  • Sunday Morning TV Preachers

Just wondering if anyone watches any of the Sunday Morning TV preachers? Does anyone actually believe in what they are preaching? Why do so many people give so much money to those preachers and what makes them so uniquely qualified to be the voice of GOD on this planet?

Yes, I go to Mass every Sunday. Yes, I listen and participate. Yes, I believe what is said. Yes, I give them money. Yes, I see things they say appear in people and situations in my life. And yes, things I ask for come to pass.

As for TV preachers, I like listening to people explain how a Bible passage might relate to my situation today. Sometimes it clicks, sometimes it appears self-serving (their self). I take what I like and leave the rest.

I think we need to keep in mind that there is a lot of variety amongst them. The ones who get the most attention tend to be the worst, the hardcore fundies and the hucksters. I do believe that there are some legitimate ones as well, usually more quiet. Think of them like umpires; when they make a good call they're invisible, when they mess up everybody knows it.

I wouldn't watch them if someone paid me.

Inside every TV evangelist lies the wreck of a used car salesman!

I think it is important to watch TV evangelists now and then in order to get an idea of the sort of mindset that has made America what it is today.

Rev. Dr. Robert H. Schuller was one of the very few prominent TV preachers who was worth watching. Needless to say, even though he is a true evangelist, the evangelical right doesn't much care for him. His son Robert Jr. now leads the ministry as chief pastor of the Crystal Cathedral, their program the Hour of Power is the most watched religious broadcast in the world - surpassing all of the RRR broadcasters.

While I am somewhat an admirer of the Schullers, I'm not necessarily a follower. Still, they prove that the RRR is not the only game in town, and NOT representative of more than a portion of religious life in America - despite the false picture that the media paints.

I have been known to watch Robert Schuller on occasion. I enjoy the music and they often have interesting speakers. That is about the only television church show I watch. I am an active member of a church in real life, so would rather be among friends.

Schuller's good but one guy I always try to catch when he's on, though we diverge in a few areas, is Rev. Tony Campolo. Hey, why not watch him now being interviewed by George Strombolopoulos:

My favorite is the late Dr. Gene Scott. I used to pause on his program from time to time as I was cycling through channels.

He was, if nothing else, honest. I recall one program which consisted solely of him sitting in an easy chair, smoking a very large cigar, angrily telling his faithful that they weren't sending him enough money. Another program consisted of him telling the audience about his race horse.

Even though he was on the religion channel, there wasn't much religion talked about. But he was always fun to watch.

I rather watch the "ladies" on The View than breathe the same air as those freaking perverts on Sunday morning TV and The View "ladies" make me puke, at least they know and admit they're lying to you unlike the "preachers" of the immoral minority.

Of course. How else are they going to afford to make the payments on their mansion and expensive autos.

Oh Hell YES! I had forgotten about him. Used to get really ripped on Mexican gold and red wine and watch him in the late hours, sometime after the Midnight Special and Doug Kirchner's Rock Concert had signed off.

He used to talk endlessly about Joseph of Arimethia and Jesus's visits to the British Isles. The dude was stone cold cosmic!

And, I used to watch Swaggert just to get in touch with my down home penny-coaster roots. Damn, that boy could preach! Better'n a tent revival in Southern Illinois in August.

What many folks don't know is that Swaggert, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Mickey Gilley were cousins and from Faraday Louisiana, where they had a penny-coaster (for yankees that there would be Pentecostal)aunt who taught them all to play the piano in that key hammering, barrel house, kick over the bench style.
