Why is that? I hear that there is a lot of sexual activity there...especially gay sex...right out in the open. Is that true?

That is because the law says so, not because of any sex that might go on there. What you heard is basicly not true. There is a problem with gawkers and some of them masturbate while gawking. I can't say no sex ever happens there but to say there is a lot of it would not be accurate and to especially link it to gays would not be accurate either.

There is a long story behind the law at Hippy Hollow. What it comes down to is that Bob Morton's son (Bob is head of NAC and anyone that doesn't know what NAC is should hang their heads in shame)sued the county when the law was changed to stop admitting minors. I think the county had decided that rather than have the park rangers and local law actually do their job it was easier to just ban kids. Unfortunately they lost the lawsuit.

I saw a nudist documentary last night that included information and views of Hippie Hollow. It looks BEAUTIFUL and I wish I could go visit soon. Maybe someday.

Typical of beurocrats. Why deal with the problem head on? Let's just keep them kids out. Viewing sex is bad for them. Oh wait, public sex is illegal. Who cares? Gotta save them kids. More patrols? Why? We don't need patrol there more. Just get them rowdy kids out of there.
Somewhere (on these forums, I think) someone said that when adults are around children, they tend to act as adults. But when they are just around other adults, they tend to act like children.
As far as I know, Hippie Hollow is the only public area in the US that is open to the general public that bars children. Make some place adults only and you get that atmosphere.

Another minor controversy regarding Hippie Hollow is the new fee---it costs $10.00 per vehicle, which is $2.00 more than any other park run by the county, and of course it raises many questions as to why. Even if you buy a 1 year pass which will allow you into the other parks with no further charges, you still have to pay an extra $2.00 at Hippie Hollow. I had a chat about this with one of the park rangers last week and she said people generally were unhappy about this.
I've not been to many clothing optional places open to the public, but I have been to Hippie Hollow many times, and it is wonderful place to visit---to sun, float on a raft, to swim, etc. Because the shoreline is very curvy and is stacked with rough boulders, almost like a "step-pyramid" it does afford many little nooks and crannies for a bit of semi-privacy. Any place like this is going to have a certain percentage of gawkers, a certain number of people who wear swimsuits, probably some who get sexually aroused, etc...it's all just human behavior. I have never felt "unsafe" while out there, and I go quite often. I highly recommend it.

I have been to Hippie Hollow many times and find it very relaxing. There is a small trail overlooking the lake that you can walk from one end of Hippie Hollow to the next and after a few hours in the hot Texas sun, a nice dip in the lake. If the lake level is down enough, you can find some secluded areas to relax. Bad thing is the gawkers. Its not to hard to spot them sitting there staring in their clothes!!! Best time to go is on the weekends.
