Was just fired for the Holidays.

I typically don't lay my personal problems out on the line, but I feels compelled to share this: I was fired after four years of working for a big corporation, and it happened one week before Thanksgiving. The reason I was given: Internet use. And it happened on the spot, without warning or notice. Granted, it was a crap job that I pretty much hated; but it was still a paycheck.

The lesson here is: no matter who tells you it's ok to surf, that nobody cares, that as long as you do your job it's ok; DON'T DO IT! It's a chance not worth taking. Those are the exact words I was told; and obviously, someone lied.

The sad thing is that I didn't surf much; just dropped in here a couple of times a day. I figure that this couldn't possibly be it; but I guess that I'll never know now.

I know this is not really a place for networking; but if anyone is aware of any Accounting openings around Atlanta, please PM me.

Maybe it wasn't that you were surfin too much, maybe they saw where you were surfing and didn't like it.

I'm interested in who told you it was ok to surf...was it your supervisor or just a coworker?

Sorry to read about your misfortune, Nudony.

Feel that they should have given you a warning first.

Was there any written documentation that described what degree of internet use, if any, was allowed?

Where I work every computer with internet capability has a warning on the front For Business Use Only. In spite of this, one programmer was fired when the computer support team found over 15,000 porn entries in his files. We figured he was lucky he didn't do some jail time too.

I'm very sorry to hear this, Nudony. Life can be a pain in the... - well, you know. From your posts, I certainly believe you're a very intelligent guy and in a large metropolitan area like Atlanta, I bet you'll be okay, at least in/with time - maybe even better off as you deserve more than "a crap job".

My direct supervisor AND the IT support guy. The internet audit was requested at a higher level though; by people that didn't even know me.
Oh yeah...three other people got the axe that same day.
But still...what's done is done and I want to move forward.

IF you want to fight this (big IF, since you seem not to like the job anyway), you would seem to have grounds to contest the firing since you checked with both your direct supervisor and the IT guy.

Of course that might not accomplish anything other than perhaps getting them fired also.

I am truly sorry that you lost your job over this. I have been extremely cautious about Internet usage at work. I limit myself to checking e-mail (and that's for business correspondence only). Five or six years ago, it was "Surf City", but everywhere I go, companies are cracking down on this stuff.

At one job, I was told to capture the Internet log to document the surfing of someone in another department. We had a copy of every Web page that person visited and it led to the immediate termination of this person.

I was just doing my job and felt sorry for the person caught. There but for the grace of God go I.

But do pick yourself up, brush off the dust and get cracking with that job search.

It's very unfortunate that it happened--especially at this time of year. However, if you were told by your supervisor that it was OK, I would have told them that. Why bother with that now, especially since you didn't like the job? I was in a job I hated for 28 years until I retired. When You have no special skills like me, you take what you can get and try to hang on. If only I had stayed in the Air Force and retired from there. Ah well, life and its regrets. Good luck in finding a job you actually like.

Sorry it happened, but on one side I do understand the bosses side.

Personal phone calls are a nono also, as are visits from friends and family in the workplace.

The internet is the new thing added to this group.

As your supervisors, well they must not be the smartest ones arround, telling you personal internet use is ok, they should know better.

Hopefully you will secure a position quickly. If internet access is Ok, get written permission even then I would keep it to a minimum for personal use.

Sorry to hear you lost your job, but, hopefully, you will find a job you like. Look for the open door and, if possible, don't take the first job that comes along without investigating it first.

And no matter what anyone tells you, when it comes to working for others, work must always take priority and leave the play at home.
