So as I watch a funeral for a great American, I had to watch it turn into a political arena.

    WMD's where even brought up.

This was very bad behavior and sad.

Now I'm no Bush guy, but to have him there,a sitting president, and then have speakers attack him.....sad, rude, and not the time or place.

These people should be ashamed of themselves. They turned it into a political commercial. Some tribute.

This was a great woman who followed the Prince of Peace. They were honoring a part of her life's work. The funeral was a tribute to her, not anyone in the audience.

        Sorry Jason, I can't agree.

Mrs King and her husband were both targets of governmental repression and spying. They were both opponents of war. Mrs. King had to deal with some hard truths in life, and it did not hurt the little princeling a bit to have to deal with some also.

What better place than her funeral eulogies to point out that her frail human life is gone, but the issues which surrounded her life and which she and her husband stood against so monumentally remain with us to this very hour.

Mr. Bush did not have to come, he chose to. In fact, one could make the case, given his politics that his appearance at this aprticular funeral was just that...appearances.

Personally, I think the moment has long been overdue for Mr. Bush to have to listen to what real people think of his japery and nonsense.

For once he could not hide out in front of pre-selected, pre-screened audiences and the right-wing corporate media had no choice but to show it.

        Right on!

You, and those made uncomfortable by all that, deserve and are welcome to your discomfort.

Didn't W do the same thing, turn a Veterans' Day speech into a political foot-stomper?

            This was a funeral...a.funeral.

            not a debate.

            A funeral

Not a place to bring up New Orlieans, WMD's, the budget........

How did calling the president a liar there have anything to do with Mrs. King?

I missed Bush jr's speech, but Bush sr's speech was pretty good. He had me laughing with his jibes to Rev Lowery. When he said he lost a page, and said we'd be in luck because of it, had me laughing too. I turned to my wife and said 'At least he can think on his feet'. I didn't agree with his presidency, but I can respect the man for what he has done since.

Carter's speech was good, but seemed to be a bit of self serving at times, but still a good speech.

Clinton's was by far the best of the bunch. He is an amazing speaker. His jibe at Bush sr was pretty funny too.

Because Bush's presidency has gone against everything the King's have stood for, suffered for, and fought for. It was really hypocritical of Bush jr to be there.

This was one of the rare events where the Shrub could not control the quest list nor agenda. His appearance was an empty political gesture, in fact, another of his lies. The truth is, Greed and Death is the focus
of his life and will be HIS legacy, hardly that of Mrs. (or Mr.) King.

He deserves neither santuary nor rest any place upon this earth (at least until he picks up all the trash and gore he has spread about).

                    Tell It! tell it!

I admit I cringed when I heard the quotes, but, fighting various unchecked evils of government is what this woman's life, and her husband's, was all about. They were bugged. He was improperly jailed (sentenced to four months hard labor for a traffic infraction) and, above all, they championed non-violence as a tool for social Change. Our country is not doing that now, and that's not Rumsfeld's fault (mostly), that's our leader.

Good. He got to hear what america thinks, not just audiences cleared by the RNC.

Question, hypothetical: If the Govt had done a good job w/katrina, and then the speakers had trumpeted the aid given by Bush's administration to struggling blacks (OK wildly hypothetical) would that have been an inappropriate introduction of politics?

Jason, you just don't seem to "get it". Mrs. King was a freedom fighter and was at the forefront of the civil rights and peace movements. Any tribute to her that overlooked what she was about would not be a tribute; it would be a lie!

The Neocon Party was there during the struggles of the 60's, they blocked the doors of the schools and did everything they could to prevent civil rights. It certainly seems peculiar that Bush, who's party tried to derail the Civil Rights Movement was there to praise her. Oh that's right...for him it was just a photo-op.

Here is the proof the the behavior was anything but disgusting. Who was there for the funeral? Mrs. King's family and her supporters. When the comments that offended you were uttered, what happend? Did they offend those that came to mourn Mrs. King? NO! In fact, her family and supporters cheered. Hmmm. Now tell me exactly who was offended?

This would be like someone bringing up your cable bill at your funeral.

                          It's rude and classless.

Not the place nor time to sling mud, not at a funeral.

You talk about her accomplishments, life stories, etc, etc,

                          Not WMD's, wiretaping.

Let's see, "She was a great person......and would have been greater without the WMD's lies of this man here today"

                          No excuse.

It was a funeral, not an editoral page.

It's still no excuse to look childlike and belittleing the event.

I guess rudeness is ok. They where cheering at a funeral, for a man they hate. He went to a hostle place and they did that?

This has nothing to do with equal rights.

                            This was a funeral.

Give speaches afterwards, now people are remembering the speaches.....not the Lady.

You really need to consider the source.

After Watergate, the conventional wisdom was that the Republicans would wander in the wilderness for many, many years. After a mere four years of Jimmy Carter, though, the country elected Ronald Reagan twice and then Bush Sr. once.

I think that says a lot about Mr. Carter.
