Here is a report from my trip last fall
As September 2002 approached and a trip to Florida, the stirring for a nude beach arose again knowing that I would be less than a one-hour drive from Canaveral National Seashore. Its probably more than 20 years that I have known about nudity practices on this beach since it is beside NASA and there has been a long history of nudity including the military and McArthur. I think that I first read about it in Lee Baxandall’s book that I purchased at local bookstore after reading a newspaper review of the Guide to Nude Beaches.
As I sat on the plane I sat with some anticipation. My business associates were around me and being a conservative lot they would not understand my desire to tan nude on a beach. As I was on the two hour flight I imagined driving in the car to the beach, reassuring myself that I had the map on how to get to Playalinda and that after reading NetNude, and checking with CFN on legal (or should I say tolerated) status that I would have wonderful day on the beach. All I needed was good weather and the forecast in the newspaper had been good. I just hoped that when I got to Orlando that the Florida sunshine would be out.
Yes – as we landed, the sky was clear and blue and sunny. The temperature was over 80 degrees and climbing – a perfect beach day. I proceeded to the rental car lot and picked up the car, asking for directions to Cape Canaveral to get me out of the airport. To my pleasure, there was a direct route highway that took me Titusville.
It took a little bit of driving to get on the road out to the Canaveral National Seashore as there are some one-way streets. Once on my way out, the road is real easy to follow – you go by the intercoastal waterway and there were many men and women fishing – some of them in speedos and thongs – a fine sight! Continuing on the road I went by the nature preserves and then made one mistake – by driving into the military establishment. Having made the U-turn, thinking the military guard must get a number of people who make the wrong turn, I continue on to the seashore park entrance. At the entrance, security was high due to September 11 and proximity to NASA and therefore all vehicles were subject to search. So what did the guard think about someone with a luggage bag in his trunk going to a nature preserve seashore. But then, he must get to know the nudists who frequent the beach and must have long ago stopped judging them.
Anyway, as indicated on directions, I continue along after the security point. The interesting part was the Boivard County warning that nudity and indecent exposure is prohibited. Several more of these signs were posted along the road – yet having been reassured by the President of CFN that nudism has been well tolerated during the past several years, I continued on to the parking lots.
Sheriffs were at parking lot 12, 3 of them. So were they preparing an invasion or what? So I decided to head over the boardwalk on to the beach to have a look. As I went over the boardwalk I came across a beach with very few people on it – at boardwalk 12 they all had swim suits on yet they were pretty skimpy thongs or speedos. One women looked as if she might be topless but I concluded I would not carry on up walking up the beach but decided to continue on to parking by boardwalk 13A as advised by CFN. I might add that it probably would take all of 5 minutes to walk from lot 12 to 13 – and that meant that I could see clusters of people and kites up the beach that I presumed was the nude area – maybe event the Central Florida Nudists table.
As I come back over the boardwalk over the dunes, a fellow with a skimpy neon green thong came walking down the road from the direction of the nude area of the beach. This encouraged me to keep going. He hopped into his BMW.z3 and went in the direction of lot 13, and I followed along in my rental car. At the parking lot, he met his lady – she was in a skimpy thong and had supplies that looked like they had been at the beach for a while that day.
I was fortunate to get a parking spot in lot 13. And as I got out of the car and got packed up to go to the beach, I noticed this fellow and his girlfriend parked next to me and he was buff naked, pulling on his cutoff jeans shorts. More good news and signs of having found the clothing optional beach.
Where I parked I was close to boardwalk 13, rather than 13A. So I thought that maybe I would take this earlier boardwalk and then proceed up to the nude area. Yet, to my surprise, as I arrived on the beach by boardwalk 13, there were four individuals sunning nude.
The part that I always debate about when arriving at a nude beach is when to shed clothes. Just off the boardwalk, I took off my shoes and tshirt but left on shorts. It seems to me that there are two types – those that doff their duds as quickly as they can and those like me that walk down the beach with some clothes on and then disrobe where they spend the day.
So I then walked through the beach area. Immediate observations included there being maybe 25 nudists clustered together – socializing and obviously came here knowing each other, a woman and her man at the water’s edge, couples - female/male, some male/male, and solo males.
After walking for five minutes, and certainly not being the last person on the beach, I placed my towel on the beach and slipped off my shorts and pulled out my magazine and book that I have brought along to read. I also pull out the sunscreen.
