I can't speak for the Luray, Virginia area specifically but there is a tradition of sorts called "Hike Naked Day." Every summer solstice, (June 21/22?) you are likely to run across quite a few hikers who have stuffed their clothes in their backpacks and let it all hang out for the day!

My girlfriend and I just made the mistake of going camping along Skyline Drive in the second half of October, but our visit coincided with an unseasonable cold snap. People were complaining down in the valley, but up on top of the hills it was one long shiver. Ice formed in our water bucket the first night and never melted all week. We usually sleep nude, but on this trip we piled on all the clothes we had--not exactly a romantic sojourn.

Anyway, one day the lady went off to ride a horse (she ended up sitting around in the lobby of the lodge instead, because they don't let the horses out if it's very cold or windy, and it was both) but I went for a hike. I picked out a loop that would descend far enough into the valley that I'd get to see some waterfalls, and of course I was hoping to scout out a swimmin' hole or two. I'd say that in warm weather you'd have some good chances for a dip, but I was surprised at how many people were out on the trail. On a weekday in October, with near-freezing weather, I passed two groups, one of them with a dozen or so people, and several couples and some singles. This was well way from the trailhead. Maybe foliage season is a prime time there, but if it's like that in summer I'd call it a bit too crowded for good nuding.

I think that June 21 thing is a joke among hikers, rather than something they actually do. I've talked to a few of the long-distance hikers and they all said "We looked for anyone naked, but never saw any."

We went to Luray, to see the famous cavern. Comparatively, it was lovely and warm down there.

No not Luray, but there is several miles of the trail just south of Harpers Ferry that can safely be hiked nude. As for June 21st(past) out of 25 or so hikers I passed, 2 were nude.

We also have some TRAIN tracks to hike around here

i live in charlottesville, va. i go nude hiking all the time in the shenandoah nat'l park. i will not go nude on mar 21, nor june 21...the law is out in force on those two days actively seeking nude- hikers. (they, too, have heard the rumors about nude-hike on first day of spring, and summer solstice) the rest of the year, they leave us alone. seems they are only interested in making a public-show of it when the people who opposed such a thing make it abig deal. i have had many join me, once they find it to be real, and not just a stunt. freedom is good

                  nekkidincville,
Shenandoah is a pretty popular park with a lot of visitors. You undoubtedly had some textile encounters during your hikes. Any problems as a result of those encounters?

2 sections, both meander back & forth on the state lines. On top of the hill above Chestnut Hill RD and behind a sub-division called shanondale.
