• Nude Trekkies Unite!

Okay, starting this thread...

So, Who could beat who in a fight, Kirk or Picard? LOL just kidding!

But seriously (NOT) folks, nudity does seem to be represented well in the future of Star Trek, while it is not openly accepted everywhere, it is at least tolerated throughout the Federation.

Example One: The Betazoids practice ritual nudity at several ceremonies, including weddings. (TNG)

Example Two: The Ferengi use nudity to keep their women in check. (Okay, this isn't a GOOD example, but it is an example of a society that openly accepts nudity.)

Example Three: Vulcans apparently are often nude when undergoing various disciplines..including the Kolihnar. Also, as a logical race, they are not embarrassed about mixed nudity (ENTERPRISE).

Example Four: Even humans seem to have accepted mixed bathing and berthing, at least among the non-comms aboard the Enterprise-A. (STVI:TUC)

There may be more...anyone think of others?

With the four examples you've mentioned, it's odd that the majority of the television viewing public wont remember them, yet a 30 second scene of Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct will be remembered for generations.......and therein lies our delimma.......(just FYI, Sysco from Deep Space Nine could whip both of 'em)

I am also a Star Trek Fan. One thing I have wondered about in relation to Star Trek and nudism is where the nudists are in Star Trek and what nudism is like in the various Star Trek eras.

Well, here's a theory, with nudity now being more openly accepted, only hardcore nudists would really be the only nudists left, as most "closet" or "home nudists" would now be just about everyone else! So, those hard core nudists would probably populate nearly all of what was once Florida (whats left of it after the big attack last season), or move to Luna City, or somewhere else, like Angel One, or Haven...BTW, those two locations are very C/O if you ask me! Risa seems like it might be the C/O beach of the future too...kind of half expect to see a Hedonism MMC club there! LOL Not that I approve of the ideals behind the Hedonism franchise.

There is also an episode on STNG where Troy, her mother, Worf and his son are all taking a nude mud bath together.

Yes, Gary, but are they REALLY nude under that mud? With a young boy there, and the hysteria about children seeing nude adults, I find it hard to believe Hollywood would be allowed to expose a child to adult nudity like that. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with doing that, because there isn't, but he would have had to see the adults nude at some point. The same with the wedding where the woman walked in nude (supposedly), and the boy was there. Some people would be like my niece was when I told her there were children at the nudist resort. She said, "Children SEE that?"

Jon-Marc, You are probably right that in those scenes, there was probably no "real" nudity, but the idea is presented as being that they are really nude within the context of the show's "reality". In other words, while I think we all realize that these are just shows, they depict a vision of the future where nudity is more openly accepted across the boards...even among children.

I agree that they are most likely wearing some clothing under the mud. After all this is a TV series which airs on commercial television. As with other shows, it is common for the actors to be actually wearing clothing which is stratigically placed to give the appearance of nudity.

I also don't believe they were naked in front of the child or for that matter in front of each other. But they general impression presented is that they are nude and it is acceptable.

I also wonder if contact with other races makes one more comfortable with their own nudity. Notice that every one of the "aliens" that are pictured in the "Secret government tapes" are all naked and yet, there is no shock about that. Asume you are aboard the Enterprise: Do you think that seeing an alien race naked would be shocking or interesting (especially that barber, you know, the blue guy with a seam down his face?)

Now for some TNG examples:

"There is also an episode on STNG where Troy, her mother, Worf and his son are all taking a nude mud bath together."

Also in that episode, Lwaxanna Troi, Counselor Deanna Troi's mother, is getting married and, after going through the fitting of the dress, she finally decided that she was going to dress in her best Betazed wedding attire (nothing). The wedding was in Ten Forward, meaning that she apparently had to walk through a lot of the ship naked and upon entrance, she only shocked the potential groom and his "Minister of Protocol." Everyone else who was in attendance could see and no one batted an eye, not even Worf's son, Alexander.

In another episode, Q is expelled from the collective and appears on the Bridge of the Enterprise naked. He makes a comment when he is clothed about having to be clothed because of some antiquated sense of modesty or something to that effect.

In "Chain of Command, Part II" Picard, having been captured by the Cardassians is stripped naked in order to dehumanize him, or rather break him down. Gul DeMet (?) tells him that he will only call him, "Human."

Also, when Data's "mother" appears on the Enterprise, we find out stories of his "childhood" like before he was programmed with modesty and would not wear clothes. After all, clothes would be unnecessary for an android, even if he is "endowed."

I'm a biyt of a Trekkie.
Favorite captains. in order:

Picard
Janeway
Sisco
Kirk
Archer

Second in command
Kira
Riker
Spock
Tuvok

Yeah, I guess I am a Trekkie. Where is the Spock gremlin?

Kirk would beat them. Picard would make them our friends. Guess which one I'd rather see fighting, or rather confronting, aliens!

Gee, I wonder what an "illegal alien" would be in the ST universe?

Jon-Marc, you'd be surprised the amount of nudity adults and children of the theatre are exposed to. They are more comfortable with it than most children.

Especially, live stage performers who make quick changes off to the side to save time.

I remember reading an interview with the actor, John DeLancie, when that was filmed. He said they tried every "nude" costume they could think of, but the other actors just didn't give an authentic response. Since it was a closed set, he offered just to shoot it nude, and the director went for it. That was the take they used.

In response to the post about theater people being more relaxed about nudity -- very true. I used to work for our local community theater, and even in a fairly conservative small town, we were pretty relaxed about at least partial nudity. There just isn't always time or space to indulge everyone's sense of modesty. In fact, a friend of mine used to say that modesty is the second thing you lose in theater.
