I've always thought it would make an interesting cartoon to have Michaelangelo's "David" viewed by two Orthodox Jews and the caption read "That's funny; he doesn't look Jewish."

Why does the statue of Michelangelo's David cause such fear in Americans? I have heard of SEVERAL cases where people with replicas of the statue being ORDERED to cover it up, or having complaints filed by neighbors. In one story, one man who complained said, :I didn't even know it was art!" HELLO! Even before I became a nudist, I knew David was art! What a weird world we live in.

Good question, TXK NUDE! Unfortunately what we're seeing is that, with the proliferation of mass media, artistic depictions of nudity are getting disseminated to people who really, really, really don't like them. Probably in the past there was as much dislike of nudity, but now it seems that if someone objects to David, or Eve, or Venus, the whole world hears about it.
(Someone else brought out that point recently, so I can't claim that observation as original.)
One would hope that the voices of reason and tolerance would be heard as much as those of prejudice and hatred, but now, as always, mob psychology is more exciting than logic. And hate crimes make news, while random acts of kindness usually don't.
I would ask those who object to David: "Is it sex? Is David playing with himself? Or is it just the kind of thing you can see in any men's locker room?"

I wouldn't mind and have tried to look for a statue of David for years but all the ones I've run into are these CHEAP immitations and not the well defined work of art that is represented in Italy. Now that I'm a centuries old official nudist, I would mind having a few nude pieces around the place. If only these dealers/sellers would stop trying to pass off these cheap blobs of cement as art.

Yes stevedaoust...Much of the beauty of David and the quality copies is in the fact that they are carved of marble...The unique ability to give stone a living quality...also in this case size does matter..The original and life size copies only ..can capture the exquisite details...Outdoorbare

First thing I do when I turn on my compy is go to Google and check the news then do a search for "nude". 'Tis scarey. Most of the coverage has to do with nude dancing parlors, nude dead bodies, celebreties who were photographed nude when unknowns, negative stories about those crazy nudists and stories about Middle America having fits over nude art in public...? No wonder Europeans think we're nuts. Hmmm? Isn't that a hint of breast under the Statue of Liverty's gown?

Have you ever seen the original Michelangelo's David? I have, and it's HUGE! No picture, no copy, can really do that one justice.

On the other hand, I think the Venus de Milo is only life size or a little larger. (The only time I've been in Paris was a Tuesday, and the Louvre was closed, along with all the other major tourist attractions. Sacre bleu! I could have spent days in there!)

I remember hearing a story bout the owners of A cirus building a house in Sarasota, Florida & having their nude reliefs being done as part of the efront fiasco. When it was finished, they were so embarassed that they had parts of it plastered over. It may have been the Norths, but it just goes to show how even people in show business have been ultra conservative for decades in the U.S..
Also, now tha Hilary Clinton is campaigning in New York where topless women are legle, I wonder if she'l Give a speach, topless, persuing the women's votes. In an electrion, every vote counts !

Now that I'd like to see! Not to be prurient, but just for the shock value! And would the TV news show her only from the shoulders up?

The guy who does the catrtoons on the main page, Ron Coleman, takes suggestions. You can go to http://www.coleman-cartoons.com to see more of his work and maybe even email him. Also, http://www.netnude.com/main/cartoon.html gives some more info about him as well as a way to email him.

David was intended to be placed on top of a cathedral, so it would be viewed at a distance, and looking up at that. This is the reason for the monumental size and the overlarge hand and foot?the perspective would have been right with the statue in its intended location.
However, someone in authority?I've forgotten who it was?decreed that the statue was such a magnificent work of art that it had to be placed where people could see it better.
Good copies are available, but they come at a high price, and I've never seen a copy that has the impact that the original has. If you stand still and stare at the original from nearby, you'll swear you saw it move. None of the copies I've seen have that effect.
And as for the fellow who couldn't tell it was art, that says a lot about him and nothing at all about the statue.
