Traveller is correct; Eden Bay Resort is the only naturist resort in the DR with its own (small) beach and three pools. You'd fly into Puero Plata and the drive to Eden Bay (by one of their staff) is about 90 minutes. Go to http://www.edenbay.com

Hello. This won't help you much, but there is Catalina Island, south of La Romana. I don't know whether nudity normally happens there, but the Bare Necessities nude cruise is stopping there from 8am to 5pm on 3/2/06, and I understand we're to have the island to ourselves all day and may go nude at will all that day.

          Cheers!

Yes, I think you can. Check the website - perhaps it mentions day trippers. But visiting for the day only makes sense if you are staying at another resort on the north coast near or in Puerto Plata. Otherwise, you may have a very looooonnnnggg drive ahead of you.

The previous postings are all correct about Eden Bay. The site does mention prices for day visitors. I visited the resort during the fall and found it exactly as described on their website. My driver told me the distance from Puerto Plata is about 65 km, a little over 30 miles. It is, however, a bad road and your average speed will be less than 30 mph. From the airport it is 90 minutes to the resort.

Understand that the north coast is made up of cliffs and is on the Atlantic. The beach is I suspect man-made as there is a cut through the reef and the water can be more active than in the Caribbean. That said, it is an excellent resort with a very friendly staff. Unlike Hedo II in Jamaica, Eden Bay is a more "no nonsense" resort. Check their policy on their site.

To paraphrase Ebert, I give Eden Bay "two thumbs up."

What do you mean by "no nonsense"? You mean strict?

Hedo II has a reputation of being "sexually charged". While many sites say the stories are exaggerated, I do know that even 20+ years ago it was known as a wild and crazy place (I was there). Eden Bay has a published policy that defines acceptable behavior. Simply put, only normal displays of affection and no "provacative sexual conduct". In short, don't expect any of the escapades Hedo is rumored to have in the hot tubs at Eden Bay. I don't think it's strict, just good manners and behavior.

Remember too that Eden Bay is a nudist resort, not clothes-optional. What I saw was many of the women wore pareos to meals as opposed to the towels absolutely required if you're nude. The men, on the other hand, were typically nude 24/7. Places like Hedo just have clothes-optional beaches.

Study the web site (http://www.edenbay.com). Even though my experience with Hedo is now dated, I would not consider returning after finding Eden Bay.

when I went there in January of this year with my wife I found that everyone was nude all day except at the evening meal where they had started theme night where was one to dress as a pirate, gypsy etc. There were only a few of us males who dined naked each night and very few women were nude. Somehow I think this is spoiling a great resort.

Also it means if you are so inclined to theme nights that you have to have more than carry-on luggage

Based on the report by hairyballs I contacted Eden Bay and was told that theme nights are very dependent on the crowd. Some weeks they are well observed while other times the majority of the visitors are nude. I would imagine the time of year might have an effect as summer nights will definitely be hotter than winter evenings. In my case last October, most of the men were nude but the women did cover somewhat. This was pre-theme nights. Let's face it - a pareo may be less of a hassle than a towel.

I'm going to be there in mid-October, just after the owners banquet. I'll report back on what I see. Just out of curiosity, how many were there in when you were there? Last year in October there were about 40 total.
