  • Can you consider yourself a nudist/naturist and still enjoy porn occasionally??

This questions comes out of a conversation I had this evening with a few mates down the pub. The question proposed was:

'Can you still be a good father if you enjoy the occasional foray into some form of 'normal' porn' (by 'normal' I apply entirely my own criteria and absolutely do not include kids, animals, pain, submission etc. - you know what I mean)

So - taking it over to being clothes free at times but also viewing the occasional titillating mag/DVD etc. - are the two mutually incompatible????

Part of the point of "naturist family values" is that nudity and porn have nothing to do with one another. The fact that porn often makes use of nudity is no more relevant than that porn scenes are often shot in bed. Can a person who sleeps in a bed also make use of porn which takes place in a bed?

    The question is a non-sequitur.

Here we go again relating being nude, a naturist, or nudist, to: depiction of erotic behavior (as in pictures, video, or writing) intended to cause sexual excitement.

Considering yourself a nudist/naturist, & enjoying pornography = two separate subjects non related.

That's almost like saying "Can you consider yourself a normal person and still enjoy driving a automobile occasionally"

The seperate answer to both is "Yes"

Naturism and porn are not related, at all. Yes you can be a naturist and enjoy porn, you can also be a naturist and think porn is discusting.

An enduring myth is that somehow, one cannot be a nudist and view the nude body in an erotic or even pornographic manner. I think it comes from the "nudism is not about sex", or "nude not lewd" proclamations that nudism has made over the years. Don't get me wrong, the proclamations are correct. But they are often interpreted to mean that the nudist completely "desexualizes" or "asexualizes" the nude body. When in fact it contextualizes it. Hard to explain, but I have a different "eye" when I see a nude person at a beach, as opposed to some erotic photo set I may come across. The message that my eyes send my brain may be the same, but the way my brain interprets it is different.
So yes, it is possible to be a nudist and still get a thrill from internet erotica/porn.

Here's a question for everyone here who thinks porn is ok. Would you allow other people to watch you and your partner have sex either? Because this is what porn is; watching other people having sex.

Douglas, you are correct that watching porn is about watching others have sex, and that is similar to allowing others to watch you have sex. The question posed here is more about how watching porn relates to nudism. And I agree that the two terms have nothing in common.
i think that nudism offers a healthier balance of sexual and non-sexual perceptions that would lead to less sex obsession, but that might not have anything to do with anyone's interest in viewing others having sex.
Porn certainly has contributed to many ills upon our culture, but it is not the source of the illness, only a symptom, like any other addiction/obsession. The illness is individual.

You're right there Safebare. Porn is not the source, it is a symptom of a lax culture that among other things, says elicit sex is ok -funny how we still call it elicit- as long as we use protection, and porn doesn't give one STDs.
Naturism certainly does help to provide a healthier balance of sexual perception. It has certainly helped me to see the naked human body as just that, a human body and not a sexual thing to be avoided. I am one of those rare people who was still a virgin when I met the woman I married (I was thirtytwo when we met) because for me sex is personal experience between two committed people, not a game to be played with just anyone.

This is a topic I see recur. As you say, nudism is not about sex, and nudity isn't lewd, but people take it to extremes. The problem with most textiles is that they ALWAYS see nudity as sexual. In any context. Sex is always on the mind. It's a Pavlovian association, where they are incapable of seeing the human body in its natural state without thinking about sex, and are thus incapable of understanding how it could be possible for people not to (you'd have to be "gay," because any "red-blooded," "NORMAL," etc., etc., we've all heard it). Yet some nudists take the OTHER extreme and say that there is NEVER any instance in which to see the body in a sexual manner. They're two dichotomous poles, with seemingly no middle ground. This is something I've seen nudists protest against over the years since I've been a nudist. As you said, context is key. Nudists do not always think of sex, in any instance in which they see the nude human body, as textiles do. However, the other extreme is just as fallacious. It's like what Aristotle talked about, to aim at the golden mean between the extremes of excess (nudity is always sexual) and deficiency (there is never a time to view the nude body in a sexual manner).

I find it interesting when textiles claim that nudity=sex yet forget that people can (and do) have sex dressed all the time. So not only is being nude sexual but so is being dressed???? Then they forget all the times that they are naked/expose their genitals and it is not sexual....like at the doctors office, bathrooms, taking a bath/shower, and changing clothes. So they are exposed several times a day when it is not sexual but filter it out. I think that this mindset is largely societal and if something is sexual or not is in the mind of the viewer.

When I am in the nudist mindset a naked body is no more sexual than any naked animal. On the other hand When I am in the mood to view porn it is my mind that puts a sexual twist to an image. Since becoming involved with social nudity though I have found that not only do I not automatically think sex when seeing nudity but I also have seen what REAL people look like. Where porn had previously helped to ruin my perception of the human body, social nudity has shown me how beautiful people really are. While I still enjoy porn I do not watch it nearly as much as I used to.

And let's not forget fetishes in which people are SPECIFICALLY aroused sexually by articles of clothing.

Exactly. The biggest sexual organ is the mind. Nudists are liberated in that they can CHOOSE when to see the body as sexual in the appropriate time and place. Because the human body in and of itself is a neutral stimulus. It's the thoughts a person imparts on it that makes it what it is to that person. Unfortunately, most people are socialized to have a one-track mind.

Well, if you CHOOSE to let other people watch you - and it is your choice to let them, and their choice to watch - what difference does it make?

I'm not sure anything can be gained by being judgmental on the existence of porn, as long as it is not illegal. Remember, people are judging us for wanting to be naked all the time; if we don't want them to judge and want them to live and let live, we kinda have to do the same thing.
