FOX Ratings In Free Fall - O'Reilly Leads The Way Down

As we all know, the media is rampant with sycophantic, corporate shills and can't be trusted to deliver a pizza. But an interesting trend is developing that ought to shake their confidence in the suck-up school of journalism.

The just released February ratings (pdf) for cable news networks tell a tale that is decidedly downbeat for Fox News, the leader in propaganda programming. In a comparison with February 2005, the numbers for every network are up except for Fox. Details follow.....

This may come as some surprise to Bill O'Reilly who, in a moment of empathy for his competition at MSNBC, started a petition to replace Keith Olbermann with former MSNBC host, Phil Donahue. O'Reilly felt sorry for what he said was the net's poor performance. Never mind that Olbermann's show drew more viewers than MSNBC's conservative hosted shows. And I certainly doubt that Bill was just being indignant because Keith was being mean to him on a nightly basis. Now Bill has to swallow the difficult truth that Keith's viewership is growing while his own is shrinking. In the key demographic group of viewers aged 25-54, the Total Day ratings for MSNBC rose 47% while Fox declined -13%.

Fox's Prime Time erosion was even greater at -21%. In fact, in every hour in the daypart, from 3:00pm till midnight, Fox numbers were lower. This is a distinction that only Fox, of the five nets surveyed, was able to achieve.

The largest decline was suffered by Greta Van Susteran's On The Record (-22%), followed closely by O'Reilly (-21%). Hannity & What's His Name took the Bronze (-17%). Of the MSNBC programs opposite those losers, Olbermann's Countdown was the biggest gainer (55%), which I'm sure doesn't bother O'Reilly at all.

The growing feud between Bill and Keith is something unique in commercial television. It has taken on a personal tone that I can't recall witnessing before. There is, however, a difference in style. While Olbermann is merciless in his mockery, he sticks to commenting on the substance of O'Reilly's program and the stupid or demonstrably false things that O'Reilly says. Billy, on the other hand, seems to respond only by pointing out that more people watch his show than Olbermann's. You know, the 2 million flies defense. But if O'Reilly isn't careful, he may soon not have even that to crow about.

O'Reilly is in full melt-down mode in his feud with Olbermann. He is now theatening callers to his radio show with 'action' from Fox Security for merely mentioning Keith Olbermann's name.
        quote:
        O'REILLY: Orlando, Florida, Mike, go.

CALLER: Hey Bill, I appreciate you taking my call.

        O'REILLY: Sure.

CALLER: I like to listen to you during the day, I think Keith Olbermann's show --

O'REILLY: There ya go, Mike is -- he's a gone guy. You know, we have his -- we have your phone numbers, by the way. So, if you're listening, Mike, we have your phone number, and we're going to turn it over to Fox security, and you'll be getting a little visit.

HILL: Maybe Mike is from the mothership.

O'REILLY: No, Maybe Mike is going to get into big trouble, because we're not going to play around. When you call us, ladies and gentleman, just so you know, we do have your phone number, and if you say anything untoward, obscene, or anything like that, Fox security then will contact your local authorities, and you will be held accountable. Fair?

        HILL: That's fair.

O'REILLY: So, just -- all you guys who do this kind of a thing, you know, I know some shock jocks. Whatever. You will be held accountable. Believe it.

Several callers have reported receiving return calls from 'Fox Security', who apparently are not very well informed about WHY they are leaning on people, only that they are under pressure from a powerful Fox superior to put the fear into them.

Of course word of the falafal perflufle raced throughout the blogosphere and got back to Olbermann, who decided to check up on the legalities involved. Turns out it is not the callers who may be in trouble with the law.

Punch O'Reilly in the nose with cursor to go to video.

I watch the Fox when the little right wing hens are fleeing the coop.

In answer to the question, only those that have had their lobotomies already watch FOXNews on a steady basis.

Those awaiting their lobotomy sometimes seek a peek at a real news source, albeit rarely.

              It's called FAUXNews, not "FOXnews".

              Get it straight, dude.

              Tongue out of cheek....

Funny you mention "security"... I would be about as scared of "Fox News Security" (what is that, the security guard at the front desk?? Oohhh, I'd be SHAKING!!!! )

At one time I told someone who threatened me like that -- in Jack Nicholson style - "yeah... I'm real scared. Real scared of your security. Like I was when I saw Godzilla. Now, were you scared when you saw that? Oh, I was. "

I admit to watching Fox when Kiran Chetry is on the air, but generally I hang out at MSNBC.

I think Olberman is just as arrogant as O'Reilly, just in a different political camp, it's still camp!

I am a big fan of Lou Dobbs. I hate missing his shows.

David, your point is well-taken. ITN has some interesting stories from around the world.

On the 'Net, I turn to Reuters to get a lot of those overseas stories we are so starved for here.
Of course if you want in-depth news you can find sites specific to each country. For instance, the Jerusalem Post has an important Web prescence.

A lot of people enjoy the Web logs, some are more informative, some more argumentative, so its a mixed bag.

                          FOX getting Foxy?

During various news reports covering the 78th annual Academy Awards, Fox News Channel removed the on-screen text that normally appears at the bottom of the screen -- offering unobstructed views of female Fox News correspondents and commentators in revealing attire.
