• Depressed nudist

When I get depressed, I get the urge to go be nude somewhere. I've had a few times where I felt like tearing off my clothes and running into the streets. (I was able to keep my clothes on, thankfully).

    Has anybody else experienced this?

Guess what!? I just took a quick nude shower in the rain! It felt kind of nice, but with all the light from street light and reflected light from the cloud cover, I kept it short--there's no telling who might see you and what might come of it.

I feel tempted to do it again.

If this only happens when you're depressed, get help for the depression. I'm chronically depressed for at least 12 years now. I used to have the uncontrollable desire to get laid, when I got depressed. It is an urge to feel that someone loves me, and accepts me enough to have sex with me. You are probably needing the reaction as much as the nudity, it sounds like you want people to pay attention to you (running nude through the streets will get a obvious response) and this is probably not the best way to get attention. I am not a doctor, but I think it might help you to talk to one.

Well ccs, if this happens mainly in the wintertime, it could be SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which is caused by exposure to less sunlight. I guess stripping off the clothes in the daytime would cause you to get more of the sun's rays, thus reducing the depression.

Also, have you ever been to a nude venue or have you been contained to home nudism? If you are stuck at home, that could explain why you are busting at the seams to get outside and naked. Try to find a nude beach ot park.

          NotBob13,

First, are you or are you not Bob? And have there been 12 others who have claimed to be Not Bob? Second, where is your signature quote from?

I've suffered from depression for over twelve years now. Until I received the proper medication, my favorite method of relief was shedding my troubles with my clothes. Fortunately, I was able to control myself and keep my nudity at home.

My urge to be nude is directly related to how warm and sunny it is. As the weather becomes warmer and sunnier, I get a greater and greater urge to be nude, to the point where I have to hold myself back if I am in a textile environment.

I believe that most nudists benefit from the release of endorphins and/or serotonin in the brain when they are nude. These chemicals are associated with stress reduction and feelings of well being. I describe it as "nudist's high, and compare it to "runner's high". In my view, that's the number 1 (subconscious) reason for wanting to be nude.

In your case, you urge to be nude may be a desire to cause the production of these chemicals to increase, so that you will feel better as a result.

There is a class of anti-depession medications that are sertonin uptake inhibitors (essentially meaning that they keep the serotonin produced in the brain available to do its good work). I think that Zoloft and Wellbutrin are both in this class.

As an aside, Zyban has the same chemical composition as Wellbutrin. So, a medication that works for depression (Wellbutrin) is also used (Zyban) to help people stop smoking.

As someone else suggested, if you have regular bouts of depression, you should consider talking to your family doctor about it. For many people, taking anti-depressives like Zoloft alleviate depression very well.

Some people are on anti-depressives permanently. One well-known name is Dan Rather, anchor of the CBS Evening News. Some time ago, he revealed that he had had depression for many years, but was able to force himself to do his job well. Now diagnosed and on an anti-depressive, he says that this is the best thing that he has ever done, and intends to stay on this medication for the rest of his life.

Disclaimer: I have no medical training at all, so accept these views or not, as you see fit.

Funny...but when I am NOT nude I get depressed. What came first, the depression or the lack of nudity?

I certainly have experienced that. In fact, I'm glad to know I'm not alone with it - thanks! I've noticed out (nude) hiking that the 'lower' my mood, the more likely I am to be a bit more 'daring' (although, for clarity, I'm never especially daring, I don't need legal issues).

I also find that just being nude ALWAYS improves my mood dramatically, whether I felt depressed to begin with or not. I'm nude right now, it feels GREAT

So, I guess the message is get naked everybody! I wonder if there are enough of us to just say the word "o.k., everybody naked NOW!" if we could overwhelm the police force? Hmmmm - best not try it I guess.....

ccs, how severe is your depression? At the clinical level, with thoughts of suicide and all that? Or is it just a few moments or days of sadness? If it's moderate, I would urge you to do as I did, and get counseling. (It's not quite that simple. My marriage was falling apart and my stepson was talking about suicide; for a time we got counseling as a family, but I was the only one who stuck with it through the breakup and divorce.)

Drugs are sometimes necessary, but I would caution all who use anti-depressants also to get counseling from a psychologist if possible; I found that by exploring the relational and emotional factors of my depression, I have been able to control it. Tea and coffee also help, but it's good to set limits; otherwise you will be drinking more for less benefit. And of course, I too throw off a lot of depression with my clothes. Gee, do you think we could claim the right to go nude under the Americans with Disabilities Act? After all, if wearing clothes causes depression, wouldn't a "reasonable accommodation" be to let us go to work nude? Sounds good to me!
