  • ok, so here's a question...

Nudists and naturists. The two terms are often interchanged without any thought to the actual definition of either.

So my question is, what is the difference? Is ther any at all? I for one call myself a nudist (not naturist) because i like being nude and i don't link any kind of "getting back to nature" philosophy to it (although, yes it is more natural). I just enjoy the feeling of it; every single nerve out there and really feeling the wind, rain, sun, whatever. Maybe that makes me a bit of a sensualist as well... anyway...

So yeah what's really the difference between nudism and naturism? I'd like to know, as if i'm going to be classified i'd like for people to do it correctly...

      Definitions of Nudism and Naturism:

Nudism: An effort to live more honestly with oneself and others by living as much as possible without clothing.

Naturism: An effort to live more harmoniously with nature by living as much as possible without clothing.

I liked the definitions- may I interchange harmoniously with 'humourously' occasionally, when I'm feeling a bit down?
        cheers

Ok then, since i don't really see it as "being honest" nor do i go nude for health reasons, as per the dictionary.com definition, what does that make me and people like me, who just go nude because we enjoy being nude?

Youre probably just a Nudist if there isnt any connection with nature and being outdoors or any strong desire to be outdoors as part of your wanting to be nude.

I'd agree with that. But also, i do like to be outdoors when i'm nude. It's not any stronger of a desire than being indoors though. I just like to be nude wherever, indoors or outdoors.

Like i said, it's about how it feels to me. I enjoy the feel of water all over me when i'm swimming, the way grass feels between my toes when i walk, the way the air feels on my skin, the way the sun warms me, the way the fabric of my couch feels when i watch tv, the feel of my bedsheets when i lay down to sleep, the feel of my rug under my bare feet... it really doesn't matter whether i'm indoors or out.

So then... "just a nudist." Is that any better or worse than being a naturist? Does my lack of a real "philosophy" toward my nudity put me any lower than anyone else? I hope not...

Tiger, I would say that your reactions to stimuli from being nude makes you just as much a naturist as it does a nudist. I believe each definition has a place at thr table, and all are equal who practice spending time without clothing...

I would say it's a matter of what one prefers to be called. I prefer to be called a nudist. Textiles and even some nudists/naturists confuse naturist with naturalist. If I tell people I'm a nudist, they don't confuse that with any other word--even if they don't truly know what a nudist is.

I enjoy being nude--anywhere, any time, indoors or out, alone or with other people.

To me, a nudist is a person who prefers to live their life without clothing. Doing things around the house, socializing with others at resorts, or at home without any clothing. A naturist, on the other hand, is a person who likes the outdoor adventure without any clothing. They perform outside activities i.e., hiking, swimming, volleyball, boating, etc. Not to state that a nudist would not like to do the activities part, but they are much more comfortable socializing rather than a function that is full of activities.

                    Just my opinion.

I agree with Jon-Marc. You are what you say you are. The terms are virtually interchangeable despite the definitions.

That is how I use them. I am a nudist when I feel like using the term nudist and a naturist when I feel like using that term.
