I would guess (after searching on the net) that a "No See Um" is a midge or mosquito, or some other small little bitey thing.
Thankfully not too many of those over here, not something I would want to deal with while unclothed.

hey come here to ontario in cottage country where we have black flies and horse flies that if the bite you, you will know by the feel of blood running down from where you where bite. Once in water stay in water if not its dinner time for them.

To avoid the natural insects in Florida, first wash all the natural body oils from your intire body including your hair. Now replace that oil with sun or skin lotion, (Avon's Skin So Soft) many have thier own preferance. As well as your natural smell your hart beat makes you a target, so you need to buy a sonic devise to block that sound and carry it near you.

Old timers on the Georgia coast say that drinking water with lots of sulfur will help ward off biting gnats and mosquitos. Our coastal areas generally have a lot of sulfur in the ground water. To make it more palatable, a slice of lemon makes the sulfur taste easier to endure.
Garlic in the diet seems to help ward off bugs as well.
The sea breeze keeps the bugs from moving toward you. When it stops, look out!

hahaha! It's funny because I have been told by two different people that No See Um is the official name for insects so small that you don't really see them but you know they are there because they bite you. I imagine these people think it is spelled something like 'nozium' or some such nonesense. I told them that it was a made up term that is supposed to sound like " No See 'Em " but they didn't believe me. My sister even sited her "very reputable sources" but I still just laugh that she thinks it is a real word.

They are just a very small variety of gnat, which is a biting fly. I think the name "No See Um" is a good one and there's no reason not to use it.
Sometimes I call them: @#%^!!!>% bugs! (unprintable curse word deleted)
A lot of people with screened porches are amazed that these boogers fly right through regular screen. In some parts of the US, a special "No See Um screen" is available and that's what it takes to keep them out.

Here in coastal S. Carolina they are worst early in the morning and late afternoon. Trailscout you are right on. Normal screens will not keep them on the other side! Many screened porches are built and very rarely used. While I do not like the stuff any of the sprays with Deet are effective. Do not play golf with out a spray as they are fierce little devels. More of a problem that mesquitoes.
