  • Fired for surfing this site on the job

I just got unpleasant news today. I was fired for surfing this very site at work.

My ex-company said this site was inappropriate to be logged onto thru it's computers.

They had no argument using their computers to look at other sites but anything of a sexual/nudity related is simply forbidden.

I just wanted to share this so no one else goes through what I've learned the hard way.

I do not want to insult you, but it looks like your boss was just waiting for the right occasion to fire you.

What kind of job did you have? Did you work there for a long time? Your work was appreciated?

How long did you surf this site at your job?

For me, it is hard to belive that a boss fire an employee for that. At least, you do not fire a good worker.

I very curious to know more about that.

Did you know about the "rules"?

I was an account executive with a major food company.

Yes, I've been fired for surfing this site. Absolutely nothing more. My work was appreciated and more performance reviews were always more than satisfactory.

It happened today. I came in and my Manager wished to talk to me. He took me into his office and HIS manager was there as well. They explained to me they had discovered that I had used company computers to read this site. I admitted I had and with that was informed that looking at this type of material was contrary to the company conduct and morals and I would no longer be representing them in business. I was then given an envelope which contained a letter advising me of this fact and a seperation check.

I work at a school and use the school computers for work purposes, this inclues email and internet. I go into "work place" mode when ever I use THEIR computer. As most work settings email and the use of computers belongs to the company and you need to go their rules- on questions asked. We have filters that may back this site- I won't want to be the one to "test" their policy for computer use.

Most networks use a proxy server to allow users access to the web. Every URL requested is logged in these systems which is probably how your usage was detected. Where I work, an individual was fired for much the same reason.

Sorry to hear that and this is the reason I am only on this site at home.
I hope you find another good job soon and that your ex-employer doesn't blackball you with other companies!

Personally I would have just given you a warning: Don't use company computers for anything except work related surfing. If that warning wasn't heeded, THEN I would fire you. Of course, if there was something to that effect in writing and you aware of it, you wouldn't get the warning. My belief is that company computers should be used ONLY for company work. We had two people fired AND arrested where I worked for surfing porn sites of underage teens.

                  They can do that.

If they tolerated anything of a sexual or even nude-related access (and I don't mean stumbling into something) it could come back to haunt them on a sexual harrassment case.

I can surf the net all day at work - but I stay away from nudist sites. No problems with finding out the hockey scores, or news of the day, or the weather.

I also don't know who's going to be walking into my office next .... so if I'm listening to the BBC online, that's OK. But I sure wouldn't browse this site.

I agree with Jon-Marc, a warning would have been more appropriate.
Me thinks there is more to the story.

If they said they fired you because they think naturism is immoral you should look into suing them. If the reason was you spent too much time surfing and not working then they probably have a point. I think my mom ran that risk when she got into a solitaire craze.

Some places have what they call "zero tolerance" for certain things. I worked for the government, and one thing they had zero tolerance for was anything that could be considered sexual harrassment. They didn't give second chances with some things.

Was that the wording? "Sexuality/Nudity"? Cause I guess, even though this site is not sexual....it does contain nudity. I would not surf this website on my school's server for that reason.....cause they specify "sexuality and/or nudity".

                          Really sucks....sorry for your misfortune.

BUT....you are officially fired. SO, why don't you name the major food company you worked for so that we can all boycot

It's ok to name names, right? What are they gonna do?

Re: sentence # 1 - seems to me this would take a lot of aggravation and money -- and maybe our friend here doesn't have a lot of both.

Re: sentence # 2 - that could certainly be valid, no matter what the content of the site is.

Sorry, Fired Nudist, for this to have happened to you. Best of luck in finding a replacement position soon.

                              I totally agree with Jon-Marc.

An employee is hired and paid on an hourly basis to WORK for the employer and any time in office hours "surfing the net" , sending private eMails, making private telephone calls is tha same as stealing stationery from the office stationery cupboard. The employee is stealing time instead of goods.

It doesn't matter whether the "surfing" is on Clothesfree sites or whatever the boss still has a right to expect the employee to be doing office/business work when being paid for work.
