  • 'Perving' or 'Appreciation' - what's the difference?

I read a post by Green Sunshine recently warning new naturist Sassy against 'pervs' at C/O beaches and the like.

Good advice but my question is simply - what is the difference between 'perving' and 'appreciating the nude bodies around you' or just 'watching the world go by'??

I suspect responses will be of the 'it depends on his/her behaviour' variety (and I say he/SHE on purpose - is 'perving', whatever that might be defined as, restricted to men only)??

Since there is no such word in the English language as "perving" we can not go to the dictionery to find out the difference between that and "appreciating". Some persons may mean "lusting" when they say "perving".

"Lusting", in my opinion, is simply feeling a sexual response inside one's self to what one is seeing and appreciating. My understanding of the the true definition of lust does not imply rape, adultry, harassment or ill-intent. No court in the USA would convict a person for "lusting".

An ancient writer, as recorded in religious literature, states that lusting is sinful, as it is committing adultry in one's heart. This misleading statement of asceticism, stoicism, - stern, austere, hermit-like, monk-like, causes a lot of internal conflict and guilt in some very fine people.

In my opinion, simple lusting is not sinful nor is it equal to committing adultry. So relax and enjoy the beach scenery. You are blessedly human when you enjoy/appreciate what you see.

i think it would be the different between looking or staring....
and i think this is why a lot of women will not get into nudism the preseved or real idea that some perv will be starring at her( unfortunately its not untrue at some places)
        just my 2 cents

Steve hit it on the head. It's the difference between looking and staring, for which we had a discussion a while back. If you are just looking at someone or a group of people, they generally will have no problem with it.

Staring implies longer looks at your subject and more intense concentration. Staring is not necessarily bad like if someone had a tattoo and you were trying to decipher what it was from 10 meters away. But if you are staring at their body, specifically the areas usually hidden from society because of the laws, that is rude and could be defined as perving.

Perving: staring, ogling, leering, looking fixedly for an unusual length of time at someone else for reasons of sexual admiration. If someone has to say to you, "Take a picture, it'll last longer!" then you have been perving.

I don't know about 'Perving' but I suspect it is more or less that same as 'Gawking'. It's impossible to precisely nail down a definition since it is so subjective, but here is how we put it in our 'newbie' letter at Toledo TanClub :

It is OK to look at people, but don't gawk. Gawking is roughly defined as a prolonged gaze which produces discomfort. Look people in the eye when you meet them. Soon enough their nudity will be unremarkable to you.

I'm surprised that, with all the speculations about the meaning of "perving," no one has mentioned the most likely: slang for "being perverted."

Now, I have not yet had the privilege of sampling social nudity, but as for the difference between perverted and natural appreciation, I'm sure it's the same while naked as in the textile world. Appreciation involves the whole person, while perversion focuses on body parts. Lust says, "I'd do sex with her/him if I could." Appreciation says, "What a beautiful person you are!"

Oh, and if you're appreciating, tell her! Or him! It almost never hurts, and it may lead to a lasting friendship.