To my south there was one couple with some tan lines. To the north was a couple with all over tans. When I arrived I went and asked the couple to the north if one of them could help apply some sunscreen to my back and he indicated that his wife would help me, which she did. They were not very chatty and so I went back to reading.
I lay there on the beach for about an hour and then decided to go for a walk up the beach where the crowds thinned out further but there were others spread out along the beach.
Back to my towel and lay down again. I have a tendency to be a people watcher and whenever I'm at a nude beach my attention always seems to be grabbed by first-timers. It's often quite funny to see the 'pattern of response' that they go through. I digress for a moment to share a funny story.
I can recall a fellow who came down to the beach. It was clear it was his first time. It took him forever to get up the courage to bare all. First it was his T-shirt and then after a long nervous-looking sit on a log, he finally slipped the shorts off and settled in. Secretly I found myself betting on whether he'd chicken out or not and I give him a telepathic "THAT'S IT" when he finally got naked.
As I was looking around, I watched a couple arrive to the north. He had on swim board short style swimsuit and she had on a skimpy bikini. They were carrying chairs. I though it kind of funny that they went up the beach with the chairs and then she slipped off her top and they remained with bottoms on. Yet later on another walk, I saw that they had slipped them off. So I guess it just took them some time to get used to being nude on beach.
Couple 2 also arrived, he had on standard blue sports short swimsuit and she had a nice thong and bikini top. They arrived and claimed their spot on the beach, just to the north of the couple north to me. She never really sat down but after putting down towel and stuff, she pulled off her top and then proceeded down to the water skipping through the waves with her tanned **** jiggling and her nice tanned *** cheeks framed by her thong. He seemed to hesitate up by the beach towels and I had wondered if he was thinking of swimming nude since he spent some time adjusting the waistband on the swimsuit. I sat there wondering as he played with his waist band and then watched him walk down into the water with his swimsuit on. She was not having any of it, because he all of a sudden he came out of the water after she had pulled off his swimsuit and he left it by their beach towel. After jumping in the waves, they both came up on to the beach and lay down, with her slipping off her thong and sunning nude. After awhile, she decided to go for a swim and went to the surf again totally nude. He sat watching her. Later in the day I was out in the waves enjoying the water at the same time as he was out there and I commented to him how great it was that day – sunshine and water, etc. I asked him if this was his first time they had been to Playalinda and he responded yes but indicated they had been to Haulover before. He said he would be back to Playalinda for sure.
Later in the day they wanted to get out of the sun so moved up to be between the couple that helped me with sunscreen and me where there was a bit of shade from the trees at the back of the beach by the dunes and flat marsh. We chatted for awhile. They were down in Florida on a holiday for several days, had heard of Playalinda and thought they would try it out. I also got chatting to the original couple that helped me with sunscreen. It seems that all four of them were on vacation – the original two belong to a nudist resort and the second couple were naturists like me that just liked to get away to the naturist beach when they could.
What I find interesting about being at a place like Playalinda is the open, free and uncrowded atmosphere…miles of beach and lots of room to spread out. Those that want to socialize with others can and those that want some privacy, further away from the crowd can also do so.
The other part is that there did not really seem to be any gawkers. While there were some folks that were not naked, they did seem curious. For example, there were six fellows that look to be college aged that came down the beach later in the day. As they walked by those of us nude, they did not point or make fun of us but simply seemed to be out for a walk. They were wearing board short type swimsuits and most of them had peeled off their t-shirts – something that I must say is not the norm from what I have seen of American youth these days and not sure why men being topfree is an issue. As they went a little further down the beach, they decided to go in for a swim. Those that did not yet have their shirts off took them off. What was interesting is that 2 of them also took off their board shirts, and no, they did not skinny dip, but the 2 of them were wearing speedos. Again, this does not fit with the image of American males today. When the lads had finished swimming, they came up the beach and the two in speedos came up the beach still in their speedos carrying their board shorts. My only thought was that when I was their age, I for sure would have peeled the speedo and skinny dipped (since I had done this in my youth) if I was out on a beach like Playalinda – like who cares on a nude beach if some late teens skinny dip? My only thought was that maybe some day soon, one of them would try to skinny dip – having got to the point of comfort on a beach in a speedo, hanging on the beach is but a small next step.
No signs of problems with the law. No hassles from the crew that clears the beach of debris.
A great day - try it out some time.
