  • NY Nude Beaches?

    Hey,

I am 23/m and moving to NY (Queens Area, for graduate school) and I hear there is a nudist beach around there.

Can anyone tell me more about that? The demographics of the beach and things of that nature?

And hopefully there are some other people on here that also go to that beach so they can tell me what it is like.

I would greatly appreciate some feedback.

    Thanks

The closest, and LEGAL beach is Lighthouse Beach, adjacent to Robert Moses State Park.

Here is how you get there:

      (1) From where ever you are in Queens, get to The Grand Central Parkway heading east.
      (2) Take the Grand Central Parkway to The Cross Island Parkway heading south. Bear to the left on the CIP and the two left lanes will feed you onto
      (3) The Southern State Parkway. Take the SSP east and watch for the signs for "Meadowbrook PKWY south to Jones Beach". I believe this is exit 22, but watch for the signs.
      (4) Stay on the Meadowbrook PKWY south, and as you approach the toll booths for Jones Beach, bear to the left where two lanes bypass the toll boooths. DO NOT PAY TOLL!
      (5) Meadowbrook PKWY will now become OCEAN PARKWAY.
      (6) Proceed on Ocean Parkway, past all of the Jones Beach fields, and continue for about 20 miles past all of the other Nassau beaches and western Suffolk beaches. You will eventually come to an exit that says ROBERT MOSES STATE PARK CAUSEWAY. Bear right and take this exit.
      (7) Proceed over the causeway and you will see the obelisk. Bear right around the obelisk and follow the signs to fields 4 & 5.
      (8) Enter field 5 ($8 fee after 8am during the week and 7am on weekends). Go to the eastern most end of the parking lot. You will see an entrance onto the dunes boardwalk nature trail.
Enter the trail and stay on it until you get to the first road ( a little less than a half mile walk). When you get to the road go to the right along the road for about 75 yards and you will come to another boardwalk going over the beach dunes. You will see a sign that says "Nude bathers may be encountered". You've arrived.

The beach is separated into two geographic sections. At this entrance point you are on the western section which is closest to the parking fields and Robert Moses State Park. If you walk east along the beach, you will see a sign that says "end of clothing optional area". There is a 200 yard clothed zone here, which includes a path leading directly to the Lighthouse (which has clean bathroom facilities). IF you keep walking east you will come to the eastern section of the clothing optional area which extends to just before the first of the Fire Island Beach Communities.

The western section is the more populated one.

The demographics is mostly people in their 30s,40s,50s + with a smattering of 20s, hardly any teens, and a couple of little kids accompanied by parents or grandparents, of course.

The eastern section of the beach will have less gawkers and weirdos coming by from the adjacent Robert Moses beaches.

The only other legal nude beach in the NY Metro area is in Sandy hook NJ. This involves not only toll bridges, the NJ turnpike and/or Garden State pkwy, but in my estimation the worst road in the NY area - The Belt Parkway -.

The reason both of these beaches are legal is because they are part of the National Shore recreation area. On state land, both in NY and NJ, nude bathing is NOT legal, although in NYS topless IS legal -wherever it is legal for males to be topless, women also may be topless (as long as they are not behaving in a "lude and lacivious manner").

There are other known nude beaches along eastern long island, further east on Fire Island, but access is not as convenient. The Pines eg. is well known as a gay beach.

Lighthouse beach is a nice mix of straight singles and couples, and gay singles and couples.

        Hey,

Thanks a lot Zevei. That was awesome that you took the time to write all that for me. Way beyond what I expected, which shows there are some awesome people out there.

        Thanks Again,

And maybe I will see you there someday

Don't discount Gunnison! You don't have to take the Belt Parkway if you don't want - in fact, you don't have to take a car at all!

The NY Waterway has a ferry that runs on weekends directly to the hook, dropping you off quite close to the beach. Not only that, Gunnison is a very large and friendly beach that enjoys complete legal status (in fact, it's the most popular beach there). The hook is very beautiful, too.

Personally, I can't decide between beaches, and I like to alternate.

Enjoy the beaches, I know you will.

Where do you pick up the NY Waterways ferry? In Manhattan? Since you are in Brooklyn, with ready access to many subways, that would be pretty convenient. We have a friend who enjoys Gunnison as well, and I'd like to see that area. However if you are talking convenience from either Queens, which has less subway lines than Brooklyn, or Nassau, where I am; then Lighthouse Beach is much easier to get to.

If you have a schedule of NYWaterways or know where to find one, could you please post it?

            Thanks very much.

As you were told by the other member, the closest nude beach for you is The Lighthouse.
Now, to save yourself a lot of time / traffic do the following: EXIT the Southener State Pkway by exit # 40....This exit puts you directly on the ROBERT MOSES STATE Pkway.....Follow the RMSp to the end, circle the obelisque halfway and go to field # 5. Park. Walk 1 mile + (2 walkways) and you are there....ENJOY !!!!!!

If you don't get to Lighthouse Beach early enough on a weekend you might not be able to get into the parking lot. When I know that I won't be leaving home until later in the morning, I just head to SMITH POINT BEACH.

Smith Point's nude section is to the west of the regular county beach. It's a little hike and there are only a fraction of the people...but nude is nude.
