    Tax his tobacco,
    Tax
    his drink,
    Tax him if he
    Tries to think.

    Tax his
    cigars,
    Tax his beers,
    If he cries, then
    Tax his
    tears.

    Tax his car,
    Tax his gas,
    Find other ways
    To tax
    his ***

    tax all he has
    Then let him know
    That you won't be
    done
    Till he has no dough.

    When he screams and
    hollers,
    Then tax him some more,
    Tax him till
    He's good and
    sore.

    Then tax his coffin,
    Tax his grave,
    Tax the sod
    in
    Which he's laid.

    Put these words
    upon his tomb,
    "Taxes
    drove me
    to my doom..."

    When he's gone,
    Do not relax,
    Its
    time to apply

Well, these taxes may not have been in use 100 years ago, but they didn't have a federal highway system which we all use. Unheard of back then were the dams, garbage disposal, waste water treatment plants, bridges and tunnels, etc. that we expect in our society.
I could go on and on, but you get the idea. I don't mind paying some taxes, but when our tax money is wasted or misused then I get upset.

The way I understand it is that the Federal Income Tax was to pay for WWI. After the government saw how much money was being generated they tried to make it permanent.

When the Amendment went to the States for ratification most shot it down or changed it completely. The Speaker of the House was the biggest supporter of the Amendment and when it got to his level disapproved, he pushed it through anyway.

I heard that on talk radio a few years ago. A former IRS agent spent 20 years going through each State's legistlation about the Amendment and when he presented it to his superiors he was let go. I wish I could remember what his name is because without it, most of what I just wrote sounds like a conspiracy theory and I don't blame anyone for thinking so.

So I'm just putting this out for general consumption. Hopefully someone else knows about this story as well or other clarifying information.

I suspect that you are off a couple of years on the effective date.

The sixteenth amendment passed 02/06/1913 is the authority of which congress operates under for income taxes.

The original income tax was to pay for the Civil War.

If anyone has read the detailed article in the latest edition of U.S. News and World Report concerning the bribes and corruption associated with Randy 'Duke" Cunningham, the reader will know to what extent outright waste, fraud, corruption, and deception is prevalent in government. The current administration appears to be loaded with corruption with (as an example) so many civilians profiting from Iraq war contracts while the troops continue to fight, get maimed, and die. The democrats response to the current administration is to win this Fall's elections so that they can raise taxes on the 'wealthy', and cancel certain repub programs. Neither party seems interested in eliminating the fantastic waste that is prevalent in government today. Each party is as bad as the other and as time goes on we can look to additional taxes in the form of higher rates and more taxes.

Taxes buy civilization. We formed this nation and governement for the common good, common defense, and health, education and welfare of its citizens. We did not form it to allow stateless corporations to escape their tax responsibilites and to use their ensuing profits to subvert our politicians and use our military to increase and protect those profits.

Nor did we establish this nation to create a class of idle wealthy, built on the backs of workers, to be passed along to generation after generation.

A fair tax code and eliminating government waste, capricious spending and irresponsible fiscal policies would go far to relief some of the onus of taxes on top of taxes on top of taxes.

I will say this, however, about the dig at Democrats complaints about Bush's so-called tax breaks. It has been demonstrated and documented over and over that his tax breaks primarily benefit the wealthiest of the wealthy.

Putting this into perspective...people such as Paris Hilton are the ones who benefit. She gets a huge tax break so she can sit on her skanky, bony butt and drink and drug while hard working, decent Americans fight to make ends meet and 43-million Americans, 25% of which are children go without health care.

Kids started school this month all across America who did not have the advantage of vision, dental or health screening, so that Paris Hilton, et ux, can live lives of idleness. That's not hot--that's dead wrong!

USMC, you said it!! Isn't it odd that a certain party just loves to cut taxes to Paris and her kind, yet do noting to eliminate the tax on unemployment payments?
