  • Nudist colony in Spain

I think I read somewhere here that there is a nudist colony in Spain that ia an inclusive neighborhood with shopping, apartments, etc. Does anyone have any information?

You may be thinking about Vera Playa which has several naturist urbanisations, a camp site, a bar, and a hotel. You can walk through the streets and go shopping as nature intended, in fact you could spend your entire vacation naked.

I enjoyed being able to get up in the morning, walk to the pool for a swim, have breakfast, walk through the streets to the beach, go for a beer, eat lunch at the restaurant, go shopping, walk to the mail box, and all without a stitch of clothing.

On my trip back from the mail box I didn't even wear shoes, the only thing I had was the key to my apartment.

The best part of all is that you are not fenced in, the streets are acceable to anyone that wishes to drive down them, and it is possible to see into the urbanisation from the highway, but no one cares!!

        What's a "nudist colony"?

I don't know why everyone is so adverse to the word colony. One of the dictionary definitions is given as "any group of individuals having similar interests, occupations, etc., usually living in a particular locality; community" which would perfectly define many clothing optional resorts, or am I wrong?

You can't be wrong if you're quoting from a dictionary.

In my opinion, the descriptive "colony' hasn't been used since the 1960s to describe nudist/naturist places. "Colony" still connotates lepers and ants, which is probably one reason why people rarely use the word: it's negative!

I don't see the word colony as negative, if you do that's your problem. When many people hear the word nudist they also associate the word colony, but I doubt many people think of that in a bad way. They don't imagine people locked up somewhere because they're naked, but somewhere people can go if they wish to be naked, possibly they might think of it in a funny way but not bad.

And there is a reason we have dictionaries; to define the words of our languages. Yes sometimes they may become out-dated, but ultimately that is still the purpose of a dictionary, and they can be and are updated over time.

Dictionaries are only good for looking up specific meanings. Connotative meanings are usually not in there. They also usually do not specify a term that the word is not used in.

Yes other Bob, you are correct that a colony can describe a community of nudists, but it is no longer done. The dictionary definition no longer fits the nudist businesses of today.

IMHO, colony does not define resort, perfectly or otherwise.

A resort is where people go to visit; a colony is where people go to live. Further, the word colony connotes a community where the residents have little prospect of leaving voluntarily, such as a "penal" colony. Colony means the resident is there by the direction of some other authority, not by the choice of the "colonist." Everything about nudism is by personal choice, not by outside authority, thus the terms nudist and colony are anathema to each other.

Well, I said it was opinion!

The logical place for this question would be in the "International Locations" forum. In there, I found this from 2005...

Vera Playa is also very interesting. Like Cap d'Agde in France, it is more like a small city than a resort. There are no fences or other barriers around its perimeter. It basically functions as a small town that is naturist:

I thought someone else would have mentioned it by now.
