones did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press on Friday.

In addition to resigning his post at the NAE, which claims 30 million members, Haggard stepped aside as leader of his 14,000-member New Life Church pending a church investigation. In a TV interview this week, he said: "Never had a gay relationship with anybody, and I'm steady with my wife, I'm faithful to my wife."

In Denver, where Jones said his encounters with Haggard took place, police said in a news release they planned to contact the people involved for information on whether a crime was committed. The statement did not say whether an investigation was under way, and police spokeswoman Virginia Quinones declined to elaborate.

Lynn Kimbrough, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office, said that a public admission isn't enough by itself to bring a case, but that charges will be filed if criminal conduct can be proved.

Jones claims Haggard paid him for sex nearly every month for three years until August. He said Haggard identified himself as "Art." Jones said that he learned who Haggard really was when he saw the evangelical leader on television.

Jones said he went public with the allegations because Haggard has supported a measure on Tuesday's ballot that would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage. Jones said he was also angry that Haggard in public condemned gay sex.

Haggard, who had been president of the NAE since 2003, has participated in conservative Christian leaders' conference calls with White House staffers and lobbied members of Congress last year on U.S. Supreme Court nominees.

The NAE's executive committee issued a statement Friday praising Haggard's service but saying "it is especially serious when a pastor and prominent Christian leader deliberately violates God's standards of conduct."

The statement did not mention the allegations against Haggard beyond noting he had admitted to "some indiscretions."

"Due to the seriousness of Rev. Haggard's misconduct while in the leadership roles he held, we anticipate that an extended period of recovery will be appropriate," the statement said.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto said Friday that Haggard had visited the White House once or twice and participated in some of the conference calls. He declined to comment further, calling the matter a personal issue for Haggard.

Corwin Smidt, a political scientist at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and director of the Institute for the Study of Christianity and Politics there, said that Haggard's role with the association gave him some political clout, but that the group's focus is more on religion than political activism.

"It isn't necessarily that all evangelicals are paying close attention to what he's saying and doing, but he is an important leader," Smidt said.

James Dobson, head of Focus on the Family, an influential conservative Christian ministry based in Colorado Springs, said he was "heartsick" over the allegations. He described Haggard as his close friend and colleague.

Aaron Stern, another pastor at New Life, told Associated Press Television News on Friday that Haggard is a man of integrity and that church members don't know whether to believe the allegations.

Stern said he has been telling church members seeking his advice: "People do things we don't expect them to do, but in the midst of all of that our God is faithful, our God is strong."

Jones took a lie-detector test Friday, and his answers to questions about whether he had sexual contact with Haggard "indicated deception," said John Kresnick, who administered the test free at the request of a Denver radio station.

Jones told reporters afterward: "I am confused why I failed that, other than the fact that I'm totally exhausted."

      Well, well, well.

      Wondering if --

First of all, if these allegations carry some truth, will we see the use of the "I was abused as a child " / "I have a substance problem" defense? The "Foley Shtick".

Second - this guy is a Bush supporter and Bush welcomed him into the White House. Even the White House is distancing themselves from him now.

While this isn't an issue that is going to prop up the Democrats in their presumptive victory, it sure doesn't help the Bush administration.

Although, the military newspapers' unanimous editorial -- unprecedented -- demanding the ouster of Rumsfeld -- is far worse.

And if American casualties rise over the timing of a likely Saddam Hussein guilty verdict and death sentence, it's worse for the Republicans on Tuesday. What will be evil is that some will justify the impending violence, if it happens, as a reason to "stay the course".

The report I saw said that Haggard was accused of having sex with Jones but he stated that he only had a "massage". Jones laughed at this.

I wonder why this hasn't received more press? I seem to think had this been someone associated with the Dem's then it would be all over the news. I know, I am being so unfair. How could I possibly think that way? I keep hearing this phrase in my head,... I did not have sexual relations with that man, it was only a B.J. er, uh, I mean massage.

The story on Haggard led the morning national news here in Canada, which is why I thought it'd be a HUGE deal in the USA.

(Oh yeah, and which US politico had said that he had tried but didn't inhale marijuana? Was that Bill C., too? This guy is saying that he *bought* the meth, but didn't use it. LOL)

Its Haggard, not Haggart -- you may be subliminally recalling the famous evangelical Reverend Jimmy Swaggart who was also caught with his pants down (not in the nudist sense) about a dozen years ago.

He only bought meth, an illegal drug, from this man, apparently while receiving a "massage". Oh yeah, what an honoreable man

I wonder if Mike Jones has a masseuse's licence? My guess is no.

Fuzzy:"The report I saw said that Haggard was accused of having sex with Jones but he stated that he only had a "massage". Jones laughed at this."

I saw him interviewed on TV. When told that Haggard said that he received just a massage, Jones gave a little laugh and stated, "If that what he wants to call it."

