The only threads that resort to such name callings are topics that relate to political and/or religious beliefs. That's why I usually stay away from those threads. Those are the two main subjects that most have strong convictions.
can't we a least tolerate each other and our different viewpoints?
How can we put this point of view to all the war mongering polititions and fanatical religious groups (which probably includes most religions) who manage to make the lives of millions of decent tolerant, kind easy going people miserable.
Would be ideal Simon, but most likely not.
Some will not tolerate any deviation from their perceived notions and when someone actually does deviate from those notions they are pounced upon ... this applies to the real world and these forums reflect that.
Unfortunately, those that are intolerant are oblivious to the fact and accuse everyone else as being intolerant for not holding the same notions.
As nudeM pointed out politics and religions are two areas with strongly held opinions and discussions can be heated there, yet here again intolerance of differences is where the 'problem' herein lays and it is those that are intolerant that attack and ridicule others no matter the topic of discussion simply for not holding the same notions as they ... this happens in the real world as well as these forums. I have pointed this out a number of times on these forums and have received the 'treatment' for it ... as I likely will for pointing it out here. I happened to have read your post immediately after you had posted it but waited to respond until others had so as to hold off such 'treatment' and it's subsequent hijacking of any thread it occurs on.
These threads do very well when a certain individual is not involved. Good dialogue occurs with the exchanging of opinions and facts without one or the other using hateful statements or labeling the posters neo-cons or some other derogatory title. But as usual, this individual jumps into the thread(s) with garish cartoons or starts labeling and jesting about posts and posters they do not agree with.
I enjoy the good dialogue that occurs until...then it is either ignore the disruptive poster or call them down. I do both...but it falls on deaf ears/blind eyes.
We had good dialogue in many threads until these posters blew through the swinging doors of the forum and it has never been the same since.
It is much easier to get along with each other. But that is difficult when you deal with a narcissist who thinks they hung the moon and will brag openly about it and then appeal to the other posters how they are being "treated". As is the prime example of the post above.
Allie, did you have anyone in mind when you cited this "good dialogue" once provided? It might help us to understand where we went so terribly wrong. I'm sure we both lament the loss of mikejb but we must carry-on as best we can with Walter and Clam to help take up the slack. True, they fall somewhat short but then who wouldn't?
b.l.
BTW, how do you know either or both are hung like the moon?
I don't think that you have been here long enough to remember the times when great, civil conversation occurred. For the past two years, the forum has changed to the point where many individuals will no longer post anything. This really is sad and demonstrates what can occur when an individual is allowed to get out of control. Here is a specific case in point. On another thread called "I Miss Iraq.....A Soldier's Story" Naturist Mark and I were having a nice conversation. The along comes Nacktman who plays the game of provocation. He knows fully well what he is doing and when he is called on his actions he cowers and denys any wrong doing. It is very clear that he is trying to drive a number of us from this forum including myself, Allie, Lamont, Moboy, etc but he will never succeed. The best advice given to me in a PM is to just put Nacktman on ignore. This suggestion will be offered to others as well. That way, we no longer have to be bothered with his rants and abuses. It is the perfect way to stop his nonsense and I have thanked the person who sent me the PM for suggesting this idea.
Except I sometimes think of it as fishing. Once you hook one you see the water break, try reeling without snapping the line and not losing your net in the splash.
Some people here are easy to bait and quite predictable. Others not so. And still others move like dusk and dawn; the reaction depends on when you put a line in the water.
Anyway... to answer the question OZ poses:
How can we put this point of view to all the war mongering polititions and fanatical religious groups (which probably includes most religions) who manage to make the lives of millions of decent tolerant, kind easy going people miserable.
Read the Sermon on the Mount. Matthew 5:1 - 7:28. Of course, doing is different than saying, but the answer is there.
Sanslines, very true that there was once some great dialogue and actual debates taking place on the forum. They were interesting and would get lots of posters involved. I found them very interesting and informative. It would be great to see this again, but, not likely to happen with Nacktman, like you said.
Yes, the best thing to do is to put him on ignore and continue posting when dialogue is happening. Responding to him only feeds his frenzy as you have noted and been involved in.
The best advice given to me in a PM is to just put Nacktman on ignore
Well here we go. A post indicating intolerance of others. Sanslines , why do you have to say the above ? Why didn't you just do it - i.e. ignore the post if you wanted to. Why publicise your intolerance of others. I do not think we should all lie down and be walked all over, that is why I am making this post.
NACKTMAN QUOTE "it is those that are intolerant that attack and ridicule others no matter the topic of discussion simply for not holding the same notions as they"
How can we expect the world to be free of fights if, in a friendly forum like Clothesfree we cannot even have a DEBATE , where we can RESPECT each others differing opinions, where we can dissagree with them and argue against them but where we can choose NOT TO "attack and ridicule others".
Is an internet forum a place where humans can anonomiously attack and run and and know they cannot get hurt SO THEY DO ? That is the action of a coward.
LamontCranston tells me the answer to the question asked by Simonsebs is in The Sermon on the Mount. I have probably never read the sermon on the mount so perhaps my answer to Lamont is made through ignorance. I point out to Lamont that the Sermon on the Mount ahs been preached to people for probably nearly 2000 years, millions of people (other than me) have reaqd it or had it preached to them and STILL WE HAVE INTOLERANCE,FIGHTS, WARS . Why has it not solved the problem ?.
I think it is human nature to fight and argue, it's in the genes we have inherited from early humans. I am sure that we are more civilised than humans 20,000 years ago so obviously heading in the right direction we must keep having PEACEFUL debates so as to try and make our point .
