• Myrtle Beach beaches??

I'll be heading for Myrtle Beach end of this week for my kid's (3 of 'em!) dance competition.

I'd like to try and 'accidentally' run across a c/o beach ... suggestions on my best bets?

Motorcity -- I hate to d isappoint you dude but there are NO nude beaches around you can just "happen across." There is a nude area in Ocean Isle Beach North Carolina which is about an hours drive north of us. In addition, there are two resorts close by (relatively speaking). Whispering Pines Resort and one other which has a new name since it was just sold. It is in Tabor City, NC. You can't even wear a thong on the beach here -- violation of city ordinances.... sorry dude -- but good luck at the dance comp!!

I was starting to get the impression that SC wasn't rife with nude opportunities

What about Ocean Isle Beach? I think that might be doable ...

Also want to inquire about nature preserve kind of areas. Most of kids would enjoy that too. Would be nice if the 2 (Ocean Isle) might work into a 1/2 day's outing ...

Thanks Jay - what's the scoop on this 'nude area' in Ocean Isle Beach? How would I find it?

I am a fellow Michigander who is from the Myrtle Beach area originally. Beach Bum was not exactly accurate.
Whispering Pines is not in Tabor City. It is near Shalotte. The Nirvana Sun Club is in Tabor City. Bird Island is the closest beach for nude activity. It is an unihabited island that is only reachable by boat or foot from Sunset Beach, NC. Sunset Beach is about 20 min north of the Little River, North Myrtle Beach area, and is the southern most barrier island in NC before you get to SC.

MC -- to be exactly accurate, Nirvana closed months ago and was bought out by another club -- I can't remember the name but it is in Tabor City, NC. Whispering Pines is in Ocean Isle, North Carolina and Byrd Island is south of Sunset Beach, NC. However, Byrd Island is no longer an island since the last hurricane washed up so much sand it bridged the gap between Sunset Beach and the island. And to be EXACTLY accurate, Byrd Island is in South Carolina but it can only be reached by going through North Carolina. Hence, the South Carolina police never go up there and the North Carolina police don't have any jurisdiction. Therefore, its a great place to go. There has been talk about the Federal Bureau of Land Management taking over the island or letting North Carolina annex it; however, with money the way it is in the government right now, thats likely not going to happen. Hope you had a good time while you were here.... I know there were a ton of dancers in town for that event. J

Is Bird Island getting much use by naturists? I was there last Sept. in the afternoon and nobody was nude. I'll be going back to Myrtle this Oct. on a golf trip and will have afternoons free. Would love to do some nude sunbathing.

Have you all had any problems driving on the beach to get to Byrd island/peninsula? Even when the tide comes in?

That would be really bad if you got your car stuck in wet sand with a rising tide!

Mel -- best I can see, there is some use. I've been several times and it was mostly used by men. I understand that there are several families who go to Bird Island but they go farther down the beach toward the tip.

As for driving-- forget it. Its about 1/2 mile walk from the closest parking area. I have seen a lot of folks riding beach bikes down there. There are no motor vehicles allowed on the beach

Sure wish I had fired up the laptop to get this information while I was there!!!

I ended up finding Whispering Pines on my own one afternoon - ran out of time to do more than find the front gate. I then took my wife up there when we had some small amount of free time. Understand my wife & I have shall we say 'divergent' views on nudity ... it was a good opportunity to open up some dialog even though I never got closer than the 17/904 intersection.

We did actually end up spending our last night in the area at Ocean Isle Beach at my wife's suggestion - I hoped this was a good indicator that we might stop by for a tour of the Whispering Pines, but alas it was not to be ....

Hopefully I can continue to pursue the dialog and arrange a visit to a place up here near Detroit, or a 'spontaeous' visit to her sister in northern New Jersey (& a side trip to Sandy Hook!!! )

I would have loved to been able to take her to a beach that would have been much more conducive and hopefully illustrating the virtues of nudity without the formality or awkwardness of a resort visit.

And due to our experience in the Myrtle Beach area, I don't expect we'll be back there 'right soon'. Sure wish the people in power would hire themselves a real *traffic engineer*!!! Talk about frustrating! but I digress

Thanks for the information about Byrd Island and I'll ask sooner next time ...

Btw, the kids had a wonderful time at the dance Nationals and overall we had a very nice vacation mixed in.

Does your wife have any interest in Native American culture - music, dance, crafts?

On August 9th & 10th the Leonard J. Pamp Memorial Pow Wow is being held at Turtle Lake Resort in Union City. It is held outside the gates of the resort, and is a totally non-nude event. But it is right there next to Turtle Lake. You could take the opportunity to take a tour of the resort with her just to see what it is all about (call the office to arrange it, they know about reluctant spouses and will have suggestions), perhaps take a swim break or rest on the beach awhile before returning to the Pow Wow. Turtle Lake doesn't require nudity except in the water, so she can be at ease and not feel pressured.

No interest in the arts, but Turtle Lake really isn't all that far...