So let's see, we have the Florida pedophile working to "protect the children" (those he finds attractive) and now a Colorado (I guess) bisexual who seems willing to pay for homosexual sex while being an activist against them from marrying.

Here in French Quebec, I do not think it makes the news. The big news topics theses times in Quebec are the liberals who are divided about to recognise Quebec as a nation and the conservatives with their environmental plan that most people think does not care about the environment enough (if at all).

But there is a pool that suggests that if there was an election in Canada, the conservatives would still won but with a minority government.

The conservatives are so at odds with the values of Quebec that it will help the Bloc Québécois and the Parti Québécois greatly.

On the other hand, who cares about a gay bashing american preacher here in Quebec?

But we have a catholic priest in Quebec who take a stand against homophobia. I think that he is gay himself but I am not sure. Anyway, he has received the permission of Rome to present himself as a candidate for the Bloc Québécois in Repentigny.

It is almost a miracle that he was not banned from the catholic church for his pro-gay views, but on the other hand, the catholic church is maybe tired of its terrible homophobic and intolerant image it has in Quebec.

I just wonder why we always wind up with multiple threads on the same damn topic.

Really all this proves is what some of us ole boys that grew up down home has always knowed. The worse kids in the whole damn world is the preacher's kids, and they got it from their old man. I ain't kiddin' here y'awl. Them there preacher's daughters can be some horny little monkeys and them there preacher son's is usually nuthin but a dang ole juvy Nile delinquent.

Preacher is like congressmen too, you know; "Preachers is all a bunch of horny hypocrites, cepten mine, and he's just a goldarn saint and all".

But, according to a couple of polls, it has swung Colorado to a little bluer shade of purple.

I mentioned on NudistGuy47's posting that I hadn't noticed he posted his thread around the same time of the day that I started this thread.

But, as of Sunday morning, here's the latest on Haggard (from Associated Press; first few paragraphs only)

Evangelical ousted amid gay sex scandal
                        By KIM NGUYEN,
                        1 hour, 27 minutes ago

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - An independent oversight board dismissed the Rev. Ted Haggard as senior pastor of the megachurch he founded, determining the influential evangelist had committed "sexually immoral conduct."

The board's decision Saturday cuts Haggard off from leadership of the 14,000-member New Life Church.

He had resigned two days earlier as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, where he held sway in Washington and condemned homosexuality, after a Denver man claimed to have had drug-fueled trysts with him. He also placed himself on administrative leave from the New Life Church, but its Overseer Board took the stronger action Saturday.

"Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct," the board said in a statement.

Perhaps you should be a little more attentive to the news. This news is getting national attention. I read the NY Times and it was reported. My local news channel reported this story. Believe me, this is scandalous stuff so the news stations and papers will report this. Americans love and eat these type of stories. It is very sensational.

As for my personal feelings about this. I always knew Haggard was gay. When I first saw him on tv last year, I automatically said, "he's gay."

There are MANY men like Haggard in politics and religion. These men work so hard to deny their homosexuality and work extra hard to fight it. They become very conservative republicans and evangelicals. They are against anything that supports gays and gay rights. Why? They want to convince themselves that they are not gay.

What happened to Haggard, Foley, and McGreevy is what happens to men who try to fight and hide their sexuality. They get involved in really screwed up mess. They worked so hard to not be gay that their true feelings are too strong to fight off. That being said, they fall of the deep end and do damaging things.

Did Haggard have sex with Jones, OF COURSE he did. Jones is/was a hooker. He advertised his services on gay publications and websites. How else did Haggard find him? I do not buy for a moment that Haggard did not use meth. He DID use it. Ever heard of someone buying it and deciding not to use it? Meth can be an EXPENSIVE drug. He would have been an idiot to spend 200-300$ on the drug and not use it. This lie blew up in front of Haggard's face b/c Jones revealed a voice mail where Haggard asked for MORE meth. I am further convinced that he used meth b/c meth lowers your inhibitions and makes you very horny and highly energetic. People high on meth tend to have sex for hours.

This would never have happened to Haggard and many of those right wing individuals if they became honest with themselves. It is not the end of the world to come out and be who you are.

Unfortunate for Haggard, he will never get the support and welcoming of gay and lesbian community. Not did he say and do things that impeded gays from moving foward, he is continuing to deny his homosexuality. Haggard with be force to come out. Unfortunately, it will not be a positive experience. Jim McGreevy is an example of good coming out story. An unfortunate situation encouraged him to come out. He came out distinguishably and is now happy gay man in a long term relationship.

On the flip side Haggard and Foley were forced to come out in a negative way. Foley came out because of his page scandal and Haggard will have to come out because of this mess. In both cases, they will NEVER get the backing and support of gay community. This is sad because any support they could get would help them out and make the process easier. Both men will get nothing and gays want nothing to do with them.

Croydon, thanks for a good expression of the even worse consequences that almost always occur when one attempts to deny the truth. Not just the truth of one's sexuality, but the truth of any situation, or condition, in general.
