Hi everyone..My computer was hit with the W32.mydoom virus from an email that was sent to me..Before norton destroyed it, and it wiped out some files..The background theme XP was wiped out and all the other pictures for the desktop background. I did add and remove programs but the Xp theme is not listed. Does anyone know how to reinstall the default theme for home edition of XP? Or can someone send the pictures so I can reinstall them? I also have when starting my computer get Invalid boot.ini any suggestions of what to do about that also? I haven't had Xp to long and am still figuring it out. I think if you wrote to Microsoft and asked for a system CD, you can reinstall the entire windows XP program. A friend of mine had his computer screen go blank. He notified Microsoft and they sent him a CD. He was able to reinstall the XP programs back to normal. Good luck.

Thanks nudeM..I have the XP CD and tried to run it but it quits because it can't find the boot ini file..When I go into control panel, system, advanced, startup and recovery, edit, the boot ini file is gone..Also when I click on the default operating system button it doesn't show any systems? I don't know what the default boot ini is suppose to be so I can't rewrite it. I am in the process of just reading at Microsoft in the FAQ and forums. Thanks anyway..NoodJuggler

Before you try the disc, you may want to try running system restore. From the start button, go to all programs, accessories, system tools, and click on system restore. XP ceates restore points by dates. Pick a date before your problem started. It may not be able to restore to some dates. Try another if this happens. It should reset your computer back to the way it was on the date you select. At least it's suppose to. Could depend on what damage the virus had done. We had some trouble not long ago and this worked. It's worth a try.
Good luck.

You might also try booting from the CD. I'm not sure how to do that on a Windows machine (having a Mac), but you should be able to find it online somewhere. Then run whatever repair utility you need to fix the damage.

If it would be of any help, I have Win XP Professional, & Office XP Professional, and I found the file "boot.ini.backup" in: C:\windows\pss It's a 1K Backupfile dated 3/17/2002.
My desktop screen backgroud is defaulted to "bliss" [the green pasture, hills, with blue sky and white puffy clouds], and that file "bliss.bmp" is located at C:\windows\web\wallpaper Its a 1.37MB BMP file.

Hi everyone..Thanks to all for the replies..That was nice of you..I just went and downloaded a program called Style XP And I can change my themes and the boot and logon screens. It is a nice program for $20.00 and some of the themes are really really cool, neat, farout, ect...

The virus wiped out my bliss.bmp and the other one with XP on the green background. I would like to reinstall them so that they are there if I want to use them, but I can't find them. I do not use the restore feature. It also wiped out all the other .bmp files that are used for backgrounds except 3 of them.

I could not reinstall windows XP because my boot.ini file was gone, wiped out. But NakedGary said "C:\windows\pss It's a 1K Backupfile dated 3/17/2002" So I went in and looked for a PSS file and copied it back in the Boot.ini file. I was at the time looking for a .bak file but they use .pss. So I got it fixed..Thanks again everyone..NoodJuggler
P.S. If your computer starts eating dirt or you do then it has worms..
